in the ng world, there seems to be a lot of debate on which path in the industry is the wisest to take, etc. I've heard a lot of opinions from people as to where they want to go. for example, some people want to go join CN and animate cartoons there, however, other people feel that it would be a miserable, controlled job with weak pay, and would opt for a different path.
so where do you want to go
animating will always be a hobby for me so online recognition is as far as my dreams span really.
Where do I want to go? As a dream I want to eventually open my own studio and move into directing where I can make feature films.
get some kind of grant or studio so i can make freetown what i've dreamed of it to be . it will cost millions of dollars i'm sure
Quote from: rtilget some kind of grant or studio so i can make freetown what i've dreamed of it to be . it will cost millions of dollars i'm sure
this is pretty interesting to me actually. i always pegged you as a guy who just wanted any job in the animation world and would take going over to cn and just working for them
uh
no i hate working under people
though i will probably have to do that for some time until i can accomplish starting my own series with real backing
post spam until i get the guts to make a good flash
unlike afrostump
release something
I want tO GO TO FRIENDLY'S
back in time
WOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH
i wanna go to xanadu
if i ever get really good then ill consider a career in art but its just a hobby for now
my plan from here on is to make my best possible animations in college then use those animations to get jobs at various studios. working under someone or with someone else's art doesn't bother me at all, but there are tons of possibilities beyond that.
the alumni list for the ucla animation program is staggering, there are tons and tons of success stories. they actually tell you that the most negative aspect of the program is the low graduation rate... not because students can't handle it, but because students get hired out of the program before they get their masters. one guy got hired to work on lord of the rings while making his thesis film. he went to new zealand for a few years, then came back and finished his thesis which got nominated for an academy award. another guy made his thesis film, and when speilberg and zemeckis saw it, they made it into Monster House. countless other alumni went on to be directors of animation for TV shows and features. my current animation teacher has worked basically everywhere in the industry, directing episodes of the simpsons, rocko's modern life, recess, king of the hill, the critic, and a bunch more. and he started out the exact way im starting.
so i dunno should be interesting! we should be glad we've already got a decent network of animators and artists with this site alone
Quote from: rtilget some kind of grant or studio so i can make freetown what i've dreamed of it to be . it will cost millions of dollars i'm sure
I could lend you money, you know I've got enough.
Im quite happy working a regular job just to fund my cartoons in my spare time, i dont like the idea of working under somebody else, mainly because i already do that in advertising and i absolutely hate it. So yeh, some kind of job that has nothing to do with computers would be nice, just so i can come home and feel good about getting back on the PC and doing some animation. After working in flash for 8 hours at work the last thing i feel like doing is coming home to do work on my own projects. I think i will probably just stick to small time film festivals and stuff for the internet.
learn to animate properly and win some money in contests and things. I don't really have an interest in animating as a career; I'd rather work with technology. (programmer, most likely)
i dont even know anymore
Pretty much see an idea of mine come to life, nothing like crabarms but the
best of what I can think of and do.
Sure I like the idea of a guy with crab like arms but there could be more to that.
You also might say that the plot of shot gun wedding was done on just practicing
experimenting with tweens and seeing how it would appear once finished.
I learned quite a bit from it, yet I have more to work on and thats something to keep me going.
Quote from: Zekeyi dont even know anymore
YOU TOLD ME YOU WANTED TO START SMELLY BUTTS STUDIOS WITH ME!
Ill join your studio if you let me do whatever i like and pay me for it
well my first goal is to get into UCLA and to graduate with a bachelors degree in animation/media arts
then my goal is to get 2 years of industry experience through internships, commissions, etc.
After I get 2 years of industry experience I can start applying to studios.
then after i finally get a nice secure $25 an hour Studio Job I'll start saving and investing because you cant count on a studio keeping you hired forever they like to randomly fire people.
So after I save up enough money to invest in a studio I would open my own studio.
^- my grand scheme to making money off of stupid toons.
room with danny at ucla
Any old place for arts then as I become an intern for someone, I steal their work and become rich.
I WANT TO BE A MAGMAR
MAGGGGGGGGGGMMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRR
i dont really know what kind of career i could build for myself but...
i wanna majorly do 4 things:
1) do my "pretentious" experimental drawing thing to try to build an underground/mainstream reputation for myself
2) write books/novels
3) compose classical/jazz music
4) have some sort of career in the field of psychology
and teaching could be a possibility since i do get along with kids
for some reason the idea of ant doing a novel appeals to me
Lmao if I ever became an artist I guess as far as I'm concerned it will just be my hobby. I already have another career path planned.

