These threads work kinda like sketchbook threads right?
also, please tear me a new one so I can learn, gomen.
updates on saturdays
I don't know much about art, but I can say this:
you picked an interesting shot, and took some risks, which is cool. but you should keep practicing that - I mostly like the man in the background's shape, but it seems a bit rigid, like you were referencing a model too heavily.
the background seems way too rushed, although it does convey depth and that they're in a cave bein' all moody next to the entrance.
what mostly bothers me about this picture is the man in the foreground's face. the shape of his head, his nose, and the position of his ear seem way off. his chest region also looks weirdly puffy.
please keep posting though, we want to see more sketches - and don't hesitate to show finished artwork! sometimes these threads are like sketchbooks, sometimes they're like "hey guys here's the thing I've recently put on my portfolio".
sketches should hope to convey an image or idea in a concise and understandable fashion
theres a lot of unnecessary lines there that dont really lend themselves to anything. instead of adding to the image they take away by just looking scribbly
this image makes me think you do life drawing work, WHICH IS GREAT DO THAT AND POST IT!!!!!!
Thanks for those critiques so far, this was all from imagination with no reference save the tree bark and was supposed to be a person standing on a tree branch in a forest, with a 20m giant in the background, but with what flash said, it looks like I have a lot to learn about composition.
i would echo what i've read so far but my main concern is that your anatomy and construction is feeling a little flat. i know that you've told me on irc you've been looking into a lot of anatomy and drawing books and that is great. the more information you can feed your brain about it and apply it the better you'll be able to improve. it will take a long time but eventually your hand will start to memorize the way every stroke should go. there are also lots of great references on these two tumblrs: http://learninganatomy.tumblr.com/archive (http://learninganatomy.tumblr.com/archive) http://fucktonofanatomyreferencesreborn.tumblr.com/archive (http://fucktonofanatomyreferencesreborn.tumblr.com/archive) which you can use for reference, and if you'd like to practice life drawing there are a ton of great nude figures on deviantart as well as this ife drawing practice session app (http://artists.pixelovely.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing/) i may have already linked you.
the human body is a very challenging subject so it's also ok to focus on one piece of it at a time . liked doing many studies on just heads, faces, or hands. etc
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fth07.deviantart.net%2Ffs70%2FPRE%2Fi%2F2014%2F110%2Fd%2F1%2F4_19_sketch_by_riotweekend-d7f7wck.jpg&hash=79d9038ecc4d2c63812a80da02b8853409fa8a40)
I went full hatch...
yes you did. that was very naughty of you
when hatching, try to keep all the lines moving in the same direction, and at an angle where they compliment the geometry of what they're on. you want to use hatching not just to shade, but to imply volume as well
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thebackalleys.com%2Fdump%2Ffiles%2F3048%2F596aE1_hatch.png&hash=bf60c1aaf04b3156f2aad57ae7a2521c0cb02871)
using hatching to imply movement can be pretty good too, but yeh again i think its a case of unnecessary lines here just distracting from things
nice eyes tho
so they need to flow and accentuate? yes sensei *bow*
Look up reference for crosshatching if it's a style you'd like to explore some more. A good understanding of light and shadow is needed to figure out where you want to build up the darker areas with more concentrated strokes.
For now I think you should focus mainly on your anatomy before giving your drawings too much "flair".
ALRIGHT MOTHAFUCKAS, ITS THE ONE YEAR DRAWERVERSARY.
*required listening for this post Neat Beats - I hope I think of bike riding when I'm dying (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VD8mjrq4vjw#) *
so one year ago, Im watching lets go to my house - timelapse painting by rtil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBgiHCC6RXU#) feeling kinda bored, feeling kinda useless, when I decide fuck it, I'm going to draw everyday until I get good, Because I knew I had the power to draw kawaii ass bitches, and it couldn't be that bad right?
Here's my first night's work
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fth02.deviantart.net%2Ffs71%2FPRE%2Fi%2F2014%2F111%2F5%2F8%2Ffirst_day_drawing_by_riotweekend-d7fhlpg.jpg&hash=2259c062a8745e673a73fb04c2632773bd6643bd)
At first shit sucked because I had no direction, and I spent a lot of time copying snippets of stylized drawings, then I found ctrlpaint and proko, which I promptly decided to ignore, and continued to draw kawaii ass eyes.
In about January I really buckled down and started to do figure drawing and drawing from still frames, throw in a lot of gesture and loomis and here I am today.
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fth07.deviantart.net%2Ffs70%2FPRE%2Fi%2F2014%2F111%2F4%2Fe%2F1_year_drawerversary_by_riotweekend-d7fhlxb.jpg&hash=118aadc5e6143617a70e357d6b3bcba0dd87991c)
And here's hoping to many more drawerversarys, maybe Ill draw potato licking sasha next time haha.
thanks to rtil for dat dere drawing motivation and the pic suggestion.
Still wish I could find new hope by magic sword on youtube tho...
rofl mikasa looks terrifying. happy drawversary

