Title: the lighthouse girl (working title)
Post by: rtil on December 16, 2008 09:58 PM
jenna smith (http://www.channel-square.com/) and i have a final production to do for our school next semester. we're doing a 2D cartoon and we'll be making it with traditional animation, photoshop and flash. myself, and maybe jenna, will post updates here from time to time with concept art, boards and whatnot. so to start i'll post a concept painting of the main character with one of the 3 "monsters" that will appear in the cartoon. i won't reveal the story or anything yet. but it has changed - it is no longer about the two characters i created a few months back. i think those characters are better left on paintings and nothing else. we came up with this story a few days ago together and it's a big improvement. we're both really excited for it. because it's for school, it absolutely has to be done by early may. in fact, we'll even have a final date on which it will be guaranteed finished once the semester starts. it's going to be a lot of work, but it will be the main focus of the first half of the year, and we'll be working together. anyway, here is the painting.

here we see the girl under a monster's bridge. this bridge usually has a river running under it, but it's mid-summer and it dries up as the mountains lose their snow cover. it is reduced to a few small puddles during this time. however, this monster relies on the water to live, or at least he thinks so. he used to be a fish, but because he has become so lethargic and loves to stay in the cool under the bridge he has grown very large and his fins are starting to recede. he grew tiny arms and legs, but they are not enough to support him. so you can always find him under the bridge by the mountains. he loves fruits and tiny animals who like to nap under his shadow and the bridge as well. but he only eats the fruits, not the animals.

well i can't fix this scrolling issue .. looks perfect in opera, there's no scrollbar in firefox, and it looks totally fucked up in IE. and since most of you use IE and firefox, i'll try to make some hackneyed workaround

ok now it's kind of sort of fixed. it just shows the entire stretched post in IE and firefox, and is still perfect in opera. i'll try to figure out a real fix someday. maybe when IE finally adds support for overflow-x and overflow-y

nice shading

howd you get the soft lighting effect? and what program will you use to animate it?

i would guess you do shading in photoshop and outlines and animation in flash but a lot of people in my animation classes used toonboom or animo

Well I believe it will certainly be visually stunning and enjoyable to watch. The story seems pretty flat though. I'm not convinced any of the things happening needed to happen other than to simply get the lighthouse going. It's almost as if you've skipped introducing a conflict and just started around a climax and then simmered into a denouement.

Still, I can't wait to watch if for no other reason than for the sake of seeing very pretty things.

Love how it's comin' out so far. The storyboards for the most part look very clear and nicely polished. The only thing that caught my eye negatively was the shot where the girl and her friend are leaving the lighthouse door (10). The angle of that shot looks almost the same as the one where her friend is turning the lights on, in the panel right above it (7). Was that intended? Otherwise the action of the hand turning into a key and locking the door behind it is nicely set up, but the shot before it happens seemed a little repetetive.

cool story - the song we wanted to use is from skies of arcadia. since the game was published by sega, i needed to contact them for permission to use the song. but finding contact information for the company was near impossible. i resorted to printing out and physically mailing a letter to their US headquarters two weeks ago. i was 99% not expecting a reply.

but 2 days ago i got a letter back saying that they basically could not care less so long as the song is used non-comercially, is not defaming, and credit is given - which won't be a problem. of course now my school has to look at a copy of the letter and hopefully none of the higher-ups will still request this ridiculous ballet of faxes and documents that we originally would have had to go through. but now at least we know sega is responsive, which i thought was really neat.

At least in the future you can use other music from their games without having to worry about the process. That's one thing you can depend on the company for, their music's typically always great.

Quote from: GRINACEwhats ur zoom when u animate?

Uh, what kind of question is that?
That differs of what kind of scene it is and what you're animating. You flip between the zooms til you find what works for you. Isn't that quite logical?

Title: the lighthouse girl (working title)
Post by: rtil on March 13, 2009 09:20 AM
yeah the zoom level varies greatly from scene to scene. also when we clean up the animation it may be very different, we're going to try to go for the most painterly style we can achieve to mix with the backgrounds for the final colored cels.

just an update here, the rough animation is almost done. i hit the 2 minute mark a few days ago which means i've done over 120 seconds of full body rough animation in less than a month - way more than i can say i've ever done in the past. most of it is on 4's but it's not a big deal as cleaned up frames will be easy to inbetween. jenna has 6 more backgrounds to go then she can start cleaning up the animation. soon i will join her and after that we will color cels.

