chakushin ari "one missed call" - the original "one missed call" by director takashi miike. this film was recently turned into a horrible american remake

sympathy for mr. vengeance/lady vengeance/oldboy - not really horror films, but horrific in their own ways. a trilogy on revenge by korean director chan-wook park. sympathy for mr. vengeance is the saddest movie i have ever seen

the three extremes - three short films by takashi miike, chan-wook park and fruit chan

gin gwai "the eye" - good horror by hong kong directors the pang brothers. also recently turned into a horrible american remake

haute tension (high tension) - french horror/slasher

kairo "pulse" - creepy japanese horror .  awful american counterpart is a few years old and i hope you never saw it, it's a disgrace compared to this movie

soseiji "gemini" - weird but awesome story about a man who takes over another's after he unknowingly stole his past love. in fact every movie by this director (shinya tsukamoto) is pretty strange but he has a real knack for creeping you out. he is probably most famous for his adrenaline-rush psycho thriller cyberpunk movie "tetsuo", that sparked off a lot of strange japanese films

shutter - excellent thai horror by banjong pisanthanakun. very recently remade into a terrible american horror.

haze - another creepy and dark film by tsukamoto. the description says it best: "A man wakes up to find himself locked in a tiny, cramped concrete room, in which he can barely move. He doesn't remember why he is there and where he came from. He has a terrible stomach injury and is slowly bleeding to death."

here are some other foreign films that aren't horror but you should see anyway:

riri shushu no subete "All about Lily Chou-Chou" - i can't really describe this movie to you, it follows the lives of some troubled japanese students looking for meaning in their life. visually and story wise it's really beautiful. one of my favorite movies of all time

yôkai daisensô "the great yokai war" - not really a horror movie but directed by one of the japanese horror masters takashi miike. a really imaginative and fun film

xiang gang zhi zao "Made in Hong Kong" - HK gangster film about a guys' life that spirals out of control. kind of a drama/thriller, but a good movie. REALLY hard to find though

mou gaan dou "infernal affairs" 1/2/3 - infernal affairs is the hong kong crime trilogy that inspired the award-winning american film internal affairs. the 2nd one is the best imo

electric dragon 80.000V - short film about a guy that has electricity-fueled fighting powers and a pet lizard shop. probably the most amazingly ridiculous movie i've ever seen

bullet ballet - a movie that's really about the power of a weapon, a guy becomes obsessed with revenge and rage after his wife's apparent suicide by gun. guns are near impossible to purchase in japan as civilian firearms are illegal. he gets involved in a dangerous gang and his life takes a very different course. really good movie

battle royale - this japanese film i think is based off the comics and is actually very good. a story about survival and the true nature of humans

that's all i can think of for now

BR2 is pretty much the same movie and isn't as good but still worth it if you like the first. 3 isn't

@rtil its based off a book not comics. there is a comic i think but it came out after the movies

the host isnt really a horror film
its just a really good monster movie. its really good and sad though :(
but it has giant fish with legs

horror films you should see:

and even though they arent really scary just INDESCRIBABLY VIOLENT, I suggest seeing the Guinea Pig series of horror films.
The easiest one to find is "Flower of Flesh and Blood" but there's a good handful more.

Quote from: rtilshutter - excellent thai horror by banjong pisanthanakun. very recently remade into a terrible american horror.

I'm surprised that you watched this. Banjong also made another horror film called "Alone" which is about conjoined twins. If you enjoy Shutter, you'll definitely like this.

Since people mentioned most of the good foreign horror movies I'll say which one to avoid...

Ju-On (The Grudge) and The Ring. I never liked them and the western adaptations are even worse.

wait Shutter got remade?

wtf?

when?

normally bland remakes of asian horror films get thousands of commercials on tv

look up the films of dario argento
alot of it borders on the genres of supernatural horror and giallo

i saw that in his imdb listing. i'll check it out since you recommended it

i thought ju-on was kind of disappointing but the western one is worse. however, the american ring is actually my favorite horror movie. strange, since i usually hate american remakes of foreign horror. although the ring 2 was horrid. ironic, because they let the original japanese director do that one. i think that was a mistake, a lot of stuff probably got lost in translation as he was trying to direct a completely foreign cast and crew

i firmly believe the worst asian horror film and the worst remake of an asian horror film both go to "Dark Water"

oh hey i\\\'m a single mom with a daughter
oh hey i\\\'ve moved into a SPOOOKY apartment complex
oh look a stain on the ceiling, i think i will ignore it
oh hey there\\\'s a big leaky water holding thing on the roof
oh hey a zombie came out of the stain on the ceiling
THE END

also

i agree with whoever mentioned dario argento

mrat told me he\\\'s making a new movie but it sounds kinda ass

i highly recommend "Cemetery Man" with Rupert Everett

Giallo (yellow) is his new movie. It isn't a horror flick though, its one of them psychological thrillers and it stars Adrian Brody. It's kinda a true story by not really. His movies are great, but the synopsis of this one sounds bland.

A great horror flick is Audition.
