well i've never really seen this show until the last couple of days since everyone has been making a big deal about the season finale. and i gotta say that i was pleasantly surprised. for an american-style anime on nickelodeon this show is really good. sometimes the dialogue is awkward/bad and they tie in these boyfriend/girlfriend drama into it but other than that it's top notch and the animation (ESPECIALLY in the season finale) is fantastic. mind you it's mostly done by koreans but it's the first good american anime i've ever seen. i mean i was really impressed by the season finale, almost enough to make me want to start at the beginning and watch all the way through. the hype is definitely there for a reason - this isn't crap like ben 10 or totally spies.
Well now its over so heh....
nothing's stopping me from downloading it
Hmm, maybe I'll give it a try. The last American-Anime (some segments done by Madhouse though) series I watched so far was The Boondocks and I didn't really like it that much.
lmao Rtil. You missed it. Last week they gave every episode! endin with the finale!
I gotta say that avatar is one of my favorites. I don't care if its American or not or whatever. I seriously think its a good show.

The last line is my favorite.
Same here fuzz..
We be jammin!
i've been watching it for a while
its very cute and has actual smooth fluid animation
its also apparently very expensive to produce
The show could have turned into a cliched' piece of crap if they had been lazy, but the unique storytelling (Nobody was completely evil, you heard everybody's side of the story), the pacing, the animation and the hundred or so supporting characters, who I cared much more about than Aang, turned it into something great. Zuko and his uncle were my favorite characters.
ive tried to watch it
i cant get past the anime aspect of it though. the style turns me off too much
then again, pretty much the only anime i CAN stomach is miyazaki
to Jazz:
Yeah I agree but it's also sad that the original voice for Uncle Iro passed. if u notice i think in the 2nd book where the characters have their own story. The Uncle was celebrating his deceased son's birthday wich i found out that episode was to the voice actor Uncle, In memory of Mako...

well not really
discovery channel is fantastic imo
history channel has just stolen some of their ideas. discovery's big show right now is "deadliest catch" which is a good reality show about alaskan crab fishermen. history channels version of that show is "ice road truckers" which is about truckers who drive over thin ice to deliver shit in alaska. dont know what that has to do with history but its an OK show
oh, I never took interest to those things
atleast not as much as watching documentaries about odd things anyway

but i will agree that they have a great animation/production team behind that cartoon

they are gonna start making it may 2009...
i read about that. it said people would all be excited to hear that. i'm not excited to hear shaymalan is directing it
(dont know much about directors) what movies shaymalan directed?
All the ones with twists.
Lady in the water, The Happening, Signs, Wide Awake, The Sixth Sense. Those are just a few.

I really enjoyed the story telling in the show. Though it had cliche's, it did not bothering me very much. I enjoyed most of the shows humor, mainly their attempt at subtle slaptick and I loved the animation. They really improved the animation in the season finale, though I did not enjoy the "ball" thing they did at the end. It did not seem natural.
Go korean child labor.
Also, boondocks is a great satirical "american" anime.
Outside of Boondocks' choice of language (which isn't always used in the best of ways) it's rather impressive too. There's something rather quite unique about Avatar. The duo of creators really made something incredibly powerful, that became mainstream ENOUGH, but didn't generate the same type of pop-culture tomfoolery by other such Japanese (or Chinese, a bit more this case) themed stories/series have made. In fact, dare I say the creators accomplished something many artists, animators or otherwise, seek to do for themselves. If anything, it rather quite shows that it IS possible to do in the first place. Also they proved that it's possible to entertain people of other age groups without the use of bloodstained battles, massive amounts of swears and sexual jokes, which seems to be a concept a lot of people simply can't accept.

fuckin lmao
Quote from: rtilyou do know that all the animation for avatar (and the boondocks, mind you), is done in korea, right?
I'm aware. I meant Chinese by the theme of the worlds they include on the planet, specifically the Earth Kingdom and a little bit in the Fire Nation, and I meant Japanese in the way the storytelling as a lot of Anime-style themes to it. If I'm not mistaken, Boondocks' later episodes had some involvement from Madhouse, which actually IS in Japan unless I'm wrong, but yes I'm aware the animation for it (and most series of that length) are animated in Korea.
to be honest all the nations in avatar are very much like different kinds of tribal earth peoples
earth kingdom looked like china, fire nation looked like japan, the water tribe looked like inuit and WHY THE FUCK AM I TALKING ABOUT THIS IN THIS OLD DEAD THREAD

Doesn't rather seem to be -that- old.
I assumed the Fire Nation was more like Japan, but I've been told it holds some Chinese influences as well. The "Air Nomads" are also along the same lines, so the world itself seems dominantly themed around Chinese mythology and the like - which I won't lie and say I know much about in the first place, 'tis merely an observation.
you brought this on yourself.

well what is your point then? all those networks do is ship our animation work overseas and leave us jobless. the boards are done here, then shipped, fucked up, and sent back. it's a horrible and backwards way of working and our directors are begging for some in-house work to be done. those shows do nothing for animators and artists' "self-achievement". the only reason avatar looks good is because we've been sending work to the koreans for so many years that they're becoming better than a lot of american animation studios who have been doomed to animate crappy TV commercials in the span of a week. that and the art directors probably trained them themselves so they wouldn't lose everything in translation. you know how many times the storyboard artists on the boondocks have to re-draw over the frames the koreans fucked up and send it all the way back? it's time consuming and pointless.
the best way to work is to have everyone under the same roof. that's what the WB crew did in the mid 20th century. they pumped out a cartoon every 2-3 weeks and nearly every one of them is a timeless classic.

