but the problem is this: the audience is less accepting than most other places. i think you guys misinterpret a lot of our hatred as directed towards the site itself when really its more the viewers who turn us off. they are very selective in what they watch. my two most popular flashes on NG are WadeFulp Internet Badass, a flash about newgrounds, and Ultimate Videogame Battle, a flash about videogames. i've made way higher quality flashes than those before, but none of them ever get noticed as much. in order to earn recognition, i had to conform to the tastes of the audience, and even stoop to flaming them with the Ultimate Videogame Battle. when you put so much work into making things that are somewhat worthwhile and the audience spits in your face as thanks, it is discouraging. it makes you say "fuck it, ill just submit shit to piss them off then. thats way more fun than doing all this work and in return getting heavily criticized or ignored." so maybe i brought it on myself with my earlier negative reactionary types of flashes, but so what? shouldn't a good flash get noticed anyways?

so yeah i guess im just trying to give you a peak into our side of things. sure i bitch a lot, but not about "stupid shit." and if you think i waste all of my time bitching and never make anything, you don't know me. despite my efforts on dailytoons, the majority of my work is done outside of NG because i earn a lot more recognition for it. i worked freelance making flash intros like those used in dailytoons for websites, only i got paid 20 bucks an hour to do it. i worked hard making traditional and stop motion animated shorts at the UCLA film school animation workshop. and now i'm working on animating a TV show pilot in flash.

i hope to submit more quality work to NG in the future. i plan on making an experimental flash series, similar to dailytoons but higher quality, minus the daily. and minus the stupid crew shit. the audience may not enjoy it, since they never seem to enjoy anything outside of their videogame niche. but i will still make it, and you are welcome to join us if you still want to

What is the difference between Parody and Satire? Many a young student of the humorous arts has confused or even equated the two, but this does both a disservice by oversimplifying them. They are different fruits of the same branch, both delicious in their own right, but neither exactly the same as the other.

To begin- what is parody? I could quote Websters, but would that old trick really service the discussion? Still, I suppose, in this case, where the offender started this mess with a quote from that bastard offspring of reference texts, wikipedia, an old trick may be needed. So let's look at the definition as Webster's  defines it:

Let's break that apart, shall we? Most of its meaning should be apparent, but examining tiny details are necessary when dealing with profound ignorance.

"For comic effect" - Parody can be seen as an homage, of sorts, a tribute to the original by pointing out the subtle peculiarities of the creative. By exaggerating these eccentricities, one may illicit laughter from his audience, but it does not necessarily connote ridicule.

"or in ridicule" - This is where overenthusiastic (or lazy) students tend to get caught up. But note this - while a parody may ridicule the flaws of a given work, it never explicitly states them. Rather, a true parody points those flaws out by exaggerating them.

"a feeble or ridiculous imitation" - this sums it up perfectly. Parody is an IMITATION, and does not step outside those bounds. What commentary it offers is neither outright stated nor immediately discernible. It may not even make a comment, preferring rather to mine for rich, sweet, laughter from the rich mines of funny that are inherent in a ludicrous situation. Parody is, above all else, about making the audience laugh. Making them laugh is secondary.

Parody is not always at the expense of the subject matter. Note this. It can be, but it isn't always. Parody is always an imitation. ALWAYS. That is what parody is. If you can remember that, you'll be fine. Parody is imitation. No exceptions.

Accepting that, let's look at satire.

I would go with a dictionary definition, but dictionaries tend to not give good example for what it is. Webster's for example says:

This certainly gives you the gist of it, but you may be inclined to believe that satire cannot outright mock a certain individual. This definition is, of course, accurate, but it doesn't give the reader an accurate PICTURE of what satire really is.

Works of satire use art to ridicule. Political figures, celebrities, institutions, abstract ideas, it doesn't matter. Whatever the target is, rather than directly parodying (read: "imitating") it, satire puts a context around it in which it can be mocked. A cartoon with a literal political boxing match, where Obama and Hilary bruise each other up, only for the winner to have to take on McCain, tired and bloodied? That's satire. A movie where bureaucracy has lead to a world where a man has to live in a cemetery after accidentally being declared legally dead? That's satire. A story about superadvanced aliens who come to earth, only to ask for directions as far away from here as possible? Shitty-ass satire. But that's beside the point.

Satire is not a mere imitation, it is commentary, a context in which a subject can be held up to derision. Can it be funny? Yes, but that's not the most important part. Satire is about criticizing something or someone by creating a situation where its flaws can be highlighted. Exaggeration can be used, but a point to be made is that it's not just an exaggeration.

