Title: Some New Shyat
Post by: YungJazz on March 29, 2008 12:53 AM
I actually tried drawing a whole photoshop pic or two, looks anime as hell unfortunately. I still like em tho

Some concept work for my new project, I simplified the shading so I can maximize frame-by-frame animation. They aren't final, I think I could work on making em a bit darker and grittier to the feel I want, but I s'pose it's a start for a drop in detail

character designs are not bad. when you work in photoshop, tone down the dodge and burn tools.. try picking out actual colors instead.

see I knew it! Zekey wouldn't believe me but I said that you look like you do some sort of Disney Anime art style. It's not bad though, and you're really good with flash so. I hope your next night gun turns out really sick and has a lot more FBF in it.

Yeah, I take a little from both I guess. Thanks man, and it will. I'm sick of having my stuff standing still, my animations need 'animation' and life.

I can't remember Sinister comparing his work to yours, why are you doing it?

It's his opinion and by acting like that you are no better than the people who 'put up the racial walls'.

It's ok, I like it. It'd be very hard to animate them though.

well yungjazz sinister is really ignorant and by default berates anything he doesn't like or understand, so it's just best to ignore him because all he's going to do is generalize and troll your artwork

i mean yes you could do a lot to improve and it may not be the most original style, but we all start somewhere. and no one has the right to say whether it's wrong or right to work off an already developed style. it can be used as a crutch, or it can be used as a catalyst into eventually developing your own style. we are all influenced by something. there's lots of great anime out there, a lot of people just refuse to see it. it has its strengths and weaknesses just like any other style.

and it's complete stupidity and backwards logic to say something like 'anime sucks'. if you grew up in a world where the two styles you loved and hated were reversed, you'd only be saying the exact opposite of what you're saying now. anime is not just a style, it's part of a culture and a way of telling stories, just like the western, european and indian styles.

thanks a lot for posting that rtil now I won't have to tell my brother about all these intelligent and talented animators on this forum that for some reason don't like anime as much as other styles. Because he's obviously a huge wapanese anime loving nut. Although I guess just looking at your artwork and it's obvious to see that you must like anime because it shows through in your art, as if you used it as a catalyst like you were talking about.

Anyway, I think YungJazz is all-around a good flash-creator. I'm not keen on his character FBF but that's a hard task, im not keen on the story or voice acting but thats just personal grievances, I like the effects on his pre-loaders and it is built up nicely, good scene transitions and composition. However, at this point, it would take a long ass time for him to not be a total unfunny faggot and to get any love from me (and probably other people here) for his ideas. Although I have to hand it to him, he sure stands by his convictions.

I guess I kind of wish he had a pro-spam ideology because most people who don't give a fuck about shitty flash spam movies tend to have a more laid back sense of humor and what have you but maybe im just making connections that don't exist. Like crabarms said, I don't know anything these are just my opinions

i can see people easily having problems with anime. first, there's a huge cultural wall. second, they abuse held stills, monologues, and fanservice. but i could name off just as many problems with western cartoon conventions as i could with anime

Rtil's style does tend to look more like anime inspired then most other persons here.
Title: Some New Shyat
Post by: MRat on March 31, 2008 05:59 AM
I'll say this. All those characters you posted look like the same person with different little decals and features pasted haphazardly on to them. Try varying the shapes you use to build you characters. Especially the heads, those heads are nearly identical.

A important thing about a character is you should always be able to distinguish who they are by their silhouette alone. Right now, if I saw silhouettes of those characters, aside from the chicks boobs, I wouldn't be able to tell who was who.

Another thing is that your linework is very stiff with lots of straight edges and stuff. This can be used to create a strong style, like Samurai Jack's artwork, but the lines need direction to become fluid like that. Yours do not have that liquid way of flowing. I wish I could offer more insight into how to make your lines fluid, but I simply don't work with straight lines and edges much. I prefer the more organic curves approach where lots of negative space is used.

Anyway, it's a hell of alot better than most garbage I see floating around, and there is nothing wrong in my books with being influenced by anime at all.

Edit: With regards to Rtil being anime influenced. I'd agree, but to me it only shows through in the themes and content he has, the the way he draws heads. His anatomy, weight distribution, and proportions are all a very unique style. His poses, if you want to push it, have a bit of an anime taste, but it's pretty light.