Ooh, seems to be some misconception. My apologies.
My "point" I suppose as it were, is that it seems many aspiring since, Japanese animation has become so popular, often hope to make essentially what Avatar is - that being: an epic anime-style storyline with many characters and story arcs to it. With the way many animated programs in the US seem to be cut and dried up where 'tis either a "kids show" or an "adult show" to many imbecile producers, it's very near impossible for a show such as that to be produced over here by those who dream to make such a thing for themselves. However, this series proved that it IS possible to do so, and they did it without many elements that would only be seen IN an "adult" show, while still pushing the Nickelodeon barrier, as it were.
EDIT: Though, it seems the poster for Dream On would certainly describe the outcome most of those "dreamers" seem to reach in the end, wouldn't it?
As far as the animation process goes - well, you're certainly correct there. A good chum of mine was actually rather disgusted upon finding out that even things like Spongebob are animated mostly overseas. It's quite a shame that so many good animators are indeed put out of a job, or are given a rather silly job such as you mentioned, a commercial, or flash animated series for TV such as Collective's work and most of the programming on Adult Swim. It's just as much of a shame that "the industry" has come to be in such a condition, so I'm certainly hoping aspiring artists and animators will change that and evolve the industry to benefit that. Though, that's a whole 'nother subject in itself, Avatar aside, yes?

well i haven't seen much of avatar besides the last 3 episodes. but from what i did see, there was a lot of cheeseball dialogue and some sort of romantic story arc to it all that i noticed, and i thought it was poorly done. the only thing that i really thought was impressive were the production values. and all that was predominantly done in a country 4,000 miles away. so based on that knowledge, i would have to say it's not much of a groundbreaker. the only thing avatar proves is that we've trained a bunch of foreign animators really well.
also zekey enough with the image macros please

There ARE indeed a few points where the dialogue can leave me rolling my eyes just a tad, but usually nothing so horrible that it destroys the experience. Only one example I can remember in a scene involving Katara confronting her father about her confusion on...everything? I think? I'm not even sure, but it was -supposed- to be an emotional scene. Between the strange lines and suddenly Katara's VO lost all acting ability for that one scene.
The "romantic" story arcs are, to be honest, overblown by fandom. Yes, they're present in some capacity during the plotline, but not to the point where they become overbearing. The final season is where most of that comes into play, and the vast majority of it simply revolves around Aang and Katara. The rest of that aspect otherwise stays at just "I like you! You're cute!" type of playing around, or in some cases flat-out two characters get into a relationship and it stays that way.
Finally, regarding the animation studio. It's true, but as previously stated - that seems to be an overall industry issue more than anything else. On the side of production that actually takes place HERE however, I felt it was rather impressive by the creators from the conceptual aspects. Honestly it could be a novel or comic and I think it would still be a most interesting series in the same light.
Dirty Bill rather quite smells.
i dont like the way things look round these parts

well i'm not very familiar with avatar fandom and i still thought the scenes were stupid.
One thing I don't get. If the animators were Korean. Why would they get the Avatar "animation" staff (american) to learn the styles of martial arts to help them have a better understanding of how to animate the bending? I even herd commentary that the two makers of avatar animated a showcase episode.

they probably do a lot of keys along with the boards. but they don't inbetween, and they don't paint the frames. there's no way in hell they do that.

Correct. Looking back that's actually kind of disappointing, considering the animation quality of the pilot episode looks rather quite close to that of the series as it were while the Korean studio was doing the largest amount of gruntwork, but the pilot alone (despite it being the length of about half a normal episode) was essentially animated and finished BY the two creators and a few other close chums of theirs they befriended while working on shows such as King of the Hill, Family Guy and a small bit of Invader ZiM. If anything 'tis moot point that it very easily CAN be done over here, contrary to how many producers think.
it is easy to do it here. but it's cheaper to ship it overseas
Death to all korean animators.
One of my biggest fears about taking a future in animation is that the job market will shit on me.

