There's no concrete theme or concrete anything for the comics, really, so, if anything, the name is the most fitting title it could have.

What can I say,
this is Dragons With Pom Poms I hate to retread old and broken ground.
Also, I'm new to this whole "making super fancy comics" thing, so I'd really love criticism. This isn't Deviantart.
I'm currently working on improving the layout of the panels since one person told me they were a tad confusing.
ok
well my criticism would be a blog is a horrible format for delivering artwork
typically they don't have any readers and blogs should be left to the livejournals of the world

Well, yeah, I totally knew that. Unfortunately, it's all I can do right now since I don't have money to afford a website, and I know jack shit about designing a website and all that.
My hope is that, when I get enough money saved up for about a year or so, I'll get an actual website and use that to host the comics.
Trust me, every time I visit the comic the fact I'm using blogspot punches me in the kidneys
a website is relatively cheap ($5-$10/mo and domain registration is like $20/year) so once you save up some go for it
then you can install something like wordpress or a free comic/blog dealio and it's all freely yours to customize
it's even better if you know how to program for the web

I'm anticipating march when, my whitewater rafting job apparently opens up again so I can start making cash again.
I figure I should spend my time until then learning up on how to program on the web then, eh?
Also, it's not a punch to the kidneys, per se, it's more like a "God I hate blogspot fffff", if anything.
Posting the first two panels sans dialogue just because.
The first comic I used as an opportunity to work on shading and figuring out how shadows are formed and all that stuff. I'm not quite sure how well I did, but it was still a good practice because I still learned a think or two I should pay attention to when I'm drawing shadows.
This comic I'm working on making people distinguishable. I have a problem that probably could've been avoided a long time ago but I ignored it.
I'm only really good at drawing myself. I can draw myself, but as soon as I try to draw someone else they look like me. So, this comic has three different characters and I'm seeing if I can get them to look different with making them all different ethnicities that would be very easy to differentiate or giving them grossly odd-shaped heads.
The second panel's drawing is a lot better than the first one, since the first one I was designing the characters. If I have time before Monday, I'll go back and redo panel one to make it fit the visual quality of panel two. Besides, even more practice with that whole distinguishing characteristics I'm working on. I'm working on things such as head shape, nose shape, positioning of stuff on the fact, various marks on the face (the small freckle under my left eye, and the three freckles on the right side of the middle character's forehead, although the picture has been resized so small you can't see them). The little things.
Not just physical traits, either, but mannerisms and habits and how the react to various things and whatnot. It won't be so noticeable in this comic, but in future ones maybe I can work on that.
Unfortunately, all my work with making the characters discernible is out the window because when I colored the characters I colored the hair colors that i felt fit the character, and they're all different, so... shit.
So, I have the pictures in links. If you care, give the lineart a look and tell me what I can do to help distinguish characters more. One person suggested I move features of the face around, like have the nose lower or higher among other things, so I'll keep that in mind. Again, it's not noticeable because the character is facing front, but while the side characters have earlobes, the one in the middle does not (recessive alleles and all that).
Anyway, yeah, here are the panels, advice and stuff ahoy.
Panel 1 (http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee181/topcatyo/preview.png)

I like it
although I don't go for a cartoon style of anatomy frozen in a still position
but the fact that the humor is retreaded or cutesy is refreshing
I didn't get the joke, so I'm just assuming it's one of these random humor things... still not bad! I like the drawing style and it made me smirk a little
But GOD DAMN! Whenever I see this topic's title, the word porn catches my eye!
not too keen on 'random' humour to be honest but keep at it!
also some different facial structure will make your characters vary GREATLY its my special move when it comes to character design ; D
i actually really liked the way you drew in the beginning of the comic before you cleaned up your line work. idk why, but i think it looked cuter that way

I do my best not to make the humor completely random like "Oh look, this guy's wearing a hat and NOW HE'S ON FIRE", but this comic came in a moment of weakness.
And because I had just watched The Thing and it was such an awesome movie.
Dragons With Porn Porns.

