directions (open to change or interpretation):
character animators must:
- post a picture of their character for approval before animating
- use animation that at least partially mimics the real world and a nighttime urban environment
- time the animation to the song and try to match its mood
- at the end of their part, include a transition from the real world to the inside of the character's mind.
- work together with their mind animator and animators of other parts to keep things somewhat consistent.
mind animators must:
- use animation that is experimental, i.e. not directly mimicking the real world, to visually interpret the thoughts of the characters
- time the animation to the song and try to match its mood
- at the end of their part, include a transition from inside of the character's mind to the real world
- work together with their character animator and animators of other parts to keep things somewhat consistent
animators of both must:
- download and use both the character and mind MP3s in their part
- follow all other directions above

basically this will be a joint effort. parts will transition from one to the other smoothly. mind parts must be at least somewhat based on the character parts they are paired with. everyone can start animating, but leave a few seconds blank at the beginning so you can animate a transition there later

we are saving the opening and closing sequences for last. we'll all pitch in on them, we'll have some huge fuckin creature with a tiny piece of all of our characters in one big greusome blob

the next person can cut to a different environment and character entirely, or they can just tween the character from the part before them off screen and pan towards their character

10 seconds could be a lot of work depending on how much one person wants to get into it. i mean let's say it's 10 seconds all on 2's, that's 120 frames of keying, inbetweening, coloring and some bg's for good measure. in the summer it would be easy to do but during school maybe not. either way this collab will take a long time to complete but it's been done before so it's not impossible. whoever is in charge of it however needs to constantly keep the whip cracking and not burnout halfway through.

thats true a good 10 seconds is hard if you make it hard. i also dont crack the whip on people enough sometimes, thats why dt400 dragged on so long.
im thinkin one solution is that after each person completes their part, theyve got to send it to me AND the person they want to animate after them. that way we won't have an FLA with a bunch of work on it that gets passed on to someone who flakes out and grinds the collab to a halt, like what happened with aea2 and the spy sheriff collab. if i had the FLA and that happened, we could just move on to another different animator

the thing is this sort of a collab idea allows for some parts that could be well over 10 seconds. i know my part was gonna be longer than 10. and 2 seconds isnt enough to show much of anything except one still frame of one character. unless people just want to insert freelance FBF work into the mind sequences of other people's parts

i just listened to the song all the way through, and its giving me a lot of ideas for how this collab will play out. obviously it will take a long time and will be passed around to a ton of different people, but its definitely doable. i will totally make more than one part for it if we are running short.

i also think we should agree on an ending right now so we have a better idea of how our characters fit into the broader storyline before we animate them. how should it end? i think something involving all of the characters shown one after the other, or maybe one character with a little part of it drawn by everyone like CDM suggested. or it could be something more concrete, like a disastrous event that catches all the characters attentions?

yes we should agree on an ending and no offense to CDM because that might be nice for a collaborative drawing or something but???? I guess it could work but it just seems kind of odd.

ah interesting idea i like the replay button thing we could do something neat with that. we've also got plenty of time to refine an ending like that and make it have an impact. like right before it shows the guy, there should be some sort of buildup with all the previous characters turnin and lookin at him in the center of the town or somethin along those lines?

so if we want to do that, ill draw something like a single ear on the last frame. the next person will then add a tiny bit to that ear before they pass it to the next person and so on until we've got a face

btw if you guys dont feel like animating a camera zoom into a characters heads, you can do other stuff too. like their head can split open and their brain pop out, then the experimental stuff will be shown on the brain like a projector or somethin. or the top of their head can have a door or something that opens to show their inner thoughts. just some other thoughts of how to get from reality to their minds

for the whole idea of the character being seen in the middle of the city, I think that when your collab peice ends the character should turn to the guy in the middle and it should zoom past him and go on to the next character who then once reaching the endof his piece, views the guy etc etc
that way hes kinda being built up

i think you're on to something

maybe not the character dying but something like

the character IS this fuckin all seeing eye that can enter anyone else's mind and see their perspective or life story or brain waves or whatever because it has a little part of every character's artist in it, if that makes sense.

so like at the beginning that wierd sounding ambient shit will be the creature sitting on a pedestal or something with all of the other characters staring at it. when the music starts going crazy, we'll show a rapid montage of all the characters. then the music starts and the flash tag begins

i was talking with newshape (who is in, btw   ) and he was saying we should do it in reverse. i think its an interesting idea but probably too hard for most of us. i like the way hes thinking about this though, there should be some sort of big reveal at the end. involving this crazy drawing we're all gonna be makin haha

for instance, we'll replay that same rapid montage of all of the characters that was shown at the beginning, then as we're showing it zoom out of the CREATURE'S head and show it on the pedestal again to end the flash

i like this idea a lot too cuz the drawing of the creature could end up looking hideously abstract and horrifying knowing the group of people we're working with. guaranteed, a random nipple or ballsack will be hanging off of this thing lmfao. all the characters could look shocked and disgusted by the thing in the first part, without realizing that it represents their own capability for creativity or something.