More than likely. As previously mentioned, Spongebob Squarepants is as well. Anything as simplistic-looking, for lack of better term, as a regular cartoon, seems to be done this way because of, as rtil stated, cost effectiveness...at least in the eyes of the producers.
chowder is animated in china and flapjack is animated in korea. although thurop van orman, creator of flapjack, has expressed that he really wants some in-house animators to do some scenes. because the koreans ruin a lot of the potential humor
you Can't Fuck with K-STYLE 1337 PRO animators
It seems like I have no future in classical animation.
Maybe some story boarding or something

there's several problems with outsourcing:
1. cultural differences may confuse the animators and they won't get the joke or the scene
2. a lot of them speak broken or no english and the scenes get lost in translation
3. they're about 4,000 miles away - instead of across the room - from the producers and storyboard artists. so if they have questions, they can't ask them.
4. they have different drawing styles and don't have the in-house style, especially at the beginning of production.
5. they are typically not trained by the art directors and therefore have no past with whoever they're working with.
6. they're not vested in it because most animation is shoved under their doors and they inbetween it without even knowing what the show is about.
i could go on forever. outsourcing is flat out unhealthy for the animation industry, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron. or probably korean.
i'm pretty sure the koreans dont enjoy it eitherrrr

Sounds logical. At the very least it seems to be of better quality than many series created completely in flash and put on television. However, that can be simply from the difference in expectation from something you would watch online to something you would see broadcasted.
It's strange actually. I believe the use of voiceover for cartoons in Vancouver was made heavy during the 90's due to American producers taking a liking to the set rates Canadian actors were "bound to" (?). Now it seems to be the case for the animation itself where the mentality seems to be that they have enough funds to afford quality, but still want to be...well, perhaps "Cheap" isn't fitting, but in their minds maybe "cost-effective"? I'm sure there's a better way to describe it than how I'm thinking...
koreans can animate betta dan u guys!

of course that's why they do it. but when they do that, they're sacrificing the chance of having the cartoon be ten times more successful than it ever could have been. cartoons like spongebob were originally done in-house. now all their animation and coloring work is done overseas. it's still popular, but even a ten year old can tell the difference in quality between an episode from season 1 and season 6.
the best era of american cartoons was from the 30's to the 60's. everything was done here and animators were brought in and trained under mentors, and they sat
right next to them. they did inbetweens and that's how they learned, but the difference was is that they were surrounded by people doing the same things as them, and not at some studio 4,000 miles away with no clue in the world as to what they just did. animation was a very personal and direct medium then. everyone from the clean-up artists to the executives were brilliant artists and storytellers.
now, the executives are usually shmucks who couldn't give a crap about cartoons. and that's why most cartoons suck. the second you take control away from the artist, the second it goes from being about telling a story, to selling a product. and then all the heart gets sucked out of it.
a lot of overseas animation is good, but that's really besides the point. ask any producer of a cartoon that's animated overseas, and i'll bet at some point they've asked their bosses to have at least one person in-house to do animation.
Do you seek to change this problem in some way?
damn I wish I could work at a place that would let me smoke and drink codeine and shit right there
and have a gun and wacom pc shit
thats nice stuff man i want some of that stuff
Quote from: ILikeToSwoopThingsDo you seek to change this problem in some way?
if i could, i would. i'd like to get a job animating at cartoon network on something that isn't fosters. the more they prove to them that in-house work is more marketable (i.e. foster's), the more open they'll be to it.

Foster's Home is most definitely a GOOD example of a flash-based cartoon for broadcast. I didn't stop to think that it was done in-house, but that just goes to show McCracken's experience.
I'm not quite sure if every creator goes out of their way to do this, but from what I understand, the duo responsible for Avatar flew out to Korea for at least a month or so while looking for a studio to handle the "gruntwork" and inspected and questioned every detail and every animator that would be on board in order to ensure they would have what they wanted. Perhaps to them, that was the closest thing they could get, whereas Nickelodeon obviously wanted to go the overseas route and the two of them figured that being as hands-on as they could with what they were being forced with was the best thing they could do in that situation. There's a special feature on one of the DVDs sets centering completely on the animators in the korean studio. 'Tis been a while since I've watched it, but they definitely mentioned the two creators constantly with their specifications.
Actually, when I happened to visit Nickelodeon's HQ in New York City, I asked about what process for any of their series goes on there. Apparantly a few (emphasis on just a few) of their shows may be boarded there, but then production continues in California...which, then (99% of the time I'd assume) continues further overseas. They seem to be all over the place.

no they didnt thats a bloody lie
most cartoons are. i figured the avatar team hand-picked their animators and actually took the time to work with them. that is not done very often, but it makes a huge difference.
funny thing about fosters is that mccracken does not know how to use flash, he's never touched it. his designs are cleaned up in illustrator and turned into assets.
A few others I've spoken to have said that they were a tad lucky, as well, since the studio they eventually settled on wasn't incredibly well known, so they were able to jump in on a young and upcoming stable of animators and benefitted greatly in the process.
Never used it once? Actually that's not unheard of - I wouldn't be surprised if he and a few others consider Flash "below" using traditional tools.
yeah that was funny the first three hundred billion times
