im not Australian, but i heard about that internet ban. the article i read didn't have a list of the sites, but im sure this one is safe rtil. i think they're only banning child-pornography sites and stuff like that
doesn't matter what they ban. they have a mandatory internet filter in china, is that one safe?
you could argue the two governments are vastly different - and they are - but it's a step in the wrong direction. the government should never decide what you can and cannot do online, they can only combat it. trying to blank all of it instantaneously is only going to make matters worse.
I dont think this has even been put to practice yet.
the fact it even is is pretty sad
i remember ross bringing it up a while ago

na, well they're blocking child porn but also refused to confirm that they'd only be blocking illegal content - they've got the very ambiguous term of "unwanted sites" in their blacklist bullseye which is basically a catch-all that could potentially be materials they determine to be inappropriate and could so block without approval from any third party. Just like China!
NOW YOU MIGHT SAY 'SPOOKY STUFF' but i think it's a great thing because there are no adults in australia and so we can't be trusted to make informed decisions. I think it's a blessing that they're finally getting rid of this damn individual autonomy and chewing all our food for us!!
why have there been no protests or riots
all australians are pussies
i mean banning child porn is all for the better but theyre also banning a lot of normal porn, streaming video and download sites
i mean ye theyre supposedly illegal but really who cares
maybe their goal is to make australia a more sociable country. if we cant get what we want on the internet, maybe we'd actually get up off our asses and do stuff!
but most likely not
Quote from: Blordowbut most likely not
if it gets 'banned', they'll find other ways to get it. they always do. china's got cgiproxies, now australia will make use of them as well

awesome idea, finally we're getting those paedophiles out of their living rooms and into the real world! you know, to socialise.

yup. banning all these sites will probably just make people want to visit them more
I bet even if sites and shit get banned, there will be many ways to override the filter or whatever it is without any effort at all.
and that's why it's a waste of time
but the scary thing is that bypassing the mandatory filter is a federal crime, which makes visiting those banned website a crime as well. granted, i'm sure some of them were already a crime to visit (ie child porn), but i'm sure most of them don't constitute a violation for simply visiting
meanwhile, an australian resort plans a nude, anything-goes month-long party (http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE4AC4QA20081113)

apparently at least 50% of the websites on a preliminary list were regular porn sites, but what is on the final list is super secret and the government is blocking any requests for transparency via freedom of information appeals.
that is horrible
well, people will find out in due time and i'm sure an unofficial list will be compiled very quickly
Man1: so what are you in federal prison for?
Man2: looking at porn, you?
Man1: Arson

Ahaahaha, but yeah, the idea of that actually happening would be ridiculous.
