[spoiler=Big dumb meandering diary entry don't read]I think what's interesting about the current-gen youtube drama club trolls is that it's expected that a portion or even majority of viewers will be in on the joke, whereas performers like Daxflame's and Andy Kaufman's goal seemed to be generating as much confusion as possible (for illustration, compare Daxflame or CopperCab to someone like Sam Hyde). Enough netizens are now aware of Poe's law and trolling to generally spot a trickster, yet young people like these still throw themselves to the wolves! I mean read any of the comments in an Our Third Life video to see how deeply cruel the 12 year old mind can be when faced with cognitive dissonance. It seems almost masochistic to continue the ruse. But it also generates the opposite effect (continued in part 2).

I also find it interesting from a literary perspective. It's sexist to point out, but young women can generally coax a visceral response from viewers/voyeurs much more easily than men, simply by virtue of being female, especially if there is a pretense of intimacy, which makes trolling more cost-effective. It's really the one of the few internet tropes worth talking about imo tbh. Young women like Ashley Jones et al. are hyper-aware of their magnetism; the way they use their power to elicit desire from a dumb, unsuspecting crowd of 4chan browsing beta males I find super interesting, especially as to whether it has ever sated their desire to be desired. At the severe risk of sounding sexist again, most women just go to clubs/in public in various states of undress if they want anonymous idiots ogling at them, but there's more nuance to it in here. The way this process is obfuscated and sublimated in cyberspace really inspires me, and wish I were smart enough to make fiction out of it.
