Title: 5 Best Ghibli films
Post by: Halcion on February 29, 2008 06:48 PM
1. Princess Mononoke
2. Spirited Away
3. My Neighbour Totoro
4. Kiki's Delivery Service
5. Howl's Moving castle

[attachment=825:catbus2.jpg]

The most recent "Tales from Earthsea" wasnt that good, it lacked the fine detail the ghibli films go into and the character development wasnt all too good either, it also swayed away from Earthsea's original concept.

was that movie with the raccoons that were able to transform to humans a Ghibli film, too? It was pretty gay.

Yes, that one was good. Yet, i didnt want to list everyone of them down, so i stuck to 5. Ive had the whole ghibli collection since earthsea came out on dvd, yet i still find my self watching the same ones. nausica'A' (strange a) had great character (insect) design and the landscaping of the fungus areas (i forget the names of the places) were incredibly in depth and detailed, to the point were i think miyazaki is a perfectionist in all forms of the films.

I've seen that raccoon movie, mononoke, that other movie with the main character being "Chihiro" or something and I think that was it. None of them really interested me.

same with kiki

@ rtil: it was brilliant but far less of that film was hand-drawn, the computer generated parts sometimes look out of place.
@ zekey: kiki's is just a fun movie, especially the nerdy-looking guy she stalks.
@ both: the soundtrack to spirited away as well as the characters all being related to japanese folk-lore, the emotions displayed by certain spirits were great, as well as the fact that spirits would want to visit a bath house (a popular destination in japan) so it really gave it something else in terms of animation and emotional-display. The names of the characters had to stay the same though (im not sure, i only seen the dub once) as theyre pretty important to the plot. (though its much easier for japanese people to understand than others).

this is what i was trying to avoid, i think rtil would agree with me if i say i begin to write paragraphs on what i thought of the film. but yes grave of the fireflies was good, i liked the war films less than the fantasy ones, even though the fantasy ones were a bit more brutal.

i wasn't aware there was any 3d in spirited away. either way, it was a better film. ghibli does tend to have some stiffness in some of their characters, though. they're so afraid of going off model that ffaces are sometimes too stiff. but they make up for it with crazy characters like the river spirit when it's full of gunk. that was insane

the predominant style of a studio. notice how warner brothers, disney and cartoon network are all recognizable by their work. it's called the 'house style' because they all (traditionally) work under the same roof and draw in the same style as the directors and people that create the art.

Crazy I really liked Princess Mononoke. I really liked Howl's Moving Castle, and of course Spirited Away. That one with the raccoon balls was Pom Poko and I thought it was pretty silly but had a... kind of nice story I suppose. Good moral lesson yeah.

And now for something completely off-topic, I really love Samurai Champloo. I think it's really great

You might like Samurai Champloo, the character Mugen makes some really crazy movements that I think are animated beautifully, and I also really like the juxtaposition between ancient Japan and Modern Hip Hop. It sounds weird I suppose but it is done amazingly well, which is no surprise considering it was directed by the man who did Cowboy Bebop.

I'd call it more "serene" than boring, like the parts in Spirited Away when Chihiro watches the rainclouds pass by (before trying out a bit of the medicine ball) and when she rides the train. They remind me very much of Asian landscape paintings- very simple and peaceful.

I like Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service.

And Samurai Champloo is quite a cool anime indeed. You don't get to see ancient Japan and Hip Hop together everyday.

I wasnt so much commenting on that sort of thing, which i am actually quite fond of. But rather the way every human character has the exact same face, occasionally someone might have a mustache... occasionally, but aside from that there is very little to tell people apart.

it's hard to give characters life, especially in Anime. Which is why I understand why a groupd of animators such as yourselves likes simple cartoons over Anime sometimes, because the cartoons put some life and expression into the characters.

know what im saying?

Yeah, I get ya. The anime characters have an image already set for them ( thanks to precedents, fangirls, and other factors)
I like to read manga over watching anime however, because usually the manga has more of an expression range ( well out of all the ones I've compared )

I also like simple cartoons because theyre simple. Sometimes anime and manga try to put alot of detail to make it good. But if they cross the line between good detail and too much detail, then it just gets plain confusing or forced.

you can also get a lot of the lacking emotion through with a good backscore, the music helps a lot.

Have you guys ever seen Tokyo Godfathers? It's a story about 3 hobos who find an abandoned baby in a dumpster on christmas eve.
It's a fucking fantastic comedy film. One of those rare adult animated films that's funny without being vulgar. It feels almost like a Coen brothers movie.

One of the cool things about it though, is that the characters all show very human facial expressions.

It's by satoshi kon, the same bloke who gave us paprika, millenium actress, paranoia agent, and a very frightening film called Perfect Blue.
Also did the first film in the "Memories" film trilogy which I really need to get on dvd. It's at the blockbuster I work at, but I know its eventually going to get scratched and stop working and then our anime section will suck even more balls.
It really does suck too. Other than tokyo godfathers, memories, ghibli films, and a small smattering of excel saga, we have nothing but really cheap ecchi/hentai smut.
We've started putting LEGO BIONICLE dvd's there to try to make it seem less perverse.

Yeah ZSL I saw Tokyo Godfathers, my brother has shown me a lot of stuff by Satoshi Kon after I told him how much I fucking adored "Paprika"

Good point on the expressiveness of the characters, it never even crossed my mind to bring that film up.

I liked ghost in the shell 2: innocence, it was a massive improvement, though Major (the female-bot) wasnt in it much at all. (it continues from GitS 1).
