Title: Marvel superheroes
Post by: PsyhetheFox on June 25, 2008 03:31 PM
I talked to my cousin yeserday and she said they they were going to make a movie were all the superheroes come together ( similar to the game Marvel:ultimate alliance) in 3 to 4 years. That and the people who make those movies bought out the sets who made movies like miami vice so they can make more movies.

They plan to realease spiderman 4, X-Men 4, Captain America and more.

I just hope they make some of Luke Cage, Ms.Marvel, Deadpool, Thor if they didn't make it, and black panther

i think the Japanese horror fad a few years ago (ring, grudge...) was the end of good horror movies. i haven't seen something that honestly scarred me and wasn't just a creepy gore-fest prolly since Aliens.

as for superhero movies yea they gotta stop, they fucked up spider-man and really after the Dark Knight they don't really need a third batman. writers and directors just need to put their thinking-caps on and make something decent

All Horror movies are gorefests anyway. Alien is barely a horror movie. It's mostly just so sci-fi adventure flick. It's Godly, but sure isn't scary.

The best horror movies are the ones that don't take themselves seriously, where they don't just try to scare you shitless, and instead just tell a story where scary shit happened.

Nothing has been scary since The Cabinet of Dr. Caligiari anyway.

What horror movie what you seen that isn't gorey? Horror, not thriller. Sure thay're not all Hostel, but loads of blood has always been a key element.

Also I love The Thing, super awesome. Wasn't scary though.

I think horror movies shouldnt use 3D programmed monsters but just puppets and robots and stop motion etc.
because the lighting is much more realistic with puppets and they just have allot more detail etc.

i mean lets be fuckin honest this is really fucking great:

Yes he does. Well, in Hellboy he does them with Mike Mignola.

But he draws his entire movie in his sketchbook first pretty much.

Go watch The Devil's Backbone. It's a ghost story and has no monsters, but it has the scariest "jump" moment I've ever experience. The rest of the movie is more ominous than scary.

Still it's so fucking good, possibly better than Pan's Labyrinth.

the ring had some gross stuff in it, but no gore

shutter (the original)

bullet ballet

the orphanage

1408 wasn't very gory (or very good, but nonetheless an example)

dumplings was a disgusting concept but not gory

the original 'the eye' was not gory. never saw the american one so i don't know what it's like

pulse (the original) .... not gory

i could go on, but uh anyway i don't know what makes you think all horror films are automatically slasher/gore flicks. plenty of great horror movies that are missing that element
Title: Marvel superheroes
Post by: psi43 on June 25, 2008 10:41 PM
mrat, you're talking about slasher movies, not horror movies.
Title: Marvel superheroes
Post by: MRat on June 25, 2008 11:39 PM
Sorry... I didn't just mean slasher movies though.

Most of those movies, the old ones, are not what I would consider horror. Dracula, White Zombie, Frankenstein, all those old "Horror" movies aren't gory either, but there is nothing horrifying about them. There is no element of really horror, just suspense, tension, even sometimes sudden fear, but that terror never lasts any real length.

You look at the horror movies being produced now, and the entire purpose is to horrify you, which is why they're horror movies.

Most of the movies you listed are just tension builders, or thrillers meant to fuck with you, but I can't identify and element of horror.

Whatever maybe the genre label is horror, who cares but those aren't the types of movies I was thinking of I'm wrong blah blah

It was, but I think the intent was the horrify you, whether it did or not.

anyways we were just thinking of different terms. I miscommunicated.

Back to Marvel Superheroes.

I like comic book movies where they do shit it make it a full movie, instead of just fanservice. Rarely happens, and when they do, they usually kill the source material.

I liked Iron Man, Spider-Man 2, Batman Begins, Dick Tracy (Warren Beatty one), Batman Returns, and a couple others. The recent Punisher was neat. I don't really like most Marvel Comics though, so the movies appeal to me even less. I didn't like any of the X-Men movies.

My favourite comic movie is Hellboy.

I like movies like Donnie Darko but i dont know what genre it comes under.

Donnie Darko is a science fiction movie.

Tobey Maguire was probably the worst choice for Peter Parker possible. Parker was never a huge faggot, just a smart awkward guy, probably like most of us here. And of course the movies are corny, Spider-Man is a corny as shit comic. Nothing wrong with that.

Still I despise the first and third ones.

i think tobey maguire isn't the worst choice, hes down there but he does some of the scenes well, or maybe i'm thinking of the scenes where you can't see his face...
anyone see the new Simon Pegg flick about him running or something? looked kinda bad for a comedy
also i just saw Be Kind Rewind and enjoyed it, very silly
Title: Marvel superheroes
Post by: MRat on June 26, 2008 02:28 AM
Run Fatboy Run is pretty great. It's barely a comedy. It's sort of romantic, but mostly it's good because Simon Pegg is so fantastic at everything he does. I also really like Hank Azaria.

It's not really a genre film.