I did, I tried a thing and I did the deed.
I really like the fact that you are deviating from the common pattern. A lot of your ideas and compositions are highly dynamic, which is something I price much more over actual execution. The execution value is certainly not the best, but you are slowly heading in the right direction (and there are a bunch of people that can help you in case you deviate too much). What I can see is that you draw rather quickly, which is not a bad thing at all, as working too much on the same thing gets you nowhere good. However, in this case, I am afraid that this might be a bit too quickly. Too hastily done.
I mean, you definitely could fill out the void with a more fulfilling amount of darkness than just a few light strokes of the pencil. Though I believe white void wouldn't work that badly either. In either case, the immense light reflected from a planet causes the rest of the universe to go completely dim, where not a single star can be seen, so in either case you get a pitch-black void. As for the shadow on the planet, it needs to be uniform. A transition from the light side to the dark sides rarely takes more than five kilometres, obviously depending on how large the celestial body is, but that really is of zero significance if viewed from afar.
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fapod.nasa.gov%2Fapod%2Fimage%2F0704%2Fio_walkerNH520.jpg&hash=ab3dd962122a08dab70888bd750c62a9a99826b8)
Also, don't take this the wrong way at all, but I am not entirely sure what the object in the lower right is supposed to represent: some kind of station or a ship cockpit that reflects the surroundings? There seems to be vague detail in all this and makes identifying items hard. You just need to do more decisive strokes and plan beforehand what you want to do, naturally using rough sketches and perhaps even take a sheet of paper to make a draft to make sure it will look good before wasting your eraser rubber on removing something that didn't look good to begin with. The hardest part of designing anything for any scenery is making up some architecture. For any starting artists and designers, they will use references from all over the Internet to get themselves an idea of what exactly they want to do - because it's hard to imagine some 'typical science-fiction catwalks' (just as an example) if you've never done them. However, as you do something more and more, you will be less and less dependent on outside references and your mind will start imagining things it never has done before. Sometimes maybe really elaborate things will reveal themselves to you in your daydreams, and in some cases even dreams.
Just keep doing what you do.
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffc07.deviantart.net%2Ffs70%2Fi%2F2014%2F130%2F5%2F8%2Fsome_screenshot_studies_by_riotweekend-d7ht8o4.jpg&hash=7914603012ec480b1329a6f191037023906d29ee)
gotta make them shading gains.
i think using that single tone to shade instead of hatching will be good for you for the time being. it will force you to think in shapes and dark and light.
That's an awful lot of improvement.
Here's some stuff from last night that was not as shit as the other stuff I've been doing for the past weeks:
gestures from imagination

All art dedicated to skack.
its decent i guess
your figures are kind of rubbery. the joints need more definition. especially when force is being pushed down on a joint, you need to get that sense of weight that the arm or leg is holding up. i also am not very fond of those strange nubs you are drawing as hands. if you want to avoid drawing all the fingers at the very least draw the index finger. the other 3 fingers can meld together and you can get away with it if it's quick.
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffc01.deviantart.net%2Ffs71%2Fi%2F2014%2F158%2Ff%2F7%2Fbreaking_in_graphics_tab_by_riotweekend-d7ld4pe.jpg&hash=d69ec91641556697ce8add58d2e17693225c44f6)
I haven't touched a tablet in a year, what is this.
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffc01.deviantart.net%2Ffs70%2Ff%2F2014%2F159%2Ff%2Fe%2F6814_by_riotweekend-d7lhvwh.jpg&hash=3fd387bdb2ec3c882073541b676e42145cca5c4f)
skillz when?
i think you should hold off on coloring for a while until you get solid drawing skills down. or, at the very least, use solid blocks of color instead of weird blobs and soft airbrushes. and don't use grays and blacks to shade. it makes colors muddy
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffc05.deviantart.net%2Ffs70%2Ff%2F2014%2F173%2F5%2F5%2Fgirl_with_a_mask_by_riotweekend-d7njafl.jpg&hash=723d0d60ee115ef0a50720c5aa861de2ad17a5d9)
took about 2 hours, trying to utilize what i've been working on in my sketchbooks.
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffc06.deviantart.net%2Ffs71%2Ff%2F2014%2F174%2F9%2Ff%2F62314_by_riotweekend-d7noycl.jpg&hash=4f51437da9dec933496024587685275100ce1323)
and he said "thou shalt reap the fields for their still-lifes, and thou shalt bask in the knowledge and experience of completing them".
aside from the fact that this drawing is kinda scrappy, it's not bad. however, don't forget about bounce light underneath the figure here. the darkest part of the shading on the apple would be where the shadow begins as the main light source fades. then, the reflections from the surface would bounce onto the bottom of the apple. so the further down you go on the shadow, the lighter it actually gets. not by much, but the subtle change will make a big difference.
Here's a few studies I've done recently:

i like the top one a lot better than the bottom one. you need some contrast between sharp and blurry though, everything is blurry in these pics.

still, why would you even make that your icon if you made it yourself.

i'm still laughing at the tree. it looks like it was drawn by a 5 year old. mostly because the perspective in this piece is very good, so it makes the bad tree look even worse. :wile:

This image brought to you by procrastination, 1 down, 19 more to go.
i know you've been looking at other people doing these studies but i don't think you're ready for this level of detail yet. you're blocking in colors but it doesn't seem like you actually understand why. a lot of the form is lost in your version. you should at least block it in with linework first before you go to toning. but again, this subject matter is way beyond your abilities at the moment. there's still a lot of things about basic anatomy and construction you need to learn before you can approach these studies properly.
this is a joke right

also, if you have any feedback on how I can go about doing faces better, gib advices plox
looks like you're starting to get the hang of structure, but there's still a lot of that blobiness from your earlier work. keep focusing on interlocking shapes and geometry in the skeletal system behind the skin, you'll get there

you also have your own hand as reference which is convenient
i think you still got better tho
some of those bodies look neat
Some decent life drawings pal! The contours are my favorites. Some of them are a bit "scratchy" though. You need to have confidence in your linework! It will take time and practice, but try to create lines in one, fell swoop instead of small, numerous linestrokes. Me and my brother both used to have that problem when drawing and it took a lot of work to overcome. However, you might be able to make it work stylistically. You would just have to be very aware of how and where you use that technique. I would recommend breaking the habit first and then maybe revisiting it. Just a thought!
Also yea hands are always a good time. There's like 50 different parts to em and each of em need perspective to be acknowledged. Feet are also underestimated in their difficulty I feel.
NEW SKETCHES TIME

booberidoos, how do they work? oh and faces too, if you look hard enough, in one of these it says "soup, save me!"
you're improving sometimes on structure and anatomy, but some of these are really shaky and weird, too. especially the 5th one down. but for the most part you're showing signs of improvement. i think you'll get the hang of it with more practice.
faces at a scale that small can be tricky. don't bother with adding the entire shape of the eyes, you can get away with just doing the upper eyelid and the pupil from that distance. the nose doesn't need more than the tip and maybe some light shading to indicate the ridge and the nostril area. you have the right idea with the mouth.
watch your proportions as you go down the figure. your body sizes are fluctuating too much.
legs are looking better, the practice is paying off. i might add more definition around the knee area to give a stronger sense of its role as the fulcrum.
i think that one of the problems is the linework is so uhh..scrappy and tentative
basically you kind of put off the viewer instantly
tentative? I totes plan these out with undersketches tho, and by shaky, It believe you mean the chicken scratch? It's a problem I'm working on.
As for the body type fluctuations, I'm trying out a bunch of different body types instead of getting stuck on just one, or trying to.
And on them being shaky and weird, yeah I do see that, most of it is trying to salvage the sketch if I see a mistake; would you suggest I work on line weight?
kk, will work on these
Here's a bunch of stuff from my studies, I do an hour of them everyday. The studies are 30 secs per img
the single apple was the first thing I painted and clocked in at 25 mins
the orange took about 15
the two apples was about 1 hour and 15 minutes
the pear was 35

honest crits pls
I'm worried about my edge control and texture, I also know that the pinky is a bit off and the nail rendering leaves much to desire.
interesting choice of study.. not the best photo imo. looking at this i feel you're more copying the shapes of color you see in the painting without understanding the actual form of the hand. i would much rather see you do a line study of this with some hatching to accentuate the volume. basically, this painting just shows me that you might be jumping the gun painting more advanced things (and in my opinion a hand is a lot more complex than a piece of fruit). and your earlier sketches of hands are pretty blobby and unrefined. if you can't draw a hand, you can't paint one yet.
Too lazy to collage together the pics out of my sketchbook now but have this

Here's to many more
P.S. Godamnit why do all these rough spots show up AFTER I post it
AYYYYYYYYYYYY LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GUESS WHO'S FUCKING BACK TO UPLOAD SOME SHIZ
The following are drawing from my Drawing class, they're all in chronological order with about a week between them, 3 out of the 4 were featured in the gallery hall except for the bottom one.

