this is kind of like [topic=3090]number stations[/topic] so if that kind of thing didn't interest you, this definitely won't.
my friend showed me this site of a group of people back in the 60's and 70's called "phone phreaks" who spent their free time recording and hacking rotary and dial pulse phone networks with reel tape recorders all over the world. most of the recordings are sounds of phones being connected through operators and switchboards, sometimes they explain what is going on. actually the main guy talks too much sometimes but it's still interesting history. some recordings also document the different sounds used based on location and era.
phone trips (http://www.wideweb.com/phonetrips/)
you need realplayer to play these btw lmao
http://www.wideweb.com/phonetrips/desmoins.ram (http://www.wideweb.com/phonetrips/desmoins.ram) <- some guy fucking around
http://www.wideweb.com/phonetrips/netsounds1.ram (http://www.wideweb.com/phonetrips/netsounds1.ram) <- some history of phone and routing sounds
http://www.wideweb.com/phonetrips/classtack1.ram (http://www.wideweb.com/phonetrips/classtack1.ram) <- guy calls the phone sitting next to him after routing his call thousands of miles in a loop
i don't know why, but i like listening to these kinds of things. there's also great sounds in these that could be used in cartoons
someone should sample some of those sounds and make some music.
I heard a man once used a whistle from a captain crunch cereal box to do something like this. as far as number stations go, this has to be my favorite one. it's too fucking creepy.
