Yeh, im sure theres at least 3 or 4 people on here that know who i am. Ive been around in the flash scene for like 4 years now, tho i only feel like im getting good at animation now. Spent the first 2 - 3 years making parodies, made a bit of a name for myself, started doing my own original stuff and lost 90% of me fanbase. mm hello I used to be one of your fanboys. Also, the guy who's doing that new HALO thing is doing it from the fame only (I think rtil said that the guy who makes them told him). Don't warn him though, I want to see what will happen ehehe.

I am glad that older animators that started internet animation 3-4 years ago start to think about using FBF now. (Zictor, you and RubberNinja a while ago already).

Im not against tweened animation, i just think everything should be used appropriately. The Tweened series im working on will only have very simple vector art, similar to that found in Loco Roco and Patapon, art that couldnt be done fbf, or atleast not without looking odd. Im definately passed the stage of animating actual complex characters with tweened character models tho. Im caught up in the whole idea of characters actually acting and moving appropriately rather then just standing around spitting dialogue.

Well, i guess its because i assume that the only people who would read those are kids anyway, most people over the age of 20 and still animating know what they want to do, so theres no point trying to convince them otherwise. The kids that flood these sites tho, they're alot easier to convince to try different things. Im not saying that what i write is the fact and the only way things should be done, i said in my first one that its all merely my opinion, but im assuming that your just as sick and tired of seeing tweened halo and mario parodies as everyone else over the age of 18. Im just trying to throw some ideas into the mix that dont seem to be all that common on newgrounds. As for the writing itself, im no shakespear, and i never claimed to be. Im just your average joe that finished high school but never bothered with university or college, but rather joined the work force. And thats how i write and plan on continuing to write.

First of all you have to be popular to be wash up, i was never ever popular, i was merely associated with animators that were popular at the time.

I never claimed my work was flawless, i have never even claimed it was even good, i am quite aware that when i was younger i said allot of arrogant bullocks, but i have humbled quite a bit since then, whether its from age or from working in the flash animation industry and finding how depressing and demanding it actually is. I am quite well aware of my works flaws, and i am always trying to iron those flaws out.

I was unaware that making a journal entry that people can choose themselves whether to read or not read that clearly states its all one persons opinion was forcing my ideas upon people, but there you go, you learn something new everyday.

Actually my fan base was on DeviantArt, never Newgrounds.

And no shit internet popularity doesn't mean anything, but alot of people dont seem to realise that.

He may not be the most deep or strong of characters, but hes memorable for the right reasons, in my books at least. I am impressed by anyone who can base a character entirely around being random without relying on pulp culture for the gags.

I havent really been active over the last 2 years. I started a couple of small crazes back in the day, i created a short called Bricks are Fun which was a big hit on DeviantArt, each of the episodes getting front page 10 days in a row and spawning countless rip offs. I was the first to organize a single song collab where a large number of authors animated there character singing to it, which ofcourse everyones been doing since and getting alot of recognition for, One Love which was the first was just kinda brushed aside. I also worked with Legendary Frog  on The Matrix Still has you which is still probably my biggest regret, and i organized The Doom Project which was the first serious gaming tribute to come out. But thats all going back 3 or 4 years.

I kinda lost my will to do flash after i got 40 minutes worth of animation into making a feature film and my HDD died on me so i lost it all, that and working in flash all day doing advertising, by the time i get home im usually to tired of the program to do my own thing. This year tho i hope to change all that and start taking it seriously again.

Bug, I gotta see, you're one funny bohunkadunkadunkdunkdunk. However I've got to say I atleast admire Gerkinman's will to try to be critical, even if I don't agree with his opinions.


And to Rtil, you're obviously ignoring the principles of developing a strong character if you don't think Blockhead is one. You can go ahead and say he's not funny, that the idea is stupid, and so forth, which is your opinion, but the traits of a strong character are pretty well left up to fact. Does he behave consistenly? Yes. Does he have a personality unique to his character? Yes. Does he experience an varied emotional range? Yes. Thus he is a pretty strong character.

That's how I remember it from writing class at least. His merit is a character is completely up in the air mind you. As is how well he's animated.

