Title: expanding
Post by: rtil on February 27, 2009 05:55 AM
the past few days i've added a couple new features to the site that are the foundations for something i've wanted to do with this site that will make it much more functional and hopefully more useful for people. i've always wanted to have a site where you're logged in no matter where you go and there's something for everyone. recently i've added three new things: recent posts and members currently in the chat are viewable on the front page (http://www.thebackalleys.com), and the public uploader (http://www.thebackalleys.com/ok/public) now has a tag system and is much easier to browse through.

the tag system is currently useless to everyone except for myself, but soon i am going to add a function to be able to search files by their names, tags, and even your IP to see what you've uploaded in the past. and the information on the front page of the site is just a step in making the rest of the site feel like it's connected and not just a million seperate parts.

but while there are things that i would want to add to the site, i have no idea whether people would use them or not. i also don't want to make the mistake of bloating the site and making it a mess. and that's where you come in. what would you guys like to see different on thebackalleys? i'm open for any serious suggestions. adding, removing, changing features, whatever. let's hear it. and if you're not a member and would like to voice your opinion, sign up (http://www.thebackalleys.com/forum/index.php?act=Reg&CODE=00) and let's hear it.

++

however - as far as major features go - i won't be able to start adding them until i graduate in may. i can do little things, as i try to take 1 day off of working on the cartoon every week to "relax", that's usually when i'm coding on the site. but i always have stuff sitting around that i don't plan to do until later simply because of time restraints, i'm sure you all know what that is like.

I'd really love something like that drawing wall on facebook but that could be done by simply getting one of these oekaki boards that the rwd has.

other than that..! let me sleep a night over it and I will give you a lot of new ideas

ps. you should make a changable layout and then I will make a doremi skin for your whole website. OR if you want to, I could make a doremi layout for your portfolio website, yes?

oekaki is something i used to have and then it broke .. i dunno why but it was a long time ago and i probably did something wrong. the software sucked, too. but that would be a cool feature and i'd like to sort of merge it with the forum so you don't have to have a seperate account.

Oh another thing for the uploader, is it possible to upload a folder? Like, upload all the files that are in a folder at once?

So you'd have 2 "Browse" things. The top one with only one file and the second one, where you can select folders and it would upload all the files (that are allowed) to the uploader at the same time.

Either that or you could seperate the paths on your computer by a ;. That was you could upload a lot of files at the same time which is good for me when I scan my drawings, cause I always wait til I have a few and I don't want to put them into one file.

there's 2 problems with a folder upload. first is that i'd have to set a cap on how many images in a folder would be allowed, and second if there was a file in the folder that was not allowed it would suddenly stop. it would take me a while to code but i could do it. what i would prefer is the multiple file uploader, so you could upload more than one image at a time. i dunno how to do this yet, but i'm sure it's easier than i think.

probably, another thing for the uploader; tags that have been used should be added to the "existing tags" list if that's possible.

nvm that's already a feature lmao.

Im not sure if this qualifies as an actual "feature" or just a bugfix, but I was thinking of allowing people to stream music that is posted on the forums instead of having to download it for a quick listen. Every time I try to stream a song I get a message on WMP stating "Windows Media player has encountered a problem while playing the file".

that's not so much a bug with the site as it is with your machine, but i would prefer to have a player present rather than people have to use external software. for the time being i'd recommend using quicktime as the default player for mp3's on websites.

You should make some alt color themes here.

Post by: rtil on March 2, 2009 12:44 AM
that takes a REALLY long time. what i could do is make a folder of assets and a color guide, and if someone took the time to make one i could make an extra skin.

the first big part of this process is redesigning the site. this will be the 5th ( i think ) redesign. i'm going for a cleaner, simpler layout that looks the same in all browsers. code will be html strict 4.01 and w3c validated (minus some of the forum output) which will make it future proof and much easier to edit. this will mostly encompass getting rid of a table-dominated layout and replacing it with a div layout. i will still use tables for some features (mostly because inline-block doesn't render correctly in IE7 and below), but the new layout is 90% div tags.

you can keep track of my redesign progress here (http://www.thebackalleys.com/index2.php). comments and critique are welcome. please note that graphical changes will be saved for last and if a link or design element is broken it means i haven't gotten around to it yet.

this summer, if i added a drawing board (like this software http://www.ninechime.com/coonikaki/index.p...4&pageno=0) (http://www.ninechime.com/coonikaki/index.php?sort=4&pageno=0)) to the site, would any of you be interested in using it?

your forum account would be part of it so you wouldn\\\'t have to sign up

if you send me the graphics I would be HAPPY to make a new layout. This time not a themed one probably. It's really fun to make layouts.

it's less about the colors and images then it is the coding structure and the javascript errors i can't fix. when i get out of school i will be updating the forum to a clean, more recent version. then i will move the database over to that and i'll make a layout package for people who'd like to make a seperate theme.