im in 11th and I live in San Diego. I'll be graduated by april or may of next year and then I'll take the summer off I guess and start up at Community College sometime at the end of the summer.
Also I can get into UCLA just fine, there's a TAG program in CA (Transfered Admission Guaranteed or some shit), so all I have to do is get my 50 General Ed credits or whatever done at a Community College and it's guaranteed that every UC school has to accept me. California is snazzy ehh. But yeah any tips about anything you have are still welcome bro!!

well for one if you wanna get a bachelors degree in animation you have to apply to the ucla film school your sophomore year of college. there's as many as 3000 transfer students, and only 15 of them get accepted to the film school. in addition, there are usually about 100 applicants who apply from within UCLA, and only 15 of them get accepted as well.
since im already a UCLA undergraduate, my chances are better than a transfer's. i took two years of general education classes and basically hung around the animation lab long enough that i became friends with everyone there including the teachers. now im applying to the undergraduate film program, and if i get accepted, i will major in film with an emphasis on animation.
the head teacher and head manager of the animation school wrote me letters of recommendation after seeing that etch a sketch shit. despite the slim odds, im hoping ill get in based on that. i also know two people who got accepted as undergraduates last year too so i know its possible. but its extreeemely tough, as you can tell by the odds. for me this is the scary part: even if you're one of the thirty finalists, they will eliminate half of you after an interview. i may get nervous during the interview and fuck everything up because apparently they fuckin grill you :[
before you decide on going to a city college, i suggest applying to some UC schools next year just to see if you get in. that includes UCLA, but also san diego, santa barbara (my hometown) and santa cruz. those are the schools you'll probably have the most fun at
well then why dont I just kill myself if ill never get a degree in animation. But on a less pessimistic note, how can I go straight to UCLA since I'll never afford that? I don't want to be in debt till im dead and I won't have enough money to move to L.A. and get an apartment and shit when im fresh out of high school, thats why the whole "go to community college while you live with mom rent-free and save up money to move to L.A. in 2 years" sounded swell.
I was thinking CalARTS would be great as well but thats probably just as hard to get into as ucla. life is too hard and stressful for my tastes reading what you just wrote to me makes me want to cry.
I wanted to Major in Media Arts does that make any difference at all or anything? Or do I still have to try to get into Film School and get laughed at like "AHAHAHA FUCK YOU AND YOUR POOR FAMILY YOULL NEVER MAKE IT IN THE BIZ KID YOURE A FAILURE GET THE FUCK OUT" because really thats about all that would happen I guess.
don't really know though I hear from a lot of people that what you major in and shit isn't important or that you shouldnt worry too much about college or something but that doesnt seem to make sense to me if i want to be good at animation i should go to a good school so i can get a good jobb andnasfUFUCK the world:(
lmfao im sorry i didnt mean to discourage ya! you've got plenty of time to prepare for next year when you'll be applyin
my family is poor as shit though and i AM in debt for life. i just took out a 10000 dollar loan this year. thats pretty much true for everyone in a university so community college really isnt a bad idea. if you're lookin for a great city college, santa barbara city college is pretty damn great.
now here's another option that might be better for you. have you considered san francisco state? they have a nice film school similar to UCLA's with a good animation school. i got accepted there and got a full ride scholarship. i turned it down to go to UCLA. i may be kicking myself for that one in the future if i dont get accepted to the UCLA film school
ooh and as for media arts, you have to apply to that as an incoming freshman. so next year you would apply for the DESMA (design and media arts) major along with applying to the general university. the chances are still pretty slim there, but trust me theyre a lot better for freshmen then they are for anyone else. the number of spots open to non-freshman applying to DESMA each year is however many people drop out.
and YES what your friend said is absolutely right. college education does not matter in terms of getting an animation job. it is ALL about your portfolio. nothing else.
ive never considered any school aside from Art Institue of SD (decided against it), and CalARTS (decided against it), and then UCLA which I thought would be great because of that guaranteed admission thing. I thought that meant that all I had to do was work hard and in 4 years time I'd have a degree but im not even gonna bother if the odds are like 15 in 1000 or whatever you said.
Why did SFS offer you a full scholarship? Is it because you're jewish? Would I be eligible for a full ride scholarship? I would take that in a heartbeat. I didn't have my eyes set on UCLA because it was UCLA, I only had that in mind because of that guaranteed transfer thing which i guess isnt so guaranteed. I'm actually glad you bent my world over and fucked it viciously in the ass, it's better I learn that shit now and not halfway through a degree program.
But really I'm quite interested in this "Full-ride scholarship" that you turned down. SF is farther away but I could save up or something I guess not really. I could maybe talk my mom into letting me live with her an extra year before going to college or something if i got a full-ride fucking scholarship im sure shed agree. And even if i didnt get the scholarship i dont know. SFS sounds better already if it isnt a 15 in 1000 chance ill get my fucking degree at all.
Thats really scary to think you could have wasted all that money and time just to show up and not be able to get your degree.
Zekey just recommended a college in France but that would require a lot more moving-money and having to learn a new language so I don't know.
yeah transferring into the UCLA film school is not the way to do it. but you could use that free transfer thing to get into UCLA and minor in film or something. thats what i'll do if i get rejected.
SFSU gave me a full ride scholarship because i applied for it. only 25 people out of 300 applicants got the full ride. it was extremely hard to turn down, but i gave it up anyways. if i dont get into UCLA film school i guess im a fuckin idiot. SFSU would be a nice place to transfer even without a full ride because its cheaper than the UCs and the film school is easier to get into. some animators apparently even go straight from SFSU to pixar after graduating.
calarts is really expensive and selective i wouldnt go there. same with USC. UCSD has some interesting new media stuff that i looked into when touring the campus, you could definitely go there with the free transfer thing
im thinking about digipen since it covers most of the shit i want to end up doing
and look at rtil
my mom works at UCSD but im not sure if i get any discounts from that cuz shes just the parking supervisor
you probably saw a bunch of signs she put up around the campus lmfao
I'll definitely look into SFSU though that sounds very cool, even without the full ride.
Thanks for helpin us noobys out with your wisdom and experience of teh art schools teh lawlerskates and shit piefFUC ((((:
when I grow up I want to become a lumberjack annex seal clubber
I'm getting a Bachelor's of Art (Animation) from Sheridan College, but my acceptance is conditional that I complete a year of pre-animation art fundamentals with a certain grade first.
So I have 4 years of college ahead of me, and I'll graduate with a gay piece of paper that means nothing to show for it.
Luckily, I've been working and saving money since I was 10 years old and I have an academic scholarship, so I'll graduate debt free.
From there I'm going to DFUC{HSDVG
It would be fun if I actually got to work with what I love, which is animating and drawing. But I really don't expect it, It's more of a hobby and a way for me to express my ideas.
I'll be filthy rich with 18, I could create an animation studio and hire all of you. I would do so if I wouldn't know exactly that f0d, rtil, zekey and bug would pretty much be the only ones working!!