I attempted different head shapes, but they're really hard to get down pat. On one hand, if you go too subtle (like this comic), people wouldn't notice the difference in shape unless they were specifically looking for it. However, too obvious and it starts to become ridiculous.
It's finding that nice, even middle ground that I'm having trouble with.
I'll keep at it.
Thanks for the criticisms and comments, I'm taking all of it to heart.

Not only that, but I'm going to be naturally inclined to hate my comics because... well, I dunno, I'm just never fully satisfied with the stuff I produce. It's what motivates me to put the effort into improving the next one.
before you start up your own webcomic you should decide whether you want to focus on being an artist or a writer
decide between those two and focus on that for a while before attempting to be both. not everyone has the talent to be legitimately funny AND a kickass artist, and you shouldn't let one get in the way of the other - bad writing can ruin good art and vice versa, so either way your work is gonna look worse than it actually is.

Machine guns are especially accurate if used by specially trained pawns.

well, not all webcomics have to be funny. some comics are great and interesting because they have really cool art or compelling stories or something. maybe you should try taking your comic in a different direction :/
regardless, i think you should change your drawing style. it's kind of boring. sometimes drawings can enhance the comic's humor. u should try some different stuff because what you have right now isnt really working. i think it has some potential tho
Quote from: Sashurawell, not all webcomics have to be funny. some comics are great and interesting because they have really cool art or compelling stories or something. maybe you should try taking your comic in a different direction :/
I would much rather keep the comic as a humorous comic and instead try to (hopefully) get it to be funny.
Quoteregardless, i think you should change your drawing style. it's kind of boring. sometimes drawings can enhance the comic's humor. u should try some different stuff because what you have right now isnt really working. i think it has some potential tho
I think the main problem with my style right now is that I'm mostly just doing stock poses and whatnot. I'll have to switch it up and do some different things with it and make it less of a guys-just standing-there-with-their-arms-doing-things art style but have them doing more dynamic poses and not stand at the exact same angle. I kinda started this comic to work on my art in the first place, but as I've found out, the artwork is just one of the many things I need to work on.
I'm learning all I can from this.
i think too many people are making comics about college-age kids 'doing stuff' (same with flash series and whatnot) which is why you're getting a bitter reaction (aside from the writing which is going for this 'unexpected punchline' thing). the chess one would have been funny without the last two panels slapped onto it.

Because I was totally going for "well thought-out" here.
Hence why I state how it's such an original and amazing joke plenty of times both in post following the comic as well as the post that linked to the comic in this thread.
You see, my good sir, I was going for the perfect storm of rauncy humor. The Large Hardon Collider is a concept which, in itself, seems to juvenile and simple, but really it's used as a guise, a veneer, if you will, to the actually entirely more clever joke throughout.
You see, in the comic itself we have the Large Hardon Collider, which may seem like a case of your standard letter reversal to get a whole new object and meaning, but it is all actually a metaphor for the pornography industry as a whole. We have the two penises (peni?) about to collide into each other while countless, faceless spectators watch in anticipation. The penises are the porn movie itself, the crane representing the producers of the porno and getting everything in its place. The spectators are the unseen fans that view the movies over the internet or though the other various methods. Some of them take notes to take away as knowledge on how to make their sexual experiences better. The unnoticeable door in the background represents the door to opportunity and how, in the porn industry, it gets smaller, experiences shrinkage, and cannot be seen unless one
really looks for it.
The joke is expanded in both the title and the caption of the comic. "The Large Hardon Collider test goes underway" is slightly more veiled than you might think. The word "test" can be extended to create the word "testicles", which happen to be synonymous with the image of a phallus. At the same time, the word "test" can also be used to mean the word "experiment". When one decides to try homosexual intercourse, it is referred to as "experimenting", like with these two penises about to try what being together is like.
The title, "Hot Stuff Coming Your Way" is introduced to, once again, lull the reader into the false idea that this comic is juvenile and not the well-crafted metaphor it is. The "hot stuff" is obviously the man's ejaculate that he expels when he reaches climax during intercourse, "coming your way" contains the word "coming" which sounds like the word "cumming", derived from the word "cum", which is also the male's ejaculate.
The blog post that accompanies this comic is full of various metaphors and allusions to human sexuality that to go into detail would require a novel, but allow me to list a few. The line "Boy am I mature!" both lampshades the fact that
some people (such as you) may lack the intelligence to see past the juvenile joke that acts as the mere book cover to this deep essay. However, it is a sentence that also equivocates, as the maturity referenced in the sentence also refers to one reaching puberty, when one becomes interested in sex and various sex-related topics. All this from one sentence! You can imagine how describing the whole blog post would be like considering that sentence's metaphors and hidden meanings pale in comparison both in intelligence, wit, and size compared to every other sentence in the blog post. That was a mere warm-up.
So, I am sorry you lacked the elementary level of reading comprehension to truly understand the depth of the comics I produce. If you truly wish to read "literature" that is more to your level of intelligence, I suggest giving this (http://cad-comic.com/index.php) a look. Who knows, you might find it stimulating.