And these here are cherrypicked pages from my sketchbook, also in chronological order

noticings from senpais?!?!?!?!?!?!
i see some small flashes of brilliance in a lot of stil very messy and shaky/scratchy sketches. you seem to have momentary grasps on construction and anatomy and then other drawings are very jello-y and wobbly and express a lack of confidence to me. the last shadow study piece in charcoal with the stones is quite good.
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FpG603HN.png&hash=dd0141c453e76dba7c0021140ded0c1b62880a3d) this part of this girls' body is good and demonstrates understanding of volume by blocking in shadow

but this

is more of what i see, and i think this is not good. too scribbly, total lack of direction and seems to lack the understanding of anatomy.
this doesn't mean that you don't understand anatomy, you are going to make bad drawings sometimes, and you will no matter how good you get. but you'll make them less often as you improve. i really think you should focus on making less strokes and not try to do any shading until after you've got the silhouette and construction down. you might also not always be ready for freeform drawing of figures withoutdoing some kidn of skeletal or structural underlay first, as some of the more challenging poses you've attempted to draw come off a lot more amateurish than some of your stronger pieces, which tend to be profile or head on.

Only halfway there but I'm also pretty proud of this as well
I'm really happy to share this with yall, tell me what yall think (and/or give criticism)
i like the progression on the paintings
your sketches are loose but maybe a little too loose, i still feel like many of your forms and figures lake cohesion. i also still see too many lines where there should be one, but you're doing it less often now so there is improvement there. i think the area that needs the most work is your facial anatomy
i think its a huge step forward honestly
especially if you juxtapose this with your 2014 drawings
so nice job i made maybe 6 bad doodles in less than 2 hours between february and july (The perfect example to follow), its nice seeing someone being actually productive and disciplined
rather good stuff esp the military paintings
WHO'S READY FOR SKETCHES
So for this dump I went through about 340 pages of my last 3+current sketchbook, got 116 images, then whittled down that number to 16 for a broad representation of my progress since august.
**edit**
the 4th and 5th from the bottom should say 12/december instead of 9/september

Painting dump SOON(tm)
some of these are quite good, especially as you get closer to the bottom. i like that you are using pen, but one thing i'd like to see is for you to take some of these sketches to the next step. they're very lightly penned in, it would be cool to see you add more definition, maybe even some shading. just to see what you can do with a traditional medium. or if you're scared of ruining them use them as a base for a painting. here's some of my favorites:

one thing i would watch out for though is your proportions as you travel down the body. your heads are often far too small in comparison to the rest of the figure.

I also got some stuff from my school sketchbook I'll upload if anyone wants to see it (hint: you do)
very nice draw's
some good stuff in here, would like to see some of these taken to another level of refinement. they're all pretty much as loose and sketchy as your last dump. i'd like to see what you could do spending 20-30 mins on a still life figure

Oh hey a thing from summer 2014, how does it hold up to a thing from fall 2015?

Quick 4 hour study of Dilbertman
I have grown stronger
its a good study, some nice warm tones and good depth and structure on the face
to play devils advocate, it does look a little fuzzy or hazy. Vaseline Dilbertman. maybe try blocking in the tones in very sharp definite shapes before working into the piece / blending / rendering ect to see how that turns out.
Yeah I noticed when I looked at it after I woke up this morning, I'm going to do a bunch more and try to fix out this hazy/floaty rendering problem I have
in 4 hours, eh

This one was about 6 hours, I thought it'd be done around 3 but then I got into minutia, I feel really proud of the bottom/side of the nose and the blue highlighted side in this one

Neither are finished because I was kinda dragging with the girl study so I jumped over to that portrait, I'll finish them at some point
I believe it's also worthy of note that the girl study got me my first multi-stream invite which turned out to be an invite to a collection of furry BDSM streamers
never again

I did these to procrastinate on two other full color body studies I have going right now but to also test out full opacity painting/underpaintings and some weird rendering shit I saw a chinese guy on art station do

I've started a discord focusing on mainly on Design and art fundamentals, mostly as a way to get in touch with other people that
a) want to git really good
and
b) really enjoy concepts and ideation and want to be able to better express themselves and communicate their thoughts and ideas on paper
It's going to be the greatest, wish me luck
Great stuff, I could definitely learn a lot about lighting and shading from you.