i dont know if i'll get a studio of my own or whatever, but if all goes as planned ill have some seriously fantastic connections in hollywood. i already know a ton of people at UCLA who will probably be huge in the entertainment industry a few years down the line. i also know some INCREDIBLE animators. WAY better than any of the animators on this forum, and that's saying something.
yeh if i ever make it big, i will try to get you guys jobs helping with TV shows and whatnot. especially zekey, get yo ass out of florida nathan
yeah i hope someone i know makes it big and likes me enough to give me a chance.
but you gotta have the ability too so I'll just try to get really good in the meantime.
I plan on getting slightly decent first before I do anything big.
I started putting together a demo reel so I could take commissions and get some more cash together, and realized I suck terribly.

man theres a ton of different types of people there. every single race from every different country. there's even an iraqi kid who used to live in baghdad during the war. he's one of the best artists i've ever seen in my life. he makes the most intricate characters. he drew out the skeleton and muscular structure of this one monster he created it was astonishingly accurate and detailed for an imaginary creature
and he showed me this drawing of a city he made when he was 10 yrs old it looks like simcity in pencil picture perfect most detailed thing you can imagine
i swear if i werent using the etch a sketch, id be crying my ass off. everyone in this class is so much better than me at drawing i will NEVER in a MILLION YEARS of practice EVER be that good. NEVER. these fuckers are so talented, its downright discouraging. etchasketch is really the only thing i can do better than them lmao

lmfao god thats disgusting
ive seen that exhibit before though its neat
Every year I get bugged to go to comic con (san diego) and every year I say "Maybe next year."
I hope NEXT year I'll be there actually promoting some comics.
I have no idea where i would go as an artist. I have no further plans actually. I guess id keep submitting stuffs as a hobby, until i get hired by some company what the fuck ever. Maybe do some cartoony stuffs/caricature for a magazine, and simply showcase at conventions and stuff. If i get the hang of flash, id showcase that on conventions too. No big plans for me. I just want some recognition.
i would only go to the comic con when i am older and have a nice suit
my brother got in for free cuz he wore a nice suit and he just walked right in and noone bugged him for a ticket or somethin.
im not gonna pay that much money to sit around bored all day, like i normally do, except i would be surrounded by fat ugly narutards.
i think i would lose all of my self esteem if i actually went to comic con
i would go just to meet up with all the internet people if it was still in san diego this year
F
Comic Con is still in San Diego this year people. There is a New York Comic Con, and there is a San Diego Comic Con.
well if internet people want to go to comic con to meet up then why buy tickets? Why not just meet up at some place in the parking lot and then go do fun shit* instead of wasting time and money at that gayfest.

