Title: New Flash First Scene
Post by: YungJazz on July 18, 2008 10:26 PM

I gave simplifying another try, just want some critique on how my new more simplified style is working out at this stage. Make sure to say where I can actually improve while I'm planning the rest of the flick. No more ditching and restarting for me, but willing to make improvements where needed.

Ask no questions hear no lies.

that's actually pretty catchy good job little buddy

the old guy's voice is a little bit hard to understand and he talks to way too fast, kinda messes with the flow. But as usual great background and character design.

imo... i think this looks worse than your last one. it reminds me of life.1's super disjointed style. what made you drop the other one?

I was really aiming for more animation, less frame detail. This flash is an experiment, I have plenty of time to cover all basis and see what works for me, but for now I'll stick this one out. I think it'll do fine once I shake the anime-style laziness of animation and stop skimping out on the fBf.

Honestly, the movements are pretty shit. They don't make sense. No body language, no character to them. They're just drawings. Also the nose picking thing, anatomically impossible. Try picking your nose with your hand like that, just try it.  Your arm cannot turn the way that arm was turning.

Also, the old man coughing, what a mess. Very jerky, and a few inbetweens going into it, but nothing going out. It was just sad to look at, unfortunately.

Actually though, I like the designs and drawing approach better in this one, and the animation less. I feel like you're just screwing with us, because from an animation perspective this is really a step down in my view.

You're transitions and narrative flow was infinitely better, though.

Well then obviously there was something I needed to address as far as my animation and movements from the very beginning. If I can make it look good with no shading, it'll boost me up a bit when I return to using it again, so I'm already getting something out of this project. Still gonna go ahead and finish it, but I'll remember the advice

the spider-man font sucks

yeah i dunno i just felt like the last one was way stronger than this. the animation is jerky and the movements don't match the dialogue most of the time. i really think a big part of it is your reliance on the line tool, which pretty much kills any chance you have at relying on line consistency for style and flow, but it didn't look so bad in your last effort . i would suggest saying this dialogue to yourself and letting your body move naturally with the dialogue and see what you actually do. that or at least mess with the timing a little, things like the feet swinging back and forth were way too even. they should hit the backside of the bench fast, then ease in slowly as they make their way out.

yeah the spider man font is fucken gay but

im wondering do you study animation? I mean its a delicate and difficult science to master and it's not like you are a college student or anything but, its like mrat said its just drawings with no purpose. Im not saying im some master of animation either just that you seem to not really plan out how to make people move its like you are just going straight into it. Do you do any keyframes?

I like the straight-on method for more experimental animation but no matter how good you are using that method is going to look a little... off...

And the nothing but keyframes method is going to make it look mechanical

im not really wording this well but I almost know what im talking about lmao

I always get the most colorful complaints here. K well I'll try to work on it for the other 4 minutes of the flash. As for them being drawings with no purpose, I'm not really so sure how I can fix that. I'm drawing the frames then drawing in between using the onion-skin. I can try to make it look cleaner for the rest, but like I said, I'm making this one for the purpose of improving movement so I'm not looking back.

With no purpose, what we mean is that shit is moving in no relation to what's going on. The movements are just... movements. They don't have weight, they don't enhance our understanding. Like the legs kicking, I realize they're kicking because the basic motion is there sure, but it doesn't really look like kicking. They swing without weight or direction. The timing is flat.

Look at Metropolis Circuit, for instance. Watch Violet kick her legs, they don't just go back and forth, they are affected by gravity and ease in an out. Ok, so it's not the best example, she's a different character in a different position from a different angle, but it should help give you an idea.

Another thing to remember is that people have unique body language. No two people really move the same way. They distribute their mass differently when performing different actions. Take this into consideration when animating. Think of your characters not as drawings and frames, but as real people. They need a sort of fullness, things that don't necessarily show up on the surface, but by knowing them will help govern the things they do and the way they do them.

but thats whats going to help you get better not some faggots going "XD he piked hiz nose lolz! 10/10 5/5"
and don't think of them as complaints think of them as general observations or something

or do whatever the hell you want i dont care

I know, man. If I didn't want alternative criticism I would've quit posting my work here a long time ago. You guys give me a different angle to look at sometimes.

i dunno i liked it. it's obviously a lot better than anything i can draw. don't use the spider-man font because everyone recognizes it. also his hand looks really wonky at one point, after he picks his nose. some of the timing could be tweaked to give it a MUCH better flow.

It doesn't really have much movement. The timing and spacing is very off in this.

Also please use different sounds, those sounds are overused in so many flashes, mainly stick fights too.

Thanks Billy, I'll keep timing in mind for the rest of the flash. As for sound effects, I'm not quite sure where I can find better ones and too broke to buy pro ones, but if you have any suggestions for what I can do, I'm all ears.

K, I'll quit being lazy and give that a try. I do have Adobe soundboard, that might help.
