sorry if there already is a thread for this i had a quick look and couldnt see one
went to see Kimi no Na wa. there was a showing at the local cinema, didnt really have any expectations. room was packed, crowd was ok. one annoying dude who kept head banging to the songs.
was gonna say it reminded me a lot of 5 Centimeters Per Second but of course its by the same director.
really liked it, it was pretty cute and it went down with the audience really well. i was more invested in the story and characters than most other "blockbusters" i went to the cinema to see this year. would have been happy to sit and watch an entire film just about them and problems related to the body swap
even without the ""TIME TRAVEL"" and the comet murdering half the cast.
genuinely funny, didnt really have any issues with it except
when Taki discovers the town Mitsuha lived in was smashed by the comet, he goes to check his phone messages from her. the phone messages disappear in front of his eyes, its pretty gimmicky. normally i wouldn't really care about something like that but it seemed like such a cheap way of solving the problem. id have preferred the messages just werent there when he checked the phone, but i understand it made it easier for the viewer to understand.
been watching more anime recently so ill happily accept some recommendations.
it won't be out here in theaters until next year. i'm waiting until then to see it. i hated 5cm/sec but i'm willing to give shinkai another shot because i think his directorial style has matured a lot since then

Also I know I've blasted Shinkai in the past but I haven't seen 5c/s in about 7 years or Hoshi o Ou Kodomo since it came out here. Definitely going to give his stuff another shot before seeing this if I can stomach the one about the cell phones and mechs and the other one about the big tower and the violins.
Also watch Flip Flappers, Sakamoto desu ga?, Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan and Kizumonogatari you heathen they are AOTY.
And read Voynich Hotel if you haven't. It ended last year but the humor always reminded me a bit of your stuff even though you're a much better artist than Sayman Dowman.
nanatsu no taizai is AOTY you filthy fucking pleb
you misspelled mob psycho 100
Good but not even the best psychic show of the summer.

That was just to get your attention, the real AOTY is Oshiete! Galko-chan
But to be perfectly honest the source material is just too great to pass up recommending Nanatsu no taizai to anyone, It will shatter every cliche and expectation you have about shounen and then some
It's pure gold.
5-minute anime better than mob? it must have been pretty amazing then
i'll give it a shot
It's also released in batches, which are somewhat easier to find.
Takes about seven 5-minute segments to really take off IIRC, only because most of the supporting cast is introduced by then.
Enjoy. (http://horriblesubs.info/shows/saiki-kusuo-no-psi-nan)
it is very funny but i don't think it's better than mob. saiki is more than just a psychic, he's basically a god
Can't argue with that. I just really like how the cast in Saiki each has a unique way of interacting with his powers (and to a lesser extent the man himself). The only characters in MP100 I think approach that level of chemistry are Mob and Reigan (maybe Teruki). The art is fucking amazing though and I look forward to seeing where the story's headed.
well Saiki just so happens to have a unique power for every single circumstance. the author can conveniently make one up for whatever situation - which is fine, since it doesn't take itself too seriously. he can be as OP as the author wants him to be since the whole show is just about how Saiki's powers complicate his life.
Yeah that's what I like about it, the Deux ex machina always misfires. Mob's powers don't in the same way, but the writing makes clear we're not meant to envy him, either. Digimon made a somewhat insightful video about Mob but I know ya dun care for his pretenses.

what the hell I thought mob psycho was a crime thriller, I may check it out now

things i learned in this video:
he's not wrong, though. to me, mob subverting the marty stu, self-insert white knight powerfantasy that comes with being an OP MC was one of the biggest appeals of the anime
Fedoralord he may be but that video helped me appreciate Mob and the villains' relationship a bit more. The self-improvement vs. self-aggrandizement theme wasn't something I picked up lucidly the first time cause I'm dumb!
well the important thing about digibro is he's only pretending to be smart, don't be so hard on yourself!
I guess, but that vid still helped me appreciate the show a bit more than I already had been.
There's a degree of chicanery in all analytical criticism. The only thing separating the mildly competent from the applesauce is a willingness to engage with the work by itself, and a deliberate attempt to remove one's preconceptions and politics from the equation though it's impossible to fully decouple (for examples of the aforementioned applesauce, refer to any The Game Theorists or Feminist Frequency video in your Youtube sidebar). I don't think analyzing a work of fiction is inherently worse than enjoying it passively or from a purely artistic/mechanical standpoint as long as the critic/viewer/player/reader does that.
i don't mind that he does what he does, i just resent that he's nothing more than a fervent consumer who has no firsthand experience creating what he critiques - and that weebs feel validated by leeching their opinions off them because this is the best they've got.
Agreed. That's really all a critic is though, a fervent consumer/garbageman.
Any advice on not rubbing actual creators the wrong way, should one attempt that style of criticism? Is there a next best thing to working in an actual animation/videogame studio?
the next best thing is probably surrounding yourself with them and asking for their input or perspective. but just because someone works in the industry doesn't mean they'd make a good critic, although they can shed light on the creative process. like being able to answer 'why does this look good/bad', etc
I appreciate the advice. I think a lot of big time critics avoid overly intimate relationships with creators to avoid conflict of interest, but with monolingual western critics and Japanese industries that shouldn't be as much of a problem. You'd think more Youtube smarty pants critical analysts would put in the effort required.
Talking to you on this forum about animation and everything is always extremely valuable to me. It's a nice thought that some others working in the industry might be as open to discussion with outsiders.
i enjoy talking about it because i think knowledge on the creative process is valuable for viewers, especially in eastern animation where visual learning and passing on skills through apprenticeship is still very common. approach to animation from a directorial standpoint is something that can be learned through visual analysis alone. whereas in the west we have the 'animators survival kit', no such eastern equivalent exists, so the more people there are to appreciate and document it there are the better.
