I absolutely love howl's moving castle and Princess Mononoke is my favorite Miyazaki film, but this looks so terrible, even the english version with some of my favorite actors dubbing looks awful. Not only does ponyo creep me out but I want to punch her in the face lol to close her gaping mouth. I don't understand, Mononoke and Howl were such works of art (and I usually hate japanese art) but this looks so remedial compared to them? What gives?

PERSON#3: From Mononoke on, Miyazaki used a mix of traditional and digital animation, since he wanted a crisp, more "elegant" look. Ponyo, however, does not contain any CGI whatsoever, since for one, Miyazaki felt that hand-drawn images are still at the core of animation for him, and two, Ponyo has a large childhood-based theme. Its purpose is to exude a more childish, albeit a bit more crude, feel. (The main characters are five, after all.)
PERSON#1: True, but I still find the characters to come off as rather hideous caricatures of actual people, with contrived movement and mannerisms. I much prefer the beautiful, and mature films like Mononoke.
PERSON#4: that's why this is a movie aimed mostly for kids, you don't see many 5-8 year-old kids watching mononoke, do you? it'd be awful if they did.
PERSON#1: yeah I realize that but why do we have to make it so stupid and simple? I saw Mononoke when I was 8 and I loved it. Aren't we then encouraging people to grow up unsophisticated and stupid? I think children would enjoy more complex themes and interesting characters, I certainly did.
PERSON#4: then Disney wouldn't be as successful and Finding Nemo, UP, BOLT or any movie wouldn't have been the hits they were. Just and example. Not everyone can be like you when you were 8. I know when I was 8 my mother wouldn't let me watch Saint Seiya, and even tho it bothered me back then, I completely see her reasons now. Children are not about complicated, they're about cheerful and enjoyable things, at least... most of them are.
PERSON#1: Children's entertainment doesn't have to be complicated, it just shouldn't be so contrived and in their face. So many kids are rude, stupid, and cannot be calm or well behaved because films like these perpetuate youth as a time to be loud, self absorbed and above all obnoxious. Why lower the bar for children? Certainly there is much to gain in a complex and beautiful story for an 8 year old. I'm certainly glad I didn't sit around watching movies like this, reading has helped me a lot more.
PERSON#4: OMG dude, just let it go. Hundreds of people enjoyed and will enjoy this movie. i did, and I'm almost 22 years old. I honestly don't want to see myself enjoying only complicated and elaborated movies. If you didn't like it, or anything, that's fine, but don't say they shouldn't do things like these 'cuz it's lowering the bar for children... seriously, don't even make go there.
PERSON#5: Of course I don't dispute that Mononoke is a wonderful creation, with an underlying plethora of socially relevant themes and messages. That fact can be appreciated by anyone of any age. But this simpler style actually works for Ponyo.
Speaking of childhood theme-oriented movies, though, I think Tonari no Totoro surpasses Ponyo by far.
PERSON#1: I loved that movie but only because of the creatures. They seemed gentle, skittish, kind characters, but the humans came off as loud, rude, (especially the little girl) and simply obnoxious. I hated how large and grotesque her mouth was and the way she chased the poor totoros (are they all called totoro?) around rather then attempting to not scare the shit out of them. Maybe I'm just wierd, I dunno
PERSON#5: Well, Totoro wouldn't be Totoro without the creatures. (I think only the large one is named Totoro.) The little girl was a tad obnoxious, but most girls her age are. I thought the way he portrayed human relationships in that movie was pretty touching--particularly between the older and younger sister. (The younger one being a complete brat whom I would have smacked if she were my sister.)