In all actuality, I haven't delved to deep in animation yet, so comics are seeming ( at this point) to be my main point of interest.

Eh, you got plenty of time to get better at drawing for people, my man. It's all about practice and patience.
And I dno. Dreamworks isn't exactly the best example, I think, because everything in it is run by paperwork, not artists. still I get what you're saying.
Finally, I love film too. I had to work magic and win my camera, then some faggot shot it in the Amsterdam sewage system and so I resolved never to get a camera again. But I did once I got a steady job.

Wait, I JUST realized you said somebody shot it. LOL Was it your first time getting shot at? It's always scary as hell, but funny later.
When I went to Europe, this little kid came up to me and told me to make him a sandwich.

I was speechless. Upon retrospect it's funny but seriously, what scares me is how did he know I came from America if I look hispanic???

it was my second time being shot at. the first time was at the rifle range in cadets. My partner shot me in the foot because he's the biggest faggot ever to exist. Bigger than WAC. It just barely hit it really, only took skin of the top, and it really didnt hurt at all, but I was pissed all the same.
And it wasn't even really scary with the Dutch guy. He was clealry high and it'd take a miracle for him to hit me. I ran at him yelling and he took off.
But yes, it's a good hilarious memory.

really if you get to the point in life where the only way you can have fun is to get drunk/high your life is pretty much worthless. anyway, the reason why people meet up at the SD comic-con is because it's about a square mile worth of animation and art paraphernalia and collectibles for you and your friends to check out. you can make lots of connections there and see lots of stuff you'll probably never see again. it's hardly a "gayfest" and it sounds like you've never been to one if you think it's no fun. if you are an animator or artist, it's highly likely you'll find something there you will enjoy and be glad you went there for.

Yep. And like I said. Theoretically I'll have two issues of one comic, and another issue of a second comic cut and printed by then, and so Hans an I are planning on opening and ODD Comics both and whoring our shit to the max. And of course, I just like to meet the people I talk to online.
I'd love to meet Rtil and banter with him about the downfall of the animation industry. I'd like to meet Mindchamber and refuse to shake his hand, because apparently he thinks that's cool or something. I want to me Tom so he knows a face for the guy who keeps PMing him asking for Front Page posting abilities back.
I'd like to chill with Luis again too. He and I destroyed Frangelico and got drunk and I cooked chicken at like 3AM last time and that was a blast. I got sprayed with hot oil from the frying pan, and looking back at that, I smile.
lmaoo
if you guys set up a booth i'm sure you already know it's expensive unless you have connections .. make sure you know some people to stir up some interest in the booth so that you guys dont' end up sitting there the entire con and not sell a thing. because really it's just like the anime cons, if nobody knows who you are, and you're not selling fanart, you're pretty much wasting your time.

Well we're going to try and make connections. And I'm going to put together a ridiculous animated trailer that will maybe generate buzz online when I whore it on every single website ever.
Also, I'm pretty damn good at talking people into buy shit they don't even want. I should be able to just stop people and mindfuck them into submission and bring them to our booth.
And God yes it's expensive. Luckily Hans has all sorts of money.

I was all: " I'm not your maid, little boy."
his reponse: " Fuck you, american."
I was speechless. Upon retrospect it's funny but seriously, what scares me is how did he know I came from America if I look hispanic???
yeh europe is one gigantic country, just like africa
Quote from: rtilbecause really it's just like the anime cons, if nobody knows who you are, and you're not selling fanart, you're pretty much wasting your time.
Or if you aren't a porn star who's at the con for (?) reasons
I'm going to shoot for either SCAD Atlanta, or an arts institutes college. Full Sail is also an option. I've heard terrible things about some of Full Sail's departments, but great things about others.
After getting a Bachelors.... uh.. that's as far as I've thought through so far. I guess I'd like to start a studio eventually, but I don't see that realistically happening. I'll probably end up working underpaid for some large animation studio.

anyway I went to some shit anime convention a few years ago when I was a fat goth weeaboo shitter and I bought about $75 of cheap Naruto shit. the lesson here is that conventions are horrible, although I thought it was funny that half of the anime things I went to ("okay here's some overrated anime shit on DVD played on a cheap projector") almost didn't work because the projectors/computers/DVDs fucked up.
I think there was a 4chan panel also but I didn't have any idea what 4chan was then.
