Title: wacommmmm
Post by: shura on December 28, 2008 04:52 PM
sorry, for making so many art threads! i promise this is the last one. so anyway,

WOO!

my dad surprised me with a wacom for hanukkah!! fuck line tool shit =D

so here is a screenshot from a flash that i've been working on since rtil helped me crack CS4
i originally drew the outline with my touchpad, but with the wacom i was able to redraw, color, and refine it. I wish i could have done a better job shading, but i honestly have no idea how to do proper cel-shading in flash. im still pretty unfamiliar with it =/
the reason why the background is plain, is because im currently trying to make a nice background in photoshop

so yeah, that's pretty much it. i know it isn't much, but criticism and advice would be much appreciated =]

the cel shading looks fine to me. good choice of colors

look forward to seeing a backdrop

do the characters have faces? i've noticed all your full bodied characters never have one. while it could be on purpose, i think it's important characters at least have eyes they're the windows to our soulssssss

i hate drawing faces DX
i might just make her hair longer so i can just cover up her face =/

actually...

there is a part of the flash where you do get to see her face. i'll color it and put that up here

You seem to be very familiarized with anatomy,( wich I know its basic for an animator and Im working on it too).

I dont really mind the eyes and such, I guess that is part of your style.

i saw someone mention "fisheye" in another thread, so i thought i would give it a shot.

this is a girl playing soccer. why she has no pants, i do not know. i just omitted them for some reason. whatever, people play soccer in their underwear, right? in japan??

so here's my first attempt at fisheye, drawn in flash. i didn't use the "fisheye filter and trace" technique because my photoshop doesn't have a fisheye filter, so i drew this freehand. but i did use another picture as a reference. i had A LOT of trouble with this. =P
i don't feel great about this piece, but i think it came out alright for my first time =/

only things i see wrong is her left arm seems too thin, and the right leg kinda confuses me but yea first time

Post by: rtil on December 29, 2008 09:49 PM
a fisheye filter wouldn't work so well because it requires depth to know what to distort more. so it would probably look strange on art that wasn't meant to be viewed in a fisheye lens to begin with. this is a pretty good shot at it , i think there are a few lines that are causing problems but it's not really worth mentioning. a lot of issues can be cleverly solved with coloring & tone

OKAY. so i know i never draw faces. facial anatomy is difficult for me, especially noses.  so i've been practicing a lot.

question about coloring:  i tried to color this by using cel-shading on it, and it came out terrible. is there any sort of shading method i can use that will allow me to blend colors more and make them softer? i know photoshop has soft-shading methods, but i have no idea how to do that =/
also, i prefer drawing in flash to photoshop, because flash has the line-correction thing.

can anyone offer help?
oh yeah, and here's the pic. sorry it looks like she has down syndrome D:

Did you tried to adjust the "smoothing" on the brush? Because lowering it down gives you more control with the brush.

yeah, copy-pasting isn't going to work

you need to export it as a PNG, so when you've got your lineart down, go to FILE>EXPORT>EXPORT IMAGE... save it as a PNG, match the screen dimensions when the window pops up (select 'match screen' and include 'full document size', etc). then just uh, open it up in photoshop

and that should do it

ta-dah

i know how to do that, but the problem is that whenever i save it as a .png and open it up in photoshop, the lines that i drew are part of the background and not on a separate layer. so it's a hassle when i cel-shade because it means that all the lines are going to appear underneath the color, which is not what i want =[

ah, i think i forgot a part: try saving it with the 'colors' option as '24 bit with alpha channel' when the export PNG window pops up. that should save only the line art and not any of the background

okay, here's another thing i did in flash
the violin was a bitch to draw. so were the hands. i had to use my own violin as a model so i could get it right. it looks kinda messed up tho i don't know what i should do to fix it =/

i hope this drawing doesn't look as stiff as all the others!
i took jeinu's advice and exported it as a .png with no background. i might spruce this up in photoshop.

Of course. I just refuse to do what everyone here wants me too. Nobody here ever seemed to like me in the first place so I just do whatever I feel like with little regard for what comes of it.

I think the Violinist looks fine, but it looks like there's a bit of his nose missing. The shading thing too...

Love the lineart but the lines you've used for the neck are a bit thick.

I think a trilby would look pretty bitchin if it's a guy you're drawing

For some reason i think flat/rudimentary colours (ie no shading) would suit your stuff HOWEVER if you're gonna do that then be careful what colours you pick, otherwise it'll look garish and not very smart at all yo.

keep it up!!  and borrow me your tablet sometime

I said i would do a picture of Redm, and here it is!

it's unfinished. i HAD a colored version, but flash quit unexpectedly so i lost it all. You can see i colored the eye and that's about it. so im in the process of recoloring. im just putting up what i have right now. i do plan on finishing it. advice? criticism? I hope you like it red. I was afraid that it would come out looking to pointy/anime/indiana jones.