HAHAHA are you kidding me? strong characteristic traits are things like strong sense of individuality and if the character has the ability to change in the story.

blockhead is NOT an individual. the only thing consistent about him is that he has about a dozen different personalities that fire off at completely random times. he doesn't have a personality, his design is weak, and he disconnects himself to the viewer.

in every episode he never is influenced by anything around him, and is a complete mystery as to what his goals, motivation or purpose to the story are.

i can't believe anyone would look to blockhead as an example of a strong character. he's just about the WORST example for strong character i can think of

i disagree Rtil. your dislike for the character is stopping you from being objective. he does have a personality, it's plain to see. his design in appearence doesn't affect whether he's a strong character or not. in fact i'd go so far as to say he's one of the STRONGEST characters because he influences everything about the story. he has the greatest prescence visible in any of those dumb, unfunny flash cartoons you see stinking up newgrounds.

i can't even begin to grasp how you came to believe he has simply a load of personalities that fire off randomly. to me it sounds like you watched 2 episodes and nothing else, which leads me to believe you don't have a whole lot of evidence, but who knows. I don't, not really. listen closer to the dialogue, it's not all that random. it's stupid sure, but a stupid character doesn't mean he's not a strong character. but you get alot of insight into blockhead and his world view through his dialogue. you just have to think about it, but i'm guessing you watched it, said this is dumb, and that was that. which is fine, cuz blockhead is dumb, but i still think you're missing something.

maybe we just think differently though. i find blockhead entirely memorable, which to me is abig part of being a strong character. perhaps you forget him instantly though.

whatever i'm not going to push it anymore, because we're both rooted in our ways, and we're both fairly intelligent, which will make us stupid.

Wait, so design has nothing to do with character? This is truly fascinating. I'll be sure to make my designs pure shit from now on since it doesn't make any difference.
Just because I dislike the character doesn't mean I'm biased against him. I actually didn't mind the original episodes that much (in fact you can find favorable reviews for the earlier ones), but I got sick of it after I realized he was a one trick pony. Of course the episode are about him - he's the main character. And, I don't know, maybe it's just me, but the fact that he's bright saturated yellow and red may make him stick out out of a series completely made up of graphically depicted real people. Pure genius? Probably not. Bad design? Most likely.

I've seen most of the series. What's happening to you is that you're buying into the swain's faux-intellectual writing that is actually disjointed and about as much garbage as a super mario bros z spinoff. The only thing he has going for him is that he has a better grasp on the english language than your average 13-year old NG kid. I understand blockhead's world - he misinterprets everything. It's been done before and much better. The best example I can think of is Yotsuba, a popular manga book about a young girl who looks at the world and the things in it a lot differently than most people would. The eyes-of-a-child type story.

The problem with blockhead is that he is just goddamn annoying, he doesn't fit in the world he was dropped into visually, and no, he DOES NOT have a personality! How can you not watch an episode and see that he will go from polar opposites of character from one second to the next for the sake of dropping a two-bit joke? It's complete trash, and anyone outside of the idiocy of Newgrunds tends to realize that.

it didn't seem right trying to understand the character or the plot
because blockhead is almost like a stick figure, except added detail and an annoying way of talking
and i didn't know much about characters or animation then

Like I said, I'm not going to be this guy who can't let things go, we just see things differently. But as a side note, I didn't say design has nothing to do with character, I said it doesn't determine whether he's a strong character or not. A strong character is someone with prescenece and influence the way I see it, and a character with a brilliant design could be just as forgettable.



And you do come across as biased is all. And once again, I never said Blockhead was good. As for his personality changes? I don't see em as anything more drastic than a pretty common moodswing. He just doesn't have emotional control.









And the Yotsuba was cool, but it was like Blockhead after a while; it never changed much.

there's only 4 volumes of yotsuba available in english. i think it would be pretty unfair to judge it at this point

the action sequences have some pretty decent animation, but lack and really flair or pizzazz. also it's an anime show. yeah some are good, but for the most part, this one isn't.

i think he's getting better, but i wouldn't say its good. it's smooth though, which is at least something, i guess. well it's not always smooth, but sometimes. i like his lipsync actually.