Was that supposed to be an autoplay? Because even after clicking the flash it didn't work...
Quote from: rtilyou've crossed the line of obscurity into the territory of complete lack of effort
Yeah, I'm going to start putting actual effort into the comics again this week. Two weeks in a row is not good and it'll just snowball from there if I don't kick the habit now.
go hire a writer and see how it works out
Quote from: MishkaMashgo hire a writer and see how it works out
this
but notsomething like "oh I have a friend who's funny I'll get him as a writer"
like, someone who can actually
write comics
There are two reasons I will not do that.
1.) If I don't have the money to get a website or anything, I would obviously not have the money to hire a writer.
2.) On weeks where I actually try to come up with a good joke (there are a couple), I like the practice. I want to try to not suck shit at writing. So, experience is the best way to learn. I may have shitty jokes for a while, but I'm writing these comics for fun, I don't have a website (again, yet) to pay for that hosts the comics and you guys seem to have an endless supply of biting criticisms, so I see no problem with trying to get better.
Good day. Now I must work on next week's comic.

New comic, flame away. (http://dragonswithpompoms.blogspot.com/2009/05/028-going-down-down-down-down-down.html)
that one was ok
the stuff you write under your comic is creepy, since no one reads it/cares it seems as if you're talking to yourself

Hey that one I like!
This the first one of his I seen tho
that was pretty good
now that one was good
ive always wondered what the point of having an elevator man was
Quote from: roland deschainive always wondered what the point of having an elevator man was
so that you don't have to spend 0.5 seconds pushing a button
also that was pretty good
I'm glad this one wasn't shit
Quote from: rtilthe stuff you write under your comic is creepy, since no one reads it/cares it seems as if you're talking to yourself
Yeah, not very many people read it, but I do know my one friend (in real life) reads it and occasionally someone else will read it. Either way I enjoy writing the stuff, even if no one reads it.
It's kinda like making desktops. No one is going to use them but I like having them there anyway.
Quote from: roland deschainive always wondered what the point of having an elevator man was
I always figured it'd be company/food if the elevator ever got stuck for 20 hours or something like that.
Did I make it clear enough that it was an elevator they were on? I can tell you guys understood (as far as I know), but looking at the comic today I noticed I really didn't put any clues that they were on an elevator other than the joke the guy tells or the description below the comic.

I think showing the edges of the doors and the guy saying "I got it." accomplishes this well enough. What confused me at first though was the first 4 panels showing the doors opening. At first glance the unbroken vertical lines are just visually confusing and don't look like anything elevator related until we see the guy. I think if you were to replace those 4 panels with one panel showing the entire elevator with it's doors just begining to open, it would get your intentions across much more simply.
i like this one, nice twist on an old joke

Ah, thanks. My friend also mentioned that the first four panels were confusing as well and, looking at it, yeah, they're weird. I'll fix that up.

Fah, nothing special about this comic (http://dragonswithpompoms.blogspot.com/2009/05/029-only-mildly-based-off-of-true-story.html)

Here's one of them there comics. (http://dragonswithpompoms.blogspot.com/2009/05/031-van-hemochromatosis.html)
I'm starting to do the comics a bit ahead of time again. Maybe, eventually, I can do them early enough to spend the rest of the week making the joke good.
You do realize basically 1/3 of the world's population is type O?
Kind of useless for vampires if you ask me.
Quote from: Rob HalfordYou do realize basically 1/3 of the world's population is type O?