in some way i think this collab will end up showing people that there is no normalcy, artist or not we all have crazy ideas that are only considered "bad" because of social taboos and such.

i think it should just be on a pedestal like its on display in a museum or art show. and we should only show it at the beginning and end. our characters will look at it with disgust at first, but by the end after all the parts have been shown, it will become obvious that the creature has a little part of each character in it. we could do that the way i just suggested, or we could do something different like we all draw a tiny puzzle piece that originates in our part and that all comes together with everyone else's puzzle piece to form the creature at the end

you can use any character you want, just post it here for approval. i mean obviously, we're all gonna hate you if you draw wade fulp or sonic the hedgehog or something stupid like that. but if you use an original character, no problem

ok so everything is pretty much set in stone now guys. the plot will be largely up to the rest of you, but we've got a solid beginning and end i think. ive begun animating my part.

when im done, ill put the detailed directions for all the artists on the first frame of the FLA. ill also add blank keyframes that act as good stopping points in the music.

more on the creature: do you guys think it should be made up of body parts from every other character and/or the weird shit in their minds? i think that would be nice. that way each scene animated could sort of end with a puzzle piece, then at the end all of the puzzle pieces would come together to form the creature. i also think at least a few people should try to animate a short FBF loop on the creature. for instance, an eye blinking, a bleeding cut, gaping mouth, etc.

because it is neat looking to have crayon animation

dont worry guys not all of you have to think of a character. a few people will animate the real world looking characters and the pans into their brains, and a few others can animate only mind sequences if they like. in the mind sequences, people with insect legs would be more than appropriate. its totally cool too if an animator wants to do both the real and mind sequences.

and grinace by abstract interpretation i mean make something that doesn't realistically mimic anything in reality. something that could only be envisioned in your mind. something that could only be brought to life with animation. get what im saying?

i will listen to the song and time it out to see where new characters could be introduced. then we'll decide how many characters there are and everyone can choose whether they want to do character animation, mind animation, or both

i finished marking off the different sections of the song. ive got it divided up into the opening sequence, character sequences, mind sequences, and closing sequence. there are 12 characters and 12 mind sequences in all.
considering ALL of us will be pitching in on the opening and closing sequences, thats a total of 24 parts. not bad, 20 people signed up so only 4 of us will need to do both a character and mind sequence.

its really amazing actually, there are perfect little 5-15 second intervals throughout the song. do you guys think i should just ditch the flash tag / anijam idea entirely and make this a conventional collab? you know, split up the song and let people choose their parts?

i think thats definitely what we should do. then we can listen to the individual parts and decide what the mood of the music is, and base our characters on that. im listening to it right now, there are parts where it goes from soothing to scary very abruptly.

this could make for some reeeally interesting animation material. for instance you show a preschool teacher teaching a class that looks all nice, then when it zooms into her head and the music changes moods, you show some dark secret of hers like she killed someone or something

However, there should still be some flash passing and collaboration between the person doing the character sequence and the person doing the corresponding mind sequence, simply so the two parts fit well together.

I call a mind sequence, preferably one between 0:17 and 1:45. Also, I only have MX 2004, so If we're pairing up, I need someone with 8 or below.

i don't know what you mean by "compensate with religion", but i do enjoy biting satire, or as you call it, "putting people down". i think you misunderstand, though. satire simply points out farce with irony. your warped perspective on it only comes from the fact that people have made fun of you your entire life - i mean let's face it, you make a great target. failures are one of many great pieces of material for satire. so in that sense, you're not a failure, but in fact an inspiration for people like me. you should be very proud of yourself!

and i'm not sure what you're getting at with what you want me to admit as to what i've failed at, but you can go ahead and throw me some suggestions. i can think of one thing, though. i have failed at becoming a socially retarded recluse who has wet dreams of fast food mascots. guess i'll knock that off my list of goals !!

I've made like what, no more than seven posts in here? Like that's REALLY going to affect anyone's confidence here. I started one minor flame war which I don't exactly recall much about, so in that case, you're just exaggerating with this and putting me down.

I don't stalk you, I don't know you that well, and if anything I don't devote anymore than an hour's worth of time in trying to start arguments with you. And I have a good reason to start these arguments, because you guys certainly deserve it.

You also keep telling me to get help. I am receiving some help right now, and I don't tell you anything on AIM. Nothing at all. I have to agree with Anigen with this, you are stuck-up.
