Title: Backalleys collab?
Post by: crimson66 on January 8, 2008 11:32 PM
Wouldn't it be interesting to have a random music based Backalleys collab, with someone starting a theme, then the next person adding onto it with their own twist or continuation?
There have been some great collabs on newgrounds, and i think it would be interesting to get a collab going.

I suggest that rtil picks the starting music and theme/animation though.

(I suggest techno music, but i assume rtil would pick something like that)

Here's an actual good collab.
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/419052 (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/419052)

Although i think it should be a dance style/music video animation.

Any input on this?

I don't see a problem with a Backalley's collab, but I'm totally fed up with these random music video things. THey're not cool anymore, well I mean you COULD make a good one, but none of the recent ones are.

A better idea to me would be something that is tangible as a cartoon. Where we could get together and we could all do certain parts of a whole cartoon. Eg. Rtil: backgrounds/angle setup, redmongoose et al: music
someone else does on character, someone else another... yet another person for effects, or a coupel for effects and so on.

A collab like this would really push people to work as a team and to be able to make their styles mesh properly, because quite frankly you will have to do these things as an animator.

I think collabs are awesome. From what I know, Flash CS3 is an animating program is it now? I haven't gotten anything for Christmas for the past two years except for a coat, and some gift cards, so they're trying to look for it on adobe.com...I'm trying to to be an animator as well as making music you see...

Only if we join our hands together, collab ideas such as this might work. You see...

raise them together

lives that are real
yeah lets all join hands
raise them together
it's a fight for the

I was being ironic about that collab though xP Id like to try out a flash collab, even if it really is that much of a pain in the ass as you say, id like to experience at least one. So far ive been in silly art forum collabs back at NG. BOOOORRRIINGGG

lmao the ng art forums. collabs are pretty damn frustrating, because you'll always have to deal with people who make a commitment but never do a part. this is why 90% of collabs die and never get finished (or the original collab author ends up doing most of the work, which they were planning on to begin with.)

I do have this big collab that I started up, but if you want to be in it, you'll have to contend with:

A. Dragonforce music (in particular, a song made famous by a specific guitar-based video game)
B. An interesting challenge, I'll be happy to explain it if you want.

I don't hate Dragonforce because they're power metal, I hate Dragonforce because they're bad. Through the Fire and Flames is harder to play on Guitar Hero than it is on a real guitar. There is no technique needed at all to play their songs, just speed, which bores me. I like stuff that pushes limits, not pushes the sound barrier.

That being said, at least it's not an emo song, like that Come Clarity collab. UGH!

ROFL and speed doesnt require technique you say?

Speed IS technique you fool.

cant play fast on the piano if you dont have good technique.

And i can guarantee you that its hard to play on real guitar than on guitar hero. i can 100% absolutely positively guarantee you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3H4liC2sWg

About 3:00 minutes in is where the assrape starts.

How bout you watch the whole song, or at least till the guitar's are boxed in during the solos, and tell me it's harder on guitar hero dumbfuck.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUzNcheoY6U

If a 9 year old kid can play the song on expert, it's not that hard.

If that kid practiced the real song on guitar for YEARS he still couldn't do it.

You seemingly fail at appreciating true skill when it comes to actual guitar playing difficulty.
I wouldn't be surprised if you've never even touched a guitar yourself.

Post by: MRat on January 10, 2008 02:04 AM
You're a fucking idiot if you believe that and obviously don't play a whole lot of guitar, or if you do, don't play it all that well. Speed is not technique, speed is an entirely different skill. Also, I've played that Dragonforce song on guitar, and on guitar hero, ALL THE WAY THROUGH. Albeit I don't play it nearly as quickly as Dragonforce does, but considering I'm quite bad at guitar it's not a great testament to the technical abilities of Herman Li. Once again, he's quite fast, but shredding is not technique, it's shredding.

Technique is about rhytm and timing, and the ability to produce sounds from a guitar other than "fret here pluck here" which is all Li does, albeit he does it reather quickly.

You clearly havent heard them LIVE.

All that awesome sounding guitar is the result of lots of technical editing in music software.

Go listen to them at a concert and hear what they REALLY sound like.

