I enjoyed it, but only because the giant monster stuff was amazing. The human elements were kind of distracting and poorly written.
The quality of acting takes a dive pretty early on, too...
from a narrative standpoint, i thought the human element was alright, and was in many ways what the transformers movies should have been
the problem with the human element is that they are virtually worthless and will not stop fucking themselves over
my problem with pacific rim at was that at one point i wished all the human characters would just go away so i could watch more monsters fighting
but yeh this sounds ok to me, ill probably go see reptar returns sometime this week then
The only parts I liked about Pacific Rim were the human elements, actually. The best part about my viewing of Godzilla was, when Ken Watanabe was explaining his theories about the titular creature, and says "We call him...
Godzilla," in this really dramatic tone, this girl in the back of the audience gasped really loudly. That made my week.

Everyone in the theatre started snickering. I know it's the original name in Japan, but it was hard not to smile hearing him say Gojira.
I didn't even notice he said the original pronunciation.
Also yeah the original 1954 Honda version is still the only version worth watching. The ticket-taker where I saw it had such a hard on for the SFX he was like "Yeah the director really did his research the monster looks amazing it's not just some guy in a suit," and I was like gee show some respect but I didn't actually say that because I was too scared.
i liked the film. i did not really give a shit about the human characters except for bryan cranston and ken watanabe's character, but it didn't bother me too much because they didn't spend a lot of time showing mc on the phone with his crying wife and useless son, much unlike many disaster films that completely fail at creating empathy for some generic american family (world war z comes to mind, my god that movie pissed me off). but they killed bryan cranston off early and ken didn't get a whole lot of screentime, and the writing was average, so that was probably the weakest part of the movie.
the major complaint i keep hearing is that godzilla isn't in the movie enough, or that it took too long for him to show up. which is funny because modern audiences get their faces stuffed with constant headache-inducing action in an era where filmmakers like james cameron and michael bay are shoving hours of mindless drivel and cgi down our throats. and even though those films are financial successes, a majority of audiences complain about action being overdone to the point where it becomes boring. a great recent example of this is man of steel. the entire 3rd act of the film is superman fighting, and halfway through it you just don't give a shit anymore and want it to be over. the fight - and entire movie - was spoiled because of how long it went on.

maybe they teased godzilla a little too much, but i think he got the perfect amount of screentime. it does leave you wanting more, and really it should. every moment that he was on screen was done masterfully in every element. you could tell the creators have a lot of respect for godzilla. i got a kick out of how they ended it as well.
i look forward to the sequels Edwards wants to make. he has been very receptive to the fans and treats the genre with an immense amount of respect. i think he did an excellent job on this film. it easily ranks amongst one of the best godzilla films, and does everything right that the 1998 american godzilla did wrong.
pacific rimjob, haha

godzilla more like shodzilla
thats a lie the movie was decent
It was okay, kind of boring. Godzilla 2000 is still the best as far as remakes go.

i saw this movie last week with someone and it was shit
godzilla was so melodramatic falling down slowmo all the time and giving cranstons son 'the look'
it reminded me of that pokemon movie with the legendary birds
1 1/2 stars

godzilla is large. while he would fall just as fast as anything else, it takes him longer to displace his mass than something smaller. and we have to see him from a distance to get his scale, which would make this effect stronger. he would appear to fall slowly in real life as well. maybe not as slow as in the film, but it would look stupid if he fell quickly.

yeah but then he decided to ignore physics and slap that insect thing REALLY FAST with his tail in that one shot. guess he was just moving slowmo on purpose that whole time
and dont tell me you didnt notice those 3 or 4 times where godzilla fell down and gave soldier son ONE LAST LOOK before he 'died' as if he failed him or something
melodramatic crap movie went to shit after cranston died and ken watanabe couldnt save it with the same intense stare throughout the rest of the movie 0.83 stars
that being said i do recommend it if you like to laugh at bad movies B)
godzilla's tail has less mass displacement than his entire body. his tail was also extremely close to the camera. physics isn't playing as much of a role in this as gravity and simple visual perception rules are. that being said, it is a movie, and vfx animators have to kind of use their imagination since godzilla doesn't exist.
i do recall one scene where godzilla saw cranston jr after he had already fallen and then a bunch of dust and debris obscured his head and i didn't find it particularly melodramatic. i'm actually curious why you thought it was melodramatic because nothing melodramatic happened. the scene was shot, in my opinion, to show that godzilla doesn't give a fuck about the fact that there are humans all around him. there wasn't any swelling of music, there wasn't even much sound in that scene. it would have been melodramatic if godzilla had shed a tear and a sad orchestra came in or something to that effect. but nothing like that happened.
alright before i get myself trapped into a rtil debate to the death and ten more physics lessons im just gonna nitpick these things and then leave 5ever

sort of. gravity plays a role in modern newtonian physics. but we're
only talking about gravity, here. it's like having a discussion about silicon and saying we're talking about computers.
and motion parallax has nothing to do with physics. it's a byproduct of depth perception in stereoscopic vision.

he deserved more screentime, he was great in the film. kudos to him for sticking to his guns
I don't see why some people (http://www.thebackalleys.com/forum/profile/basketweaver/) don't just go watch an Ingmar Bergman movie if they're looking for artistic/literary merit. I liked Pacific Rim because it made me laugh and didn't take itself seriously for an effects driven blockbuster, which movies like Godzilla and The Hobbit didn't do.
If you're looking for a more profound encounter with cinema, Barnes & Noble is having their July sale of Criterion movies for 50% off, because you probably won't find an experience like that at a cineplex. Honda's original 1954 movie (and ensuing series to a lesser extent) is still the only version with cultural/aesthetic value. Maybe 2000 as well but that's debatable.
Fight me nerd.
pacific rim was a comedy? it didn't make me laugh once. i rolled my eyes quite a bit though
I found it pretty wink wink nudge nudge.
Could be denial.