Meh...I just started trying to draw anime recently. I just think its pretty. I'm more into the shoujo aspect of it. I still kinda stink at it but I like it. Prior to that I was just drawing well...errr. Scary stuff.... Yep I like anime. I think its a welcome change of pace for me.  *braces for the flame*

those arent my biggest qualms with anime

for me, the main problem is the anime genre itself seems to defeat the purpose of animation. no matter what culture you're from, animation is the art form with the most creative possibilities. literally anything an animator can conceive can be brought to life. there are limitless possibilities.

so why limit yourself in a limitless medium? why make animations with the same style and conventions that everyone else uses when you could be using your own personal style? that, to me, takes away from the wonder of animation. you can do whatever you want, you aren't bound by anything. including the conventions of your genre.

i dunno why im tellin you this since your style isnt even actually anime and you already know exactly wat im talkin about!

if you're talking about stiffer character models, that's a cultural thing. the japanese people are very streamlined and strict - they stay on-model consistently and are afraid to deviate from it because, well, culturally speaking, they're not a devious people.

but as far as anime as an animation medium being a limited technique, i'd definitely have to disagree with you. many japanese directors have been ten thousand times more ambitious than western cartoons as of late.

i'm sure you've heard of the films paprika, or spirited away. do these films defeat the purpose of animation? for me, they define everything great about animation. vastly colorful and fully imagined worlds with things we will never see in this life. amazing animation, great character designs, and solid yet fluid movement.

perhaps you've been watching the wrong animes, and there are plenty of wrong ones to be watching. but i do not think anime limits an animator. the only thing that limits an animator is his imagination, not his style.

Thanks for the advice, ya'll. I'm definately listening to what you guys have to say. I know my style has a ways to go, and I'm working on it. I guess really, there's no such thing as not having any roots in other art forms, but I do want to have a tradmark style that people will recognize as my own. Up to this point, my animation has been really stiff, and I've opted to trade still prettyness for slick animation, so that should be a change of pace. I'm still pretty new to animation, but I'm getting there. Just make sure that if there's anything at all you see that can be improved, you tell me, and I'll try to work on it (If it's reasonable  ).

I second that.  Personally I enjoy anime...If I ever get good at the style and get tired at it I'll move on to something different.  I still haven't ditched my old style either, why?  Its like acquiring more tools in one's artistic tool belt.  And I urge Yungjazz not to ditch anime altogether either.  He might want to use it later on. One never knows when one might need a screwdriver or a hammer - keep um around. ^_~

Jazz, here's a thought. It's surprising to alot of people, though I think it's pretty obvious. Don't try for style. Go and learn art. Principles, fundamentals. Learn how it is, and style will find you on it's own. Your style, at this stage in your development really shouldn't be your focus, in my opinion.

ive seen spirited away and princess mononoke and others like those. i definitely enjoyed them. amazingly detailed and well done, they take full advantage of the medium of both cinema and animation. i thought that director did a tremendous job.

but i was more referring to amateurs using anime as their animation style. since most artists aren't as amazingly talented as the people who do the really good animes like spirited away, they will start off making stiff, uninspired anime thats more like the dragonball Z stuff we see on TV. they only do it because anime is so "cool" in the art world right now.

i guess its just the style itself that gets to me. the big eyes, tiny nose, strange expressions. anime humor bugs me more than anything else. "desu kawaiii XD." that humor, and the type of people that enjoy that humor, reaaally get on my nerves. otakus are annoying as shit, and you have to be around them constantly when you're trying to break into the animation industry. although i hear they're a whole lot worse in japan than the wapanese wannabes we get here.
Title: Some New Shyat
Post by: YungJazz on March 31, 2008 10:23 PM
I don't think there's anything worse than wannabes lol...

Yea, I did anime really because I did comics and still art first. But I know animation needs a lot more than just drawings. I really like some anime, that really grimy Cowboy Bebop/ Afro Samurai and even that Hayao Mizazaki shit is raw to me. I love it (When it's good) But I also love the devotion to movement and life in some western works, so I want to take the good in both with future works. I'm hoping my trademark with form itself as time goes on.

those kinds of animators always need to start with simple shapes to learn weight and movement.. starting with something like anime is a recipe for disaster. and we have witnessed that many a time on newgrounds and many other places

Ever since I got pay TV I got a new program called Animax, anime 24/7. 2 or 3 (.hack, hellsing and tenjo tenge or something, which isn't too good) of the about 30 animes are ok to good. The others are utter shit.
