For me it was Brawl Funnies, specifically a certain segment. (http://tinyurl.com/juyqrxe)
Edit: Added the swf because fuck video.
came for katawas
stayed for arts
The above poster :P
I was perpetually pissed off at rtil for being better than me then one day while I was perusing his deviant art page while feeling angry I found a link to this here forum and then proceeded to get onto the irc and history was made
Knew of rtil through his KS fanart, then I saw that he opened a patreon. I went to his first stream, heard about the site, and decided to join because I had been talking to another member during the stream who I wanted to get to know better.
And here I still am.
rtil.
i remember finding him originally when he posted pallid fingers on sheezyart
the hentai
I came through hitting on anime girls
followed rtil here through newgrounds back in the day

that and my previous forum died
I never heard of rtil before i got here. Only reason i signed up here was because I was doing some research on the Anipedia's flash extensions. Since i couldnt find it i just browsed this forum for a bit to see if this was a cool place to share my artwork. Now i live as a slave to the memes
i saw those parody flashes on newgrounds when i was like 12 and i didn't immadiately understand the context or intent, but the attitude of the cartoon and the creators came across as very sardonic and hip. the humor and parlance was something i hadn't been exposed to yet at the point since i was mainly browsing sonic forums at the time, so it was a pretty new world to me and i wanted in on it pretty fuckin bad
I joined this forum because rtil is my friend and because I like message boards.
watched rtil's animation 'Gum' and decided to join up
at the time the only forum I posted on regularly was the newgrounds BBS (and was only 15 at the time) so I had a pretty rough time until about 2010
in all that time I have contributed absolutely nothing :wile:
Found rtil through KS, found this place while looking for more of his KS stuff. Didn't sign up until he started doing his sketch request streams though I think.
i actually registered on this forum in 2009 when i was like a middle school kid and still had some good memories of this place. so i signed up again and now everything's completely different
not kidding btw

Metropolis Circuit
I liked Metropolis Circuit back in High School, I missed the fun and drama that comes with small internet groups, and thought if I hung out here I'd eventually get over the crippling self-doubt that I'll never make good art.
I didn't.
I don't remember, probably rtil's art.

hardcore
I stumbled upon the site roughly a year ago whilst looking for some HTML coding for another (more gaming-centric) forum which I administer with an iron clawww and an evil laugh. Or at least I used to before people stopped signing up any more and it simply became a place for the active members to hang out alongside XBox Live, Skype, Facebook and so stopped really requiring much administration, which in turn was before I lost internet at home. I've actually been posting more over here than there lately, which miffs me a little bit on account of that being a staple and one of the only things I have in common with my thirteen year-old self who initially signed up. But I guess there are just fewer members ad active topics over there, so it's all good.
The code didn't work because the other forum can't be updated to HTML5 because the initial creator has been MIA for a very long time. Allie looked pretty pretty though, and I was enticed to keep coming back here via my bookmarks in hopes that Scary Monsters or Nice Sprites might show up along the header some time. I like small forums where most people know each other, and this forum had only slightly too many members for my abashed little brain to keep track, so I eventually joined.
Necroposting time!
Judging by the replies the answer is obvious, Rtil.
In my specific case: first was just following him for his NSFW art, discovered him for his Newgrounds blog post about the Yoko DeviantArt Incident, from there I gave him the follow. then In early 2024 I found his blog post about the return of TheBackAlleys forum. after some technical problems with the captcha I managed to get in here. now doing the equivalent of urban exploration online.

On that note I came here for the Deviantart drama thing (2006?)
And I think I left an anonymous comment about how funny it was.
Edit: I joined in 2008, I couldnt really reach a computer in 2006-2007
i was desperate to engage w newgrounds social life but none of the artists i wanted to ingratiate myself to actually hung out in public on ng because it was full of children like myself. i knew there were offsites and spinoff forums, but i was not brave enough to post. i almost certainly wound up here by clicking the link at the end of metropolis circuit, then probably stuck around because zekey was here — watching his animation the morgue on flashplayer dot com was my first intro to flash and the downward spiral commenced with terrible speed
we're still circling the drain B)
Read about it in the entrails of a moose.
I believe art has an incredible ability to heal and transform our emotional states. If we consider how deeply personal experiences shape artistic expression, can we argue that the act of creating art is as therapeutic as the art itself? What if every piece of art we encounter is not just a reflection of the artist but also a mirror of our own unexpressed emotions?
Idk honestly
once upon a time everyone found this place via newgrounds. nowadays i haven't the slightest clue

Ok I actually remember now.
I was watching a YouTube video and went to the channel the video was made by, in the description the backalleys was linked there.
I tried to get in 2 to 3 times afterwards, one day I was checking my emails when I saw an email from the backalleys letting me know I had been let in. But that was like 2 months ago, and I was automatically signed out. And I couldn't remember my username so I was stuck.
Skip ahead a bit and now I'm finally logged in.
ah so you found me through my youtube channel
the few people that follow me there often assume i am dead or something because i rarely ever update it
i really should put up all my animations on there as shorts, that's really all i have, though
Pretty off-topic with the thread but related to Rtil's YT channel. it funny to see the Move Your Feet! upload with the recent influx of comments saying "It's the first object show ever made" (pretty clear they never watched the original videoclip) while the rest of uploads stuck with comments from a decade ago. the common source is Cary Huang. you can still find old comments on Move Your Feet! but now you will find newer ones.
when that happened i was very confused because i wasn't familiar with the term "object show" - i watched the video people were coming from and obviously the generation that came up with this term is pretty young because you can go back and find "object shows" from decades past if the definition is simply "inanimate objects that talk". however it was very interesting and at the very least i'm glad that my animation might have inspired someone to start animating even if it was subconscious.

It was this one actually https://www.youtube.com/@ohokthen (https://www.youtube.com/@ohokthen) I was watching "The almighty loaf" video on the channel when I found the backalleys linked in the bio.
oh! that is my super not-so-secret alt channel, which - of course - has a shitpost video i made on a whim that ended up becoming a meme. that is of course the loaf video. it's a great conversation starter, at least.
The already deep lore of TBA has gotten even more deeper.