So which is which? Indeed, it can be confusing sometimes.

A movie called "eXposed: an eXplanation for why eXpelled is a dumb fucking movie", a piece by piece deconstruction of all the bullshit in Ben Stein's newest movie, and probably a few testimonials from holocaust survivors who don't agree with him about the whole "darwinists caused the holocaust" thing.

It'd probably suck, full of Michael Moore-inspired "humor," but it'd be an accurate satire because it puts a context around Stein's movie and derides the fuck out of it.

A movie called "Kicked Out: The lie of a heliocentric solar system" which exposes the travesty of several scientists from Omaha U who were kicked out by the CONSPIRACY OF ZION-UH I MEAN BIG SCIENCE for their cutting-edge theories about how the earth is flat and the sun revolves around it. It would feature a droning Armenian narrator who formally worked for Nixon, who explains to us why Coperni-cists are responsible for the Armenian genocide, which he would cry about, thus guilting us into siding with him.

It'd probably be funnier than the first one, but its not really as insightful, poking fun of faults it assumes we are already aware of. Parody, an imitation of the original. It may make people more aware of the flaws in the original, but the primary purpose is to make us laugh.

Can you see the difference? Once again - Parody; imitation, Satire; a context through which derision can be delivered, like so many FedEx boxes of diarrhea. Telling the difference is the first step to true happiness. Or something like that.

I hope this has been enlightening, and now I must go, to teach experimental English in the Cornell Subbasement. Away!

wow you couldn't have got a more wrong impression about that whole ordeal. honestly, i had no idea people were nominating me in that thread until about 8 pages in. i didnt do any bitching of my own AT ALL. other SS members were the ones bitching.
i actually felt like shit after that thread. not because of the nominations, it was nice that so many people wanted me to get an award. and i was just joking about smashing the trophy, of course.

the top 50 is good for the most part, but you can't deny that the flashes there now are simply not as good as some of the flashes that used to be there. all of the old classic flashes would peak at around 4.2, and now theyve been pushed out of the top 50 by this new generation of users that overrates everything videogame or newgrounds related into the 4.6 range.

anyways if i submitted my best material i could probably be in the top 50 myself. i just have no desire to please NG's target audience anymore. i know what works on NG and what doesn't work, and i simply do not want to conform to what works. consider my two flashes that have actually earned significant attention, WadeFulp Internet Badass and Ultimate Videogame Battle. that pretty much says it all right there. in order to make a popular flash, i had to leach off the popularity of something else that is more popular with NG users. in the 2 years since i made those, ive made way higher quality material that few besides SS members have noticed

videogames are relevant.  its a sad fact, but thats what people like. Tom started the site doing parodies on games celebrities and movies. its whats relevant and you cant get mad at it.

point me to any animator and I can show you what what style they use and what was relevent to that style.  Bug and Zek like to kick it oldschool. and those old school toons were all about parodies of stars, imitations of vaudeville slapstick.. basically what was relevant. and Im sure there where hecklers back then that got tired of it like you did,

people dont seem to realize this about the SS. when we were spamming the portal, we were actually working on getting better at the same time. killing two birds with one stone. i got better at animating from making dailytoons than i did taking 4 years of traditional animation classes, 2 advanced flash classes, and 3 ucla animation workshop classes. no lie.

These characters are used with Basic Latin. All of the characters from 160 to 255 are present in Microsoft's WGL4 character set and in the ANSI character set. The ANSI and MacRoman character sets assign printable characters to many of the controls (128-159), and these characters are likely to appear in the table below if you are using Microsoft Windows or Mac OS. Characters 160-163, 165, 167-172, 174-177, 180-184, 186, 187, 191-207, 209-214, 216-220, 223-239, 241-252 and 255 provide Unicode equivalents for some of the characters in Apple's MacRoman character set. Characters 169, 172, 174, 177, 215 and 247 provide Unicode equivalents for some of the characters in Monotype's Symbol font.

people dont seem to realize this about the SS. when we were spamming the portal, we were actually working on getting better at the same time. killing two birds with one stone. i got better at animating from making dailytoons than i did taking 4 years of traditional animation classes, 2 advanced flash classes, and 3 ucla animation workshop classes. no lie.

dude you'll get there,  also  doing SS gags still fills that need of assurance and confidence that those who make videogame parodies get. sure it may feel like a cheap way to get alil confidence but if you like the material  and that material happens to be popular, then so what,
you are still learning and growing and you will eventually tire of it and search for new inspiration.
its how all artist grow.