Or just draw a part of the eye so it shows that its there.

i would pick a lighter tone for the shading of the clothes, and i'd use something with a hint of blue in it. i'd also only use a single tone for the shading, and if you want variation use a gradient. when you use more than two as you have here it gets very complicated because of the nature of vectors. in reality, the darkest tone of anything that has roundness to it is closer to where the shadow meets the light as opposed to the edge of the object.

below is a poor example of what i am talking about
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.toxiclab.org%2Fimg%2F2005121210_Img6.gif&hash=605286c369d580f965d80e5fb69544884dda5430)

in either case, i think a gradient would be better suited. gradients can express dimensionality a lot easier than what are essentially shapes of color
Title: wacommmmm
Post by: shura on January 24, 2009 07:34 AM

so here's a little walking cycle that i created today.

http://spamtheweb.com/ul/upload/050209/78407_womaaaaan.php (http://spamtheweb.com/ul/upload/050209/78407_womaaaaan.php)

i know it isn't much, but i tried
i wanted to give the girl a lot of 'movement'. i know her bouncing hair and boobies may be a tad exaggerated,  i had so much fun drawing them

some advice would be great. i made a few other movement cycles, but they're too choppy.
er, so yeah that's about it. any advice for making it look less shitty?
thanks

Post by: mishkamash on February 6, 2009 02:59 AM
it's really good, but i wouldn't make the breasts flippity flop like that

but it's exaggerated well so w/e

Post by: rtil on February 6, 2009 04:27 AM
the boobs would be less distracting if the shoulders were going up and down with each step, that's what they would be doing to counteract the motion of her hips

i did another drawing. i was gonna draw more battered women/rape victims, but i guess i creeped people out, so here's a picture of the opposite. a girl that will fuck bitches up >:C

i'll do cell-shading and add more textures later

well, i can draw fat people, and i can draw guys, but i've actually never attempted to draw old people. their skin is so saggy and wrinkly. i think it would be really difficult, but i can try!

As for the walk cycle aside from what rtil said I guess, lighting effects would probably take some attention to whatever flaws one may find.
I'm assuming that she's walkning on a red carpet, and usually there are tons of people taking pictures and whatnot, so the flashes of light reflecting off her face and blah blah blah would distract the viewers

Post by: zomfgbie on February 6, 2009 04:38 PM
well that was an impressive 4 pages

on the walk cycle make her boobies bounce less

the beck is too long

the body is too far down and a bit long

the hips aren't wide enough

*neck

her torso isnt curvy enough it looks like a guy

her head is too centered and should be more to the left

why is it all of your pieces on your first page are good and show a sense of anatomy and this drawing completely throws all of that away
Title: wacommmmm
Post by: rtil on February 7, 2009 06:35 PM
actually i think if she just moved the head down it would solve nearly all of those problem
Title: wacommmmm
Post by: SHADOWFOX2 on February 7, 2009 07:10 PM

The body structure on this one annoys me, it's short with a long neck. But that's an exception, I love your drawing style.  It's delicious turtles love bingo long time.

so i used to draw models from magazines and i would only focus on proportions of the body. i never drew faces. sometimes i didn't even draw heads. which is why a lot of my full-bodied characters usually don't have them. it's also why my style is very stiff, plain, and boring. i tried finding a style that suited me in the past, but the closest thing to what i was doing was anime. i drew anime for awhile, but i hated how androgynous and simple the characters looked so i tried to break away from that too. i guess i just need to keep drawing shit. i don't know what to do.

oh btw, more motion cycles are in the works. i'll try and finish them up this week and post them, but i have 2 midterms this week so idk. and the next motion cycle will have an old fat man

Argh! Fuck Wacom! Goddamn mainstream tablets! People keep talking about it like it was the only kind of tablet on the entire market! Wacom's grossly overpriced shit! Not much more comfortable than a normal one, ten times as expensive (and not even half as big if you don't want to spend 500 bucks on it...) that shit only sells because it has a popular and common name...

I really like your style, tho...

Well drawing more is basically the best thing to do in your situation.
I can imagine that being a fashion designer wouldn't try to design clothes using disproportioned dummies.
I guess faces wouldn't really matter either considering that it's not what you were working on then.

But uh yeah just keep practicing

behold, the male anatomy. like usual, im gonna do the shading and coloring later on. i was gonna put like a gun or something in his left hand, but i don't know how to draw guns freehand, so i need to practice that first. i know the hair and face look really bad. i'll fix these. im working on an animal and a fat lady right now. i can do the nerdy kid, but i really cannot draw old people :/

that male guy is pretty good, i think the proportions are good, but its hard to tell cus i cant see his knees. but its good! his muscles are also right, its nice to see you trying something else!!

oh and i might give you tips on how to draw old people but you should try yourself first. it might seem hard but its really fun to draw all those wrinkels and details and aaaaaaa im gonna draw one right now