Then i'd love to see a video of you playing it on guitar hero, or even a picture of you, clearly standing in front of the score screen.

And also i'd love to see you easily playing through it on real guitar in a video, because if you barely play guitar, your probably playing it at least 100 beats under tempo.

And if speed isnt part of technique, then what skill is it?

I am a musician, and have learned from countless music professors whether it be trombone, bass guitar, or piano
and every one has mentioned that speed is involved in a players technique.

Such as, a quote from my band director, "Ya'll have the technique to play this piece, just because it's fast doesn't mean you dont have the technique to play it at performance tempo"
Quoted from Mr. Destry Balch, Kingwood Highschool Band Director, last year, we performed at the Rose Bowl Parade, you can find us on youtube if you google Kingwood High School Band, or KM4B.

I'll just assume that i have more musical experience than you do, and doubt you've had any teaching or schooling in any form of music.

the... laughter... it... WONT STOP! AHAHAH. oh DEAR SWEET JESUS GET ME SOME HELP IT WONT STOP!

I've composed the music for cartoons played on television on the local channels in a number of locations in Minnesoata. I've been in music since I was five. I play the cello, trumpet, piano, drums, guitar, keyboard (yeah it's like a piano), and a few instruments I made myself. I however not a fantastic player of intruments. My skills are much stronger in composition, and theory. I could write a bang up piece for the Oboe, but never play it very well.

I do have alot of knowledge in music.

Once again, I reiterate that the skill of playing fast, is just that playing fast. It's moving quickly. But it's not technique. Technique is actually getting down into it and understanding the guitar. Harmonics, though pretty easy to produce, are more technical than the entire song of Through the Fire and Flames.

I have seen Dragonforce live, and people like Santana will always display far greater technical skill than Arman Li. He just plucks at an insane rate and hopes it sounds cool. And sometimes it does. I'm not downplaying the importance of speed here, but I am saying that it isn't technique, it's just skill. They are two different things, and always will be.

I'd make a video of me playing the Guitar Hero fire and flames, but I can't beat it. It's too hard. That's my point.

Hopefuly I'll get around to making a video of me playing it on real guitar though, but I'd doubt it would make any differnce, because you would say "WELL LOOK AT THAT HE ISN'T PLAYING IT AT THE RIGHT SPEED AT ALL!" and I would say, "I never said I could. In fact, I said I couldn't."

I can however play Eric Clapton songs at the proper tempo, and trust me, playing an Eric Clapton song is more demanding in terms of working the guitar than a Dragonforce song. If I sat there and played Dragonforce over and over I would eventually learn to play it fast enough, because the notes would just settle into my muscle memory. However, things like erratic chord progressions and the abiltity to yank an extra note out where there simply shouldn't be one will never be learned by memorizing and poudnign away at the song. You'll need to learn about the guitar itself, where to put your hands, how every note matches up and contrasts. That is technique. Ay dufus could spend hours messing around with some notes and come up with a Dragonforce song, because it's a random collection of plucked notes, and nothing else.

Anyway, I'm more than certain in some way you can I actually agree here, but we're miscommunicating our points and getting flustered because one or the other backs down. Also, just because your High School band teacher says something doesn't mean it's true.

ALSO look out sometime this year for the debut album from a Brit named Alex De Panama, his band is called Codename Premonition. Chances are I'll be listed as "Producer" on that, and I'm featured on the album too. I've been working with him on the tracks for that album for years, and they're shaping up nicely. Yes I know, this is just a sad and shameless plug right here, but if you're into industrial music, and insanity, check him out.

My collab's unique challenge wouldn't make it "100% random" in a way, you've heard of that 100 themes challenge? Basically, each part is allocated to a specific number of themes, and you must choose several of the non-taken themes, and have your part contain elements of those themes. How you implement them however, is up to you.

i've actually had this idea for a while now

how about animating to "Suspended Animation" by Fantomas? i dont just mean a single song, i mean the whole dam album. it would be neat cause it has no lyrics so everyone would have to come up with their own ideas instead of just leaching off of the lyrics and alot of the songs are short so it would be pretty easy to pump out entries.

that or animate the entire commercial album by the residents (each song being a minute long)