I love Be Kind Rewind, but the last 10 minutes or so felt like they were entirely in slow motion. I could have done without seeing the whole city outside like that. Pushed it too far, imo. I fucking loved how cheesy that bit where Jack Black is magnetized was though.

spiderman 2 was good that's it

in fact i haven't seen one since spiderman 2

i am actually excited for the batman movie coming out next month though

the joker doesn't look like a goof in facepaint, he looks like a freaking maniac
Title: Marvel superheroes
Post by: MRat on June 26, 2008 03:32 AM

The Joker has always been an absolute fuckjob in the comics. Right from issue one, which was back when Batman killed people and used guns. Purely psychotic.

Nolan who directed The Dark Knight refers with fondness to The Joker as being like the shark in Jaws. Not so much a human villain, as a force of destruction, like a hurricane that tears through Gotham.

An early review too said similar things. He doesn't have an backstory, doesn't have human emotions, isn't in it for cash. He wants to watch the world burn, nothing else.

Which I think is a really refreshing approach to the character. The last guy like that was Michael Meyers in the original Hallowen, and even he eventually was revealed to be more man than monster.

from a scientific standpoint, it makes no sense
but neither does a man made of orange rocks, a woman made of insects, or a purple giant man in a costume who eats planets

personally i prefer the biological webshooters
peter was smart....but having built his own webshooters is something a genius would have to build. and they never really have shown parker to be a genius. smart? yes. genius? eh

also i dont think of 1408 as a horror film. it didnt scare me. it was a great thrilling paranormal action film though
i put it in the same tier as men in black, ghostbusters, and hellboy

Post by: MRat on June 26, 2008 02:16 PM
I don't really find his books scary either. I find them immersive, and he is one of the very few horror writers who created full, convincing characters with real depth. Usually horror characters are created simply for the purpose of furthering the plot, they're not real people.

I love Misery, Dolores Claiborne, Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist very much from a film maker's point of view. The Shining should probably be on there, but as an adaption is blew. Still brilliant as a stand-alone picture, but it doesn't even try to actually BE The Shining.

But the insanity in some of the other adaptions are things I love too. IT with Tim Curry, that terrible very long The Stand TV movie, thinner even. I like most of them.

The problem with adapting Stephen King is the same problem with adaption H.P. Lovecraft. The horror is so rooted in how slowly realizations are made, and rely on insanity being a very real influence, yet film makers think "FURR I MAKEA SAW!"

the spider man that used the web shooting device was ben reiley a clone of the orignal spiderman peter parker whom actually had the ability to just shoot the shit from his writsts.

Also Captain America is my favorite superhero hands down and if anybody has shit to say they can fly south because they are probably just assuming he was a tool for propaganda.

Drawn by the god of contrast Jack Kirby, this was the first issue of the series and the first appearance of the character and it was published before America even entered world war 2 or really knew anything about what was going on in germany and was actually quite controversial for the time.  Joe Simon his creator however was your typical badass that read the newspaper and made his own assessment that Hitler was just some stupid cunt that needed a punch in the face.  He wasnt some fucking commissioned superhero paid for by the government to get people to buy war bonds he was a damn cartoon character like any other.  All that you see from this era (including the horribly racist bugs bunny and daffy duck talkies) were just reflections of how the creators felt.  In fact most of the public didn't give half a shit about the war until pearl harbor.

Throughout the series the character of Steve Rogers is often questioning the ethics of his assigned duties and near the end of his superhero career actually starts to become disgusted with the lies his government has been subjecting civilians to.  He is your Joe everyman, the true rebel, given a gift of extraordinary power and ultimately using it to spite the very flag he stands for.

SO FUCK THE HATERS

I  saw it on E! television there was a huge list of superhero movies that are actually greenlighted and in production and ant-man was one of the more biazrre ones I heard. which doesn't mean it will make it all the way but still yeah

Also after actually reading some of this thread i'll try to give a quick summation of thoughts:
.horror movies SHOULDN'T scare you, i mean holy shit what kind of pussy would be scared from a movie aside from children. Don't take that to mean that I hate horror flicks or that I think they are bad or anything, I just think that they are more about... suspense and a list of other adjectives that I don't care to drudge up.
.spider-man and his web shooting yeah well theres a shit ton of debate back and forth on that even from those really old geeks that devote their lives to comic books but Stan Lee says spidey shoots them out of his fucking wrists, Peter Parker that is, so I go with the biological "he shoots them out of his wrists" answer, even though redmongoose cleared this up already I thought I'd add my 2 cents.

ok

oh also personally speaking I don't hate superhero movies as much as pretty much everyone here does, I mean I don't like seeing the same shit being produced all the time but hasn't hollywood basically always been this way? except maybe when films very first started being produced, and even then only because ANYTHING would be new on a new invention? I mean honestly.

then again i don't actually pay to go to any new movies in the theatres really... Unless it's something that peaks my interest which is usually an animated film I go see at the Kent or something.
