Title: art thread
Post by: psi43 on December 7, 2008 08:15 PM
ok this time for real, I will post stuff I drew here. I will post every day I promise. For each day I will not post I will ban squeef for a day, sounds fair ok.

OK BEFORE YOU SAY "LAWL TRAISED" no it's not traced but I DID use a reference.
day #1:

The pencil shading is decent.

Have you previously tried to study anatomy? I dont really like to use the wooden model as a reference.

Just a moment, ill link you something that might come in handy for you.

Edit: fuck. The public uploader only allows 10 mb. I was gonna give you a guide in anatomy and proportions by Andrew Loomis.

Theres not a lot of resemblance to wade, other than his beard thing.
You should work on the face shape to make him more recognizable.

It looks like for most of them you didn't sketch em out first, you went straight to drawing.  And although it seems you have a nice grasp of anatomy in its basic scheme, it falls apart in structure.

Also is it wierd I recognize the character in the first pic?  (the best one in my opinion too)

There.

Okay Psi, this is some real criticism so a-listen up.
Your drawings almost look like they are never ever sketched out or anything, like you sorta go with it. The wrinkles, scratches and like, cracks on the WoW thing dont really look that well done and look like you just kinda go with it as well. I'd suggest working on proportions first and then going on to like, wrinkles and stuff. I mean, you got a sense of where everything is supposed to be, but it just doesnt come out right.

I'm no pro uber artist or anything, im just tryin ta think of something ta help ya out.
Title: art thread
Post by: Loathsome on December 9, 2008 11:31 AM
If you'd redraw something someone drew it's still copying. It'd look like a sloppy trace. You don't have to draw over a drawing to trace it. That bull thing looks awfully much like a trace, a very sloppy one.

Make your own shit.

lmfao

well I am trying to draw other things to learn how to draw certain things like, for example, these cracks on the armor of that WoW bull thing.

Also, Dave and Jseed, I do sketch my drawings out. There are pencil strokes all over them but my scanner kind of removes them cause they're not dark enough.

What I would do is start with drawing like people and not cartoon characters. Doesn't matter if they're crap. They'll turn good with practise. If you do that you'll get a basic understanding of how body structure works and it'll make drawing easier.

the third picture is a little confusing because im not sure from what angle the body is being viewed from. part of it looks like it's being viewed from below, but other parts look like their being viewed from the side. i think the leg that's bent is a little too short. the rest of your drawings look really good tho

i know that cartoon characters don't have to be anatomically correct exactly, but i think you need to work a little more on your proportions. when hands hang down at the side of the body, they usually reach the middle of the thigh. so make them longer. i can't see how long the legs are, but you might need to make them longer too
Title: art thread
Post by: psi43 on December 14, 2008 08:17 PM
thanks for the advice, will try to keep that in mind

also, I used photoshop a little and played around with it, this is the result:

it's only a few gay brushes I downloaded and blender options but who cares.
Title: art thread
Post by: Flash on December 14, 2008 08:52 PM
The blending is pretty cool.
Dude, my only advice is that you lay off the downloaded brushes. At first they might seen cool but they're worthless when it comes to the flow of the abstract effects, which makes any signature tags/LPs you attempt to make with it look like shit because the effects are spread around following no general direction. I'm not talking about this image, but if you ever decide to do something else with Photoshop in that style, my advice is that you use only standard brushes and try to lay off the downloaded resources. This comes from a guy who used to make tags and LPs. :b

but I don't know how to even create nice looking curvy lines like that in photoshop, unless I used the pen tool which would take hours.

also, forgot to post this:

What she said, work on your anatomy. Maybe try drawing basic stick men with circles as joints to help you plan before you start.
You also seem to have this stiff quality to your lines. It gives the impression that you're not confident when you draw. Just keep practicing I guess.

Technically I could. It has the same functions, yeah. It would take longer because at one point, I used the spray paint brush to save time (for the dots in the background). That would take a little longer with flash 8 but yeah, it's doable.

If you meant earlier versions (cause flash 8 had filters and blenders already) then PROBABLY no. Would take a lot of trial and error.

thanks michelle you are by far nicer than the other michelle!

and jseed I know. It's actually weird; the other face was drawn without any kind of reference, the stalin was drawn with a reference.

You may not be the best drawing artist around, but most of your works are pretty creative

Stalin looks pretty drunk

I don't get why you make the lines so brutally strong, it really throws off the shading.

strong lines are dumb just sketch da fuck out of it

cause I dislike weak lines

You should try it... it's easier to create a kind of pre drawing with really weak lines before starting to draw the actual contures and details...
The shading willcover these lines later anyway

i really wish you would resize these. they're far too big considering how simple the sketches are

Use Ifranview to resize them.

I don't like the way Pinhead turned out and I don't like the way my scanner fucked up the shading on Malcolm but whatever!

don't outline noses, just the bottom parts. there is no line on your nose. use shading to represent the nose instead. and for shading try hatching and using the marks of your pencil to suggest the shape of the form instead of scribbles

I dunno... some elements, parts and proportions look really professional while others look very noobish...
I like your art but there often are small details that make your works look weird...
Example: The left eyebrow of Malc2olm.jpg (viewer's perspective) should not be smalle, but rather bigger than the right one (since it's closer to the point of view).
The left pupil is not in the center of the iris (which also looks a little oval). Detail, again... but it really takes the aesthetic of the picture.
The nose looks horrible because you didn't shade it, but rtil has already mentioned that... I really like Hellraiser's nose, tho!

Other than that, your works are really nice... maybe you should start to work with sketches a little more... it really helps on finding the right proportions, especially for the details you tend to ruin...

I do sketch but I don't post them.

And there is shading on the nose but my scanner ignores it cause it's too light, gay.

But yeah you're generally right about what you say.

Well, maybe sketching wasn't quite the word that describes what I am talking about or I just got you wrong... by sketching I mean sketch what you want to draw (in a light, gay way your scanner will ignore anyway) before drawing the actual lines and contoures... because it kinda looks like you were drawing each line directly. Don't be afraid of trying it, the sketches are a great guide and won't be visible anymore after shading it anyway.

oh I do that, too. I just draw hard lines for the scanner to acknowledge them.

you can usually muck about in photoshop to bring faint lines out
