Title: Dragon Ball Z or Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon
Post by: Bamyasi on January 26, 2016 09:00 PM
Reminder that Dragon Ball comes on at 5 and YYH at 5:30 and you only have time to watch one if you want to finish your homework.

It's pretty early in the first season of both, so before they became purely about fighting.

I think the answer is pretty clear.

Will add another poll with different options after this one is over, so don't start talking about how much you miss those other (better) shows just yet.

they are both good but i'd have to go with dragonball. though at the time both were airing i thought anime was stupid. i'm sure 4th grade me would have been very disappointed to find out i'd grow up to be a huge weeb :wile:

I don't see a Z up there, so Hakusho, and just because of Kurama.

This one's tough. I definitely remember certain individual episodes of Dragon Ball better (the ones with the Rabbit Mob, Chi Chi, Launch, the Red Ribbon Army, etc.), but I think the overarching storyline and themes in YYH left more of an impression on me. Also Kurama.

I tried so many times to stay up for Tenchi after it stopped airing during the day but I always fell asleep. I think it was the first anime I ever remember seeing on CN though. I still have the cassettes. My Viz, Pioneer, Bandai and FUNi tapes are the only ones I never let my mom give away.

I was lucky(?) to have older relatives who were already into anime. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have liked it, or would have been into that bullshit on Fox and Warner.

This isn't a thread for nostalgia it is literally 2002 ITT.

[spoiler=Nostalgia]That said I'm extremely grateful to have been a kid at a time when CN's programming was risky (risqué even) and didn't infantilize us. Thinking back it's weird how they allowed the shows they broadcast to candidly depict things like death and sexuality, even if I didn't find out they were occasionally altered until watching them on VHS (which is an interesting angle on the censorship discussion). I don't want to sound like one of those generational elitists, but is there even a single program on CN nowadays that doesn't patronize its target demo? I guess shows like Steven Universe and Adventure Time deal with relationships, which is healthy, but it all feels so hamfisted, like they're trying to appeal to the tumblr crowd and elementary schoolers in equal measure, but independently, instead of letting the intrinsic quality of the content alone draw audiences.

I'm sad that children nowadays will have to more actively seek out imported media that isn't Yo-kai Watch instead of having it presented to them. There was something so mysterious and exotic about these shows that those with a more consumerist bent like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh could never quite capture, which is why they're infinitely less interesting to talk about now (with the exception of a few like Digimon (http://web.archive.org/web/20050208180838/http://popmatters.com/columns/schwartz/011008.shtml), Tamers specifically). It probably more or less carries over to recency, but it seems like the taste for this stuff among foreign populations fluctuates with the quality of the shows aired during a given generation's formative years, and the 4Kids butcheries of mid-late 2000s Toonami programs simply isn't that.

we live in a world now where creators are, for the most part, inescapably intertwined with the fans and vice versa. the moment an episode airs on tv, tens of thousands of people immediately broadcast their opinions to the open air and even the creators themselves on twitter, tumblr etc, and the creators most certainly read them and often even openly respond. so the creators for better or worse no longer live in a vacuum where they are creating based off of pure self-motivation, now having the fans looming over them at every waking moment. this is why i think a lot of shows as they go on tend to tread into the "fanfiction" territory in order to please the fickle fanbases that can make their life a living hell with more ease than they could have ever hoped for.

God that's so fucking depressing. Is it like that in Japan too?

It just creates this weird threshold of quality where no one bothers improving because twiticism is so polarized (here's looking at you Undertale).

I guess it makes sense that homegrown series would be more lucrative that way. Do you think that's also why we don't get as much imported programming on children's blocks?

i'm not really sure what it's like in Japan, but Japanese artists practically live online especially on pixiv and twitter. pretty much all of the most popular mangaka and animators have one or both and regularly post on it. as for how they interact with the fans i don't know. but 2ch is very vocal, so much so that it's often parodied in anime as having a direct influence on a director's psyche. best example i can think of is the fictional director character of Kinoshita in Shirobako, forever scarred by his first original anime "boing boing paradise" being panned by netizens almost a decade before the setting of the anime.

Well at least 2ch isn't a Web 2.0 ideological social force as far as I know.

Also I really need to finish that show. Thanks for the reminder.

Although I'm bias

DBZ has never been interesting to me. A little bit too ragey,  Yugi > DB:Z
Kurama is hot.

I didn't watch very much of it tbh. I just saw a superhero cartoon employing manga iconography/emotional shorthand and nope'd the fuck out of there.

yuyu hakusho was actually the first anime i watched (aside from pokemon) as far as i can remember.

i don't think i ever watched dragonball considering i wasn't alive while it was airing lol

but yyh was so strange to me that it kinda scared me off from anime due to the wacky fighting and long monologues of characters going "oh shit, badguy is at 75% power and now i have to do the sacred technique thing and use the power of friendship to defeat him or he'll take over the world!!!111!!11"

then i watched cowboy bebop.

Not rich enough of get Toonami apparently ZING.

Dragon Ball aired well into the noughties.

i watched most of my anime on adult swim back in the 2000s, when toonami had basically merged with them iirc.

when you say dragon ball, do you mean the original dragon ball or dragon ball z

wait did dragonball really air into the 2000s? i didn't remember seeing it anywhere let alone being aware of it's existence since i was only a kid. if it did air during that time period it couldn't have been on CN.
Title: Re: Dragon Ball or YuYu Hakusho
Post by: Bamyasi on February 6, 2016 09:57 AM
Yep. The wiki (http://toonami.wikia.com/wiki/Toonami_Lineups_(1997-Present)) says the original Dragon Ball aired afternoons from late 2001 to early 2004. I remember when it first started airing because Dragon Ball Z had never interested me much but I liked the prequel.

Are you talking about Midnight Run? That was always preferable, because the shows typically ran uncut.

Also new poll coming soon.
