Title: Magic: The Gathering.
Post by: Unless on September 22, 2015 12:39 PM
According to the search results, there have been a thread or two about this in the past. I elected to create a new one instead of bumping one that was never really established and hasn't seen the light of day in over a year.
I'm sure everybody's heard of this, it's a trading card game produced in late 1993. Apparently the biggest and also first in the world, according to some sources I don't really care enough to investigate. Several groups of new cards are released every year and each group is divided into usually three smaller groups, and one of these types of groups is called a 'set'. I only got into the game within the past year or two when my sister bought me an entrance to a 'pre-release' for one of these sets, which is public release of the cards contained in the set and as I understand it, an outright contradiction in terms.

The next pre-release is known as Battle for Zendikar. It features colossal land creatures and scary tentacle monsters, so naturally I'm all over this opening. I have a couple of friends also heading to the release with me.
Each entrance gains a box of some relatively randomised cards and one must build a deck of 40 cards and compete with other players and not win the prize of more cards because it's really hard and you suck at this game.

Here is a list of the revealed cards thus far: http://magic.wizards.com/en/content/battle-zendikar-cards (http://magic.wizards.com/en/content/battle-zendikar-cards)

Perhaps this is telling in more ways than one, though my favourite colours would simply have to be Black and Blue, though I'm not opposed to using that one mono Green deck to reliably win the game within four turns when I want to get under one's skin. I often do.

Does anybody else care for this at all?

I used to play Yu-Gi-Oh in primary school, but that stopped being cool afterwards, so my parents insisted I ditch it in an attempt to fit in better. In retrospect, needn't have bothered. So too did Pokémon, but I never really gave that up, and eventually found a friend in it, who is the same friend attending this Magic thingie with me. So that's nice.
I always wanted one of these things (http://www.digitalmonkeybox.com/images/yugiohdumbass.JPG), but never got one. Holy shit so cool.

I had one of those but I could never wear it because it was heavy and I was 9

Oh dear, that's sad. In fact, that may well be the second saddest thing I've had the displeasure of experiencing today.

Nay, I went to take a sup of tea and found the cup was empty. As we all know, this is objectively the worst thing that can happen to somebody.

I mainly only get to play with my younger brother when I'm visiting, as I've moved away from the place that was actually near a hobby shop and into somewhere where I'm more likely to get mugged. It was cheaper, and so now I can afford more Magic cards, which is only logical.

New Converge and Landfall cards in Battle For Zendikar are relevant to my interests because I like to make decks of five colours.
With this in mind, I can assume that this is what's up: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/5-colour-planeswalkers-3/. (http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/5-colour-planeswalkers-3/.)
Yes, this is my own deck and my own profile. My binder isn't visible as I haven't long enough yet been a member, which is sad.

MtG bitched at konami for using the word magic on some cards in the early days of YGO, ahaha, oh man, the memories.

lmfao i remember dat, they changed them from magic to spell cards
i tried to trade in a binder of old yugioh cards for new magic cards last year and they were all worthless even the ones that were high value like 12 years ago, what a terrible investment

Oh, so that's why they'd changed. I was aware at the time but didn't really look into it too much. I'd completely forgotten about that and didn't know of the existence of Magic for about ten years afterwards, which is interesting to me.

Also, that's sad. I have several old Pokémon, YuGiOh, Digimon cards that I'd be willing to trade away for MtG ones, but haven't yet looked into how much they'd be worth.

I'm going to post a couple of decks on which I've been working, then stop bumping this thread at least until a new set is released or something.

Also, I believe my inventory is now public. Also, also, I believe nobody cares.

I played a bit of MTG in high school and sometimes when my high school friend group visits we just pull out our old EDH decks and play

EDH is definitely super rewarding

I never got into that format mainly because the only people I played with seemed disinterested in it.

Though I generally am a little put off anyway, as the deck-building and deciding how many of each card to put into your deck in order to adjust the odds of it showing up in your game is a large part of the game I already know. When you have a significantly larger deck and it's made up of ~60 unique cards, I feel as though luck plays a much larger part in your game, as does your wallet.
The only EDH deck I've ever designed had 55 Shadowborn Apostles (http://tappedout.net/mtg-card/shadowborn-apostle/).

yeah, i think if you have a playgroup that does 60 card formats, the deck construction part is more rewarding

however, i think edh gameplay is really fun and enjoyable. it's really nice with a few drinks, and multiplayer is complex with diplomacy and betrayals

related: here's a semi-janky EDH deck i assembled recently

It's more like I have a single friend, and we don't meet up that often unfortunately. I'm sure it'd be fun to play inebriated, and I'm sure it'd be fun to play in larger groups as opposed to just 1v1 all the time. If I had more local friends into the game and also more money, I'm sure I'd love to make some sort of Proliferating Group Hug thing. Oh well.

you could always just look up your local games store (assuming you're near one). they probably host Friday Night Magic sessions where anyone can pay a fee and join in on the fun times. lots of people play drafts and EDH during FNM.

Unfortunately I've moved away from my old place which had a hobby store of that sort, in favour of some place cheaper and have only subsequently gotten back into Magic in any real sense. I do know of a few local people that have said that they at least used to play, which became apparent when I introduced card sleeves for standard playing cards to protect from damage during drinking games; also because I have a box covered in stickers in which I sometimes carry things I don't want loose in my bag, and at a glance it all blends in pretty well with the Magic and Magic accessories℠.
Though we tend to only all meet up in the one apartment which is owned by friends which don't play, and it would be weird to play there. I'm also happy enough with the dynamic at the moment and don't want to rock the boat.

I'll just settle for playing Standard matches at prerelease events for the foreseeable future I guess.