on another note, we have made some significant changes to the original boards. the main story hasn't changed but we had to drop 2 characters (the first and last ones she meets). we simply did not have time to add them in this tight schedule unfortunately. but we are happy with the changes we made and the story is still very strong. hopefully we will be done with everything animation-wise by mid-april and can spend the rest of the month putting the video together to do sound & post. if worst comes to worst we have until may 11th to finish this, but our goal is april 27th

don't really have anything to show , but if you want to see some more backgrounds just check out jenna's da (http://blvd-square.deviantart.com)

one of my freinds at uni did their whole animation with proper cels, took him 3 years to complete his final year animation D: it was only 2 and a half minutes long too, probably would have been done quicker if they didnt keep losing chunks of cels.

the only thing i can thank it for is doing a good job on exporting png sequences, even though i discovered it still doesn't play movie clips when you do that. the other options aren't as viable for lossless because, well, they're video, and sadly there were traces of frameskip.

exactly that. I thought it'd be like metropolis circuit. The wait for it was so long that everyone had super high expectations and even though the flash was good a lot of people were disappointed. With this, the expectations were even higher (for me) but I was not disappointed!

Warning text wall incoming...

I saw it at the 2pm show and I just wanted to say congrats on the piece ^__^ The visuals were pure and gorgeous eye-candy to look at! I sat watching and saying to myself, "Holy shit this is so top-class professional quality and it was done by only 2 people?! There is serious dedication to their craft in this." The backgrounds, landscapes, and day/night atmosphere were probably the strongest parts to me, especially the scene right after they left the house and we see the skyscape and bridge (also the tree part was great too). The green hand character was to me the best out all them all though because of the way he interacted with objects, opened/locked the door, swatted fireflies, and then played around with the um(blue cute things ^^; ). All these factors actually made him have the more believable character acting which is something I wished I'd seen more in the main character. The girl didn't really have much personality, since her eyes didn't wander around the landscape; she walked straight to her destination and then went back without a moment to get into her character. I would've liked to have seen a point where she skipped some rocks or played more with the blue things...maybe something as subtle as making a different face besides an ear to ear smile would have done it... heh idk. :b But overall those were the small things, and really this cartoon was just so solid on the technical parts, I guess it's the only thing I could think be fleshed out more. It definitely made me want to see more of the world, the actual reason for this strange magic lighthouse, and what the hand creature actually was (same for the blue things that provide it food to glow). Btw, the part where the hand scoops the water then swallows it haha, that was nice and I almost missed it because the camera moves and almost cuts it off. Anyways, great work! I don't know if you get this feeling sometimes, but there are moments in the process of animating where you just love seeing the world you are creating move and come to life that it gives you this rush of happiness that sits in your chest, I hope you had that moment somewhere because you and Jenna deserved it. :]

I watched the last two premiere's and I just couldn't stop gazing at the art and relaxing to the sound of the music. Everything was just so well done, but I think my favorite thing about the animation was the background art. Like, seriously. I'd never seen anything like it.

that was jenna's idea, originally it was going to be a straight beam but we thought it would be cooler to have it fly around and stuff

I saw it at the 2pm show and I just wanted to say congrats on the piece ^__^ The visuals were pure and gorgeous eye-candy to look at! the blue guys are called waddles
i'm glad you had those feelings watching it, i know that i did the first time i saw it which is rare when you're looking at your own work. it was probably the overwhelming feeling of finally being able to say "it's done" more than anything else. thank you for sharing that

The exact moment that it's available for viewing on a site aside from livestream (which lags to the point of a stillshot per minute with my crap connection) notify the hell out of me please. :B

I'm so glad I got to see it. The animation was fucking gorgeous but being the 500th person to comment on this movie, I can't really bring much new to the table so uh, great job.

When you release it you can submit a link to the video to the portal and put flashads for some pocketchange. It'll probably get frontpage too.

well yeah, I'd think its an option for those who can't submit the movie itself it but would still like to advertise it to any audience.

Lmao so many people dont even realize that the massive size of a video converted to swf format would be.
Could flash honestly handle that export, let alone would I want to watch a preloader frame for 3 hours for a 5 min movie?
Title: the lighthouse girl (working title)
Post by: rtil on December 18, 2009 05:51 AM
it could, and an FLV container would reduce the size significantly, but then you'd have the problem of finding a good buffering tool and audio sync if it's not being streamed directly from another location. still, newgrounds is not a video site so it doesn't have its own tools for compressing video like vimeo and youtube. it's really impractical

TBH the only thing I was honestly looking forward to for an NG version is a cool menu, but seeing how impractical that is, it aint worth it.

thanks for putting it on vimeo, I missed the live events. great stuff, the background art was amazing, the animation was fluid, and the music was a perfect fit.
