Title: Art
Post by: Miawshloubedadish on July 29, 2008 03:35 AM
Alright, so I've been listening a song on repeat and forced myself to draw something I would color. The thing is, I'm rusted, I am trying a new style and my anatomy is shit. So I would like having critics on it while it is undone. I left the sketch of it paler under the lineart so you can get the idea of the pattern and such. Things not blacklined will be transparent.

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv102%2FUnholydragon%2FBoard%2Faaroniscrazykaycriticplz.jpg&hash=f465ab2c37e9f341c5285c1c25ca00fca2cbbdaa)

(yeah first time trying futuristic stuff and I though of the design on the spot.)

EDIT EDIT EDIT: I love drawing long and thin. Just warning you.

very good!  I'm betting it'll look even better once you clear all the reference lines used for the anatomy and color in everything properly.
I pretty much suck shit at art myself, so i can't offer much serious criticism here.

the lower portion of the front leg is disaligned
legs can't really bend like that

i'd love to see a human being try to attempt anything like that pose in the first place. but that's actually what i like about it. cartoon characters can break the rules of bones being 'broken' and such. nothing really bothers me about the anatomy except his left (our right) hand. his pinky and ring finger are kind of floating off in weird places.

Very good peice even if I dont personally like how "sharp and jagged" it is, but thats me.

The only problem is like Rtil said is the hands, the other one behind the knee doesnt seem to be connected to anything. Given how his wrist is bent and the position of his hand you should be able to see some arm behind his hip. The other hand is just a porportion/perspective problem I feel. Look at the way his thumb and index finger is, then look at the rest of them. His fingers shouldnt be "Comin at you" they should be on the same plane as the finger and thumb if ya catch what I mean. I understand you thought the hand pose probably looked kinda cool but if you look at it...it looks wrong. In a way it looks like the pinky is just sticking out of her arm. So just fix the hands and I think youll have a really nice drawing there.

And I do love the pose and the design, very nice even if I dont particularly care for the style I can still respect an obviously nice piece of work that took some effort.

I am very pleased to receive such encouraging critics, thank you so much! I changed the inclinaison of the front leg a bit, added a part of the arm to be visible near the hip, and I tried to fix the hand. I'll admit the hand part confused me (B-Cube helped me understand, my english fail but I'm still learning) but I don't know if I fixed it correctly.

Thank you so much again, I would have never noticed this by myself.

Here's how it look so far. I would love to hear your opinion on it. When it will be good, I'll start coloring it

I think it's because both of the knees are different. one is pointy and one is curved.

One knee has a protector on it, which is why it has a round end. Maybe the legs are too inclined? Or is it more on the ankle level that is too inclined? Any suggestion on how I could fix the messy hand? Because I admit I don't really know how to fix it more than that.

It would be very helpful! And thank you again for the critics, I swear this is the only place where I get them...

i think re-drawing his left (our right) foot to be more angled in towards the body would probably solve a lot of the issues people are having with the pose.

I drew it all up again instead of tweaking it in photoshop. I tried to take in consideration what everyone told me up to now. If it's acceptable (I know a drawing will never, ever, be perfect in any point) I'll start the coloring.
Title: Art
Post by: rtil on July 30, 2008 07:28 PM
you should just go ahead and color it. after a while it gets to a point where tweaking starts to make the drawing worse. and toned coloring can add a lot of dimension to a drawing that linework never could.

Finished it a few days ago, I enjoyed doing the neo colors. I wish I was able to do some nifty digital speed vortex, but I couldn't. So have some horizontal matrix effect instead.

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv102%2FUnholydragon%2FBoard%2Faaroniscrazykay2copie-3.jpg&hash=09c2dfa6ed91b4f5f0546ed70d33c543f23fc75f)

Good thing I colored, I was getting really out of it.

That looks great, I love the colors. It doesn't need the vortex, the zooming matrix symbols work perfectly.

you should tone down those glow effects, they look a bit tacky

plus the background looks too flat compared to the guy on the board since it's off perspective-wise and in general it looks like some kind of cheap filter trick you pulled off at the last minute. if you're gonna go for a basic design bg instead of just draw a natural bg then at least make sure it cleans up well and matches the character's quality.

i think apophysis might be a fitting enough program for making an interesting vortex background
that or you could just find some ps brushes lyin' around the web
Title: Art
Post by: Miawshloubedadish on August 15, 2008 07:38 PM
Urg sorry for being so slow. Stuff happened. I'm not sure what to say here beside thank you over and over again.

Yeah I tend to overdo glowing, but I though in this case it would fit in the "digital neo laser" theme I was trying to get. The background was exactly that, I slapped some image I created on photoshop and tried to make some perspective in it. It didn't came out like I wanted, but background is one of my worst weakness presently. I try to practice it, but I still have a long way to go with that one. Thanks for the tips, I'll check what is this apophysis program, it sound very interesting. I'll try to avoid such errors next time.

To tell the truth, I am not fond of custom brushes that created all done images. I guess I just prefer to do it myself so I can say I did it all 100%. So that if I can ever start doing some traditional stuff, I'll be able to re-create effect I did on the computer somewhat the same.

So, is it a bad thing?

those look nothing like kanye west's glasses
and they're not "kanye west's" glasses, they're alain mikli shutter shades , a french designer that was nice enough to let kanye west wear his awesome glasses in his shitty video.

anyway, nice art. if you're gonna give a background i suggest vertical lines to compliment the horizontal ones. something simple

Mmm... I just found the glasses to be a nice add up to this guy wearing a striped shirt since it has lines in it. I had no idea where they came from, but I'll definitely check that french designer's stuff.

Although I doubt its a good thing to wear in real life. Seeing through these lines must be a real pain.

Also, thank you very much for your suggestion, I shall try them all to see the result which is the best or even post them all up for you guys to decide

Well the whole point was to make everything extremly simple and plain with a very detailed face. At first I tried not shading at all, but it looked very silly.

I do admit the buildings and windows are really cheap. I still can't draw them properly for some reason. Still working on that.

and no B-cube. I refuse. ):<

Some of the tentacle lines and building lines are over lapping.

the second one has the most promise
i think you should dull down the red so it's on the same level of saturation as the background

plus you should do something to the bg so there's an illusion of depth cause it seems kinda plain right now

in the octopus drawing i really like the clouds and the one big tentacle on the left thats looping around itself

and in the spidery drawing i like the wooden background you put on it the most
