Title: The Happening
Post by: FG_SPace on June 15, 2008 12:54 AM
So i just saw the happening and am i'm so happy. i was really afraid that after Lady in the water he'd be stuck in suck mode but this proved to be one of my favorite movies. while i can see a lot of people picking on the premise of it but really it was legitimately scary. it has a definite protect the environment agenda but honestly it is very entertaining on multiple levels. its An Inconvenient Truth (sorta) meets Romaro's The Crazies and i definitely suggest seeing it.

i really disagree with the critics on that site. while i will admit to being a little bit of a M. Night-fanboy cause hes a local and the movies take place in places that i live this movie is a great turn around from the flop of Lady in the Water. Its not on par with Sixth Sense or Unbreakable it has some real good scares and is refreshing look at horror instead of more Saw and Hostel gross gore flicks. this does has its fair share of blood though. people in the theater were bitching about it though so maybe i'm the only one who really liked it

Yea and Yahoo gave it a C- for both users and critics.

His plot twists will never surpass or match up to the sixth sense...but then again that was easy to figure out too :\

I'm still gonna see it  the preview made me cringe and the guy does know how to make each shot pretty damn amazing

If you want to watch the happening, save yourself an hour and a half, and watch Hans' 20 short film he made a couple years ago. It's the exact same thing.

Evil Dead has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

That's alot more goofy than a real horror movie, but The Happening was a huge fucking B-Movie too.

that was really lame

the reason i liked m nights is because i found the concept really interesting (which im not going to say)

in this its just about a parasite that makes you depressed and then you kill yourself

plus the acting in this is even worse than m night's movie

It doesn't make you depressed, it just makes you kill yourself. Sure the acting was worse, but when watching both, I'd rather save myself the extra time from the Happening in the end.

Both of them were lame. I thought M. Night's concept was twice as lame as the parasite cause though.

Title: The Happening
Post by: FG_SPace on June 16, 2008 04:16 AM
people who think the concept is lame are people who are sick of hearing the preachings of global warming and save the whales.
as for his movies being predictable...aren't all movies? Isn't it that all stories are the same since there are about 12 of em? if you pay any attention to the plot and characters you know how it ends its about the how they get there which is the entertainment. and thats what i think is good about m night's movies the middle is entertaining and while the endings aren't perfect they don't fall flat on their asses (cept Lady in the water)
Title: The Happening
Post by: MRat on June 16, 2008 06:09 AM
His movies are generally predictable, and the village is like identical to the book Running out of Time. The period they're acting out in the village is a different tiem, and what keeps them in the village is different, but yeah those are irrelevant really anyway.

And I am tired of hearing global warming and save the wales shit. Do I want the planet dead? No. Do I recycle? Yes. I'm not retarded stop ranting and raving about the environment. And it's not the message that was lame so much as the

MUTHERUCKING SPOILERS

fact that it's plants. PLANTS. The hole in my foot from stepping on a nail yesterday has better ideas than that. If he pushed the cheese factor of the whole film, then yeah, it would have worked for me, but as a serious thriller or horror? Hell naw.

Remember the Ruins?
Title: The Happening
Post by: FG_SPace on June 16, 2008 01:57 PM
didn't see the ruins and i thank god every day that i don't. same with house of wax.
what i like is there isn't certainty if its the plants, that even after all that happened there were still skeptics just like with global warming and i respect your opinion and that fact that your sick of hearing it, so am i and i go to a school where we get told about it every five minutes but there are still skeptics and i think the medium of film is a good vessel for middle america and i guess M Night missed the mark a little but its a good idea[/textwall]

ok i saw this tonight and it was really bad. horrible script, horrible acting, didn't care about the the protagonists, the antagonists were plants/wind noises, and they were not scary.

things i learned from this movie:

because he made horror films differently than everyone else.....kinda.

he definitely has a style to his films.

but without a good plot/script they dont work.
he's not one of those directors who can polish a turd.
Title: The Happening
Post by: Rina-chan on June 17, 2008 10:23 AM
I found it interesting, but I was disappointed at the fact that it didn't scare me at all. And the whole plant thing kind of killed it---I was excited about the concept of people being compelled to kill themselves but that took a backseat to all the environmental messages. It had some parts that could have been creepy if we were given more insight---for instance, why was that little girl suddenly talking about calculus? I know that the toxins were supposed to make people confused and stop making sense but I wanted to see more of what was going on there

...Oh actually. I was creeped out by that crazy old lady.
Title: The Happening
Post by: billy on June 17, 2008 10:29 AM
i would see it if the toxins made the people kill other people rather than themselves

or if there was some reason for the main characters to be running away even though they're obviously immune

Well they clearly didn't kill themselves. SURE SOUNDS LIKE IMMUNE!

Also I thought Signs was great. Sixth Sense was super predictable, the first scene where Bruce Willis is sitting with the mom, I knew he was dead, because she didn't talk to him and he was clearly in conversation mode, like he had just said something to her. Still Sixth Sense was nice because it was very character driven the and pacing was great.

My favourite of his films is Unbreakable, though.
Title: The Happening
Post by: FG_SPace on June 17, 2008 09:50 PM
they were NOT immune. shocking really. they explained that the plants only release the toxin in populated areas and that number of population was growing smaller and smaller until it was one: the lady. the people were inside (apparently a safe zone from air?[/plothole]) and when they left it had crested just as they thought it would. kind of a cop out yea but its not like they were super people.

Unbreakable is prolly the best. I liked Signs but after seeing it a few times its really hard to sit through.
