Yes a+ action film!

Honestly I can't remember the last time I saw a blockbuster, or movie in general for that matter, achieve everything it was trying to achieve and do it so spectacularly.

Yes
the shit was fucking amazing
It also turns out the director said the movie was a feminist movie to shield himself from criticism from all the women getting rekt, so there's that.

Post by: Bamyasi on May 17, 2015 05:52 AM
Honestly the movie didn't strike me as feminist (it was still called "Mad Max" after all). It just wasn't as sexist as most movies of it's ilk.

I think ideology is clouding your vision, Sam.

what makes this action blockbuster stand out is that you can see how much blood, sweat and tears went in to actually making it. it's not enough any more that the creators of a film are fans of what they're making, because over-reliance on cgi has become very tiresome and boring to look at. at least for me, anyway - special effects no longer wow me very often anymore, unless they are used in necessity it comes off as cheap. of course, george miller was the perfect person to pick to direct this film, and he loves to take things over the top. i think the best example is this article (http://www.mtv.com/news/2161513/mad-max-fury-road-guitar-player-doof-warrior-colin-gibson/) talking about the creation of Doof, his working flamethrower guitar and rig complete with an operational speaker system - just one of the amazing functional works of art used in this film. works of art that they can even take on convoys (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-05-13/mad-max-film-premiere-road-convoy-in-central-sydney/6465890) after the fact.

unfortunately the supermodel actresses playing the slaves gave pretty unconvincing performances, but that's my only nitpick about the movie. the plot was thin, but spirited enough without trying to take itself too seriously that it didn't matter. i liked it so much i want to see it in theaters again to take it all in. and i rarely feel that way about a movie. overall i'd give it an 8/10 .. maybe a 9 but i need to wait and see how i feel about it after a second viewing.

Honestly I don't think anyone else but George Miller could have pulled it off. The first two movies of the franchise are some of my favorites of their genre, and I like how they've gotten progressively weirder (or at least more flamboyantly so) with every installment.

The supermodels' performances didn't really bother me because they were more just there for set dressing/symbolism, but other people I saw it with voiced that same complaint.

A lot of the things I loved about this movie I also loved about 2013's Snowpiercer. Definitely check that one out if any of you haven't.

Edit: Wow three posts beginning with the word "honestly" in a row. This movie is so good it made me illiterate.
Title: Re: Mad Max: Fury Road
Post by: rtil on May 17, 2015 06:30 AM
snowpiercer has been in my queue for a while. it was on my radar ever since i found out who directed it.

i guess the supermodel slave girls bothered me because every line they delivered was super flat and they stood out because of who they were. but they could have been a lot worse , fortunately they mostly stayed out of the way during the high-octane stuff.

i'd love to see a sequel diving more into the other warring factions that we got a glimpse of. i know they have rich backstories that miller was only able to touch on outside of the film's story. but the film doesn't have the mass appeal to cover the budget, unfortunately. looks like it's going to gross ~$40M this weekend when they spent $150M-$200M on it. i'm not sure how it will do overseas. hopefully it at least breaks even.

I didn't say it was a feminist movie, I just said what I learned from looking around at other's opinions about it, I also said it cuz it was relevant because of the recent buzz about people boycotting it because it was feminist propoganda

The only thing I got out of the movie was testosterone

and a boner, a man-boner

it's a shame that anyone is boycotting the film because it needs all the BO love it can get if we want to see more works of art like this. it's going to be eclipsed by Pitch Perfect 2. i guess that's what MRA's want

Fucking Avengers, man.

It also kills me that so many critics are calling this a "B-movie." There's nothing "B" about it. It's a better production than anything nominated for an Oscar last year.

Also the sound design holy fuck.

i think it's an insult to call this film a b-movie. b-movies wish they were this movie. but i fully expect it to get robbed at the oscars anyway. not that i care anymore, cuz if i did it will just upset me like it does every year.

i still haven't seen the new avengers film and i probably won't until it winds up on streams. i've been burnt out on cape movies since "man of steel" and it hasn't gotten any better. it probably doesn't help that i have almost zero interest in the marvel and dc comic book universes.