Vampires in general are pretty useless. After all, it's pretty impossible for them to exist. (http://io9.com/5241252/physicists-prove-that-vampires-could-not-exist?skyline=true&s=x)
type O can be used as a donor to more types than any other
O- can be given to anything
this comic is misinformed
banned
ps that article is gay because it mentions salems lot and in the stephen king mythos most vampires are type three which means that they cant infect other people and there are some type ones but they only make type 2 vampires who are stupid and usually die but they are the ones that make type 3 vampires who cant infect anything your article doesnt apply and its gay banned
i hate that i had to read the mini comic just to get this.
you should have done something more obvious/funny like the vampire died because the human had aids or something, idk. people shouldn't have to read an explanation just to understand the humor. then it sucks

I considered AIDS, but then I figured that every website ever has done AIDS to death. The joke was more just that the type O blood killed the vampire, the talk about antigens in the mini comic was just because I felt like being pedantic. I know that not everyone knows about the whole antigens thing, hence why I didn't include it in the main comic. Otherwise I would have.
tldr answer: The joke was just about a vampire exploding and not the anigens junk.
i tried to read your post but all i saw was "anigen"
Whoops, typos.
Speaking of which, what happened to Anigen?
so if you ignore the fact that O can give to more blood types than any other and that either way no blood would do harm to you if you drink it no matter the type and the fact that the comic has no basis in science,
what is the joke
like its the joke equivalent of a man drinking fruit punch and exploding for some reason because of it
make better jokes

How\\\'s this for an attempt at explanation: The antigens in a person\\\'s blood helps counteract some shit that fucks up vampires, and because of the lack of antigens, the vampire exploded because the shit fucked him up?
Also it\\\'s more the equivalent of a man drinking anti-aging potion and finding out it contains dairy and the man suddenly ages into dust in a second since he\\\'s lactose intolerant.
no use explaining it it's not getting any funnier

the comic would have been funny if the last panel had said "fucking brilliant" or perhaps even nothing at all but that's just me i'm into all that meta-humor whatever you want to call it
and wtf you go to italy and all you have to talk about is what they play on tv
Quote from: dvvebbbsiuohow was italy
Italy was great. It's truly a beautiful country, and the mountains and all the old buildings that people still use are all very cool. Everyone I met there was really nice. Well, except their roads are ridiculous. Their roads are about the size of one lane in America, and that would pretty much be four lanes for them. You've always got people weaving in and out of cars on their Vespas or whatever (which are really popular there) and everyone's always cutting someone else off. It's only possible for them to even navigate on the roads like that because every car is quite tiny (compared to American cars).
I'd say the best part about Italy was all the amazing views they had. I could see miles down this one valley from the battlements of a castle (that also acted as a restaurant). On the only road down to Sorrento, there's this one place to stop where you can look over the tiny stone wall there to see an infinite distance away. On the first three days in Italy, I stayed with some family members that lived there, and they took us on a bike ride. Enormous, beautiful mountains surrounded us, and they were so close it was unbelievable. At the end of the bike ride we stopped at this little spot by the road leading into some forest. It was a beautiful place, but it seemed like a simple forest. However, I had to take a pee, so I went up a little hill to get somewhere secluded and I found the most amazing sight. The trees opened up and there was a field full of flowers up to your kneecaps along with grass, and the enormous mountains seemed so much closer, but they weren't they were just enormous and you could see a tiny area that was the town several miles across that was located right at the base of the mountain. Seriously, that shit was breathtaking.

Yeah, that totally makes sense.
Quote from: rtilthe comic would have been funny if the last panel had said "fucking brilliant" or perhaps even nothing at all but that's just me i'm into all that meta-humor whatever you want to call it
Yeah, you're right, it would have been better with just "fucking brilliant" in the last panel. Shit.
Quoteand wtf you go to italy and all you have to talk about is what they play on tv
It's certainly not all I have to talk about. What was on TV just makes for a better comic.