Everyone knows that any movie that isn't directed by a Hollywood director is a B movie! Us dirty Australians could never accomplish anything more than that. </3

I am looking forward to seeing it on Tuesday and I really hope it does well, not just because nothing successful comes out of Australia anymore, but because I want to see more practical effects in movies. I haven't seen anything since Godzilla last year because everything looks so fucking fake now that I struggle to get invested in anything I watch. I know that Mad Max made more money in Australia than Star Wars did the year it came out, I hope it happens again.

3D or not 3D, that is the question.
Title: Re: Mad Max: Fury Road
Post by: rtil on May 17, 2015 09:21 PM
i saw it in 3d for fun. i don't regret it but i don't think i would have missed it, either. honestly i never really paid attention to it nor did it distract me at any point. except maybe when the steering wheel goes flying into the screen
Title: Re: Mad Max: Fury Road
Post by: SrsSam77 on May 17, 2015 10:41 PM
IMO the 3d was great and really added quite a bit to most of the scenes, makes you feel like there's sand and engine oil flying in your face; although It did mess with my eyes/focus on the screen at some points, then again, my eyes aren't in the best shape.
Title: Re: Mad Max: Fury Road
Post by: Bamyasi on May 18, 2015 03:23 AM
Yeah I saw it in 2D tonight and really missed the extra dimension. Really helps you know where you and the camera are in space during the more kinetic scenes.

Aside from that it was just as good. Only movie I've seen where the 3D actually added something instead of being a gimmick (that goes for you too, James Cameron).
Title: Re: Mad Max: Fury Road
Post by: rtil on May 18, 2015 08:21 AM
i think james cameron deliberately treats 3d as a gimmick cuz he thinks that's how it's meant to be used

just another way he excels at insulting his audience

So it made almost half as much on its opening weekend as what Pitch Perfect made, in the states anyway.

We don't deserve good movies.

I saw it by the way, I can't remember the last time I came out of the Cinema smiling, but I know for a fact its been at least 5 or 6 years and this is the movie that brought that old smile back. What a thrill. I forgot what it was like to actually be excited while watching a film.

i feel the same way about the excitement regarding live action films. and i can't remember the last time a movie exceeded my expectations.

the next movie i'm genuinely excited for is the force awakens, but it's going to have a hard time topping mad max in terms of enjoyment.

as far as the box office numbers, well, pitch 2 has a more recent prequel to thank for its popularity and appeals to a wider audience. a $40M opening and $110M worldwide take for a $150M budget is pretty good. and hopefully word of mouth will carry it further than a normal theatrical run.

in fact, on monday, mad max made more money than pitch 2.

unfortunately it will have to compete with san andreas, but honestly do disaster films even have that much appeal or draw any more? the theme is so tired and overdone. watching the trailer felt like a film that should have come out 10 years ago.

so i finally saw this movie and i really really enjoyed it. the grandma motorcycles and the prosthetic arm were very nice. lots of small things that really added detail were included too which i loved (the badges on the chest-piece being circuit boards and the (albeit rare) recognition that reloading is a thing. I will say that the cgi scene at the canyon the second time around was really really jarring and not a high point. the practical effects were awesome though. I too saw it in 3d and thought it was a decent addition but nothing to note. still a fantastic movie.

I think I remember reading something that when production started the director only had a handful of crudely drawn storyboards and no script at all
This is the power of post-australianism

Seeing it a third time made me realize the only way it might have possibly been improved would have been had they
cut out the score from the final chase scene and let it just have been the sound of the motors (like the chariot race in Ben-Hur). Then again, it would have been jarring to cut the music in when they needed it at the slow-motion Nux self-sacrifice part.
finally got to see it again. was even better the 2nd time around imo. a lot more details and dialogue popped out to me and i was able to enjoy it even more because of that

my favorite parts:
the sandstorm chase
the canyon bikers dropping grenades onto the war rig
bullet farmer going insane
max and the warboy spitting into the fuel line to make the cars go faster
any part with doof
the final chase and nux's sacrifice
that's basically the entire movie but idgaf

i liked not only that but also i loved how each faction had a different theme for the cars. the russians (forget their name) had all the spikes and stuff on their cars. the war boys had a crazy focus on power. the rich dude's guys (gas town?) i think all had luxury cars and the guys with the guns had a mighty focus on militarizing all of their cars (the treads and shit).
