i actually find it really weird that they're making it an anime, it doesn't seem like something that'd be as good in anime form :c but i'll still watch it
aww yiss finally
THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE WE MADE IT HAPPEN
by we I mean /a/
But mostly /v/.
Also Shin Oonuma is directing it so it will definitely be #soft.
I really hope they manage to do a good job on it, I can see it turning out to be some otaku pandering shit with constant shout outs to touhou or whatever.
i still cannot wait
summer release then.. that kind of came out of nowhere. unless i skipped over it somehow
it does seem like there's the potential to take it tons of different ways, good aaand bad

About time for a preview!
So... where shall I start... from what I've read so far (manga wise) this is a pretty unconventional and funny series with a lot of clever humor and sometimes a strangely enormous amount of recognition value. The kind of stuff that can be really tough to translate from manga into anime. But visually, they pretty much hit the nail on the head. Depending on how well the direction is and on how accurately manage to recreate the same wonderfully awkward experience that the (mostly western) fans love it for, this will be a hit or miss. And the border between success and failure will be quite slim this time, as most people acquainted with the series already have their own concept of the main character.
A major problem in this case will be that most of the text in this show is either monologue of thought process, and that might be tough to translate without making it lose its charm... we will see...

KUURUUUUUUUUUU
Episode 1 (http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=view&tid=450783)
that was pretty good
Yupp, that was a pretty good start for an adaptation. They actually managed to convey the impressions from the manga quite well and the result is pretty entertaining up to now and considering that the manga didn't get dull for me either, this might actually become a pretty good show.
So far, they have covered 3 chapters of the manga in one episode and the anime appears to be very close to the original. The pace seems all right and leaves room to create a certain cohesion between the otherwise separate stories of the manga. It's kinda weird to know beforehand that this will be one of the animes with next to no character development, but I guess that's just what makes watamote's charm. I'm pretty curious on how far they will get.
i really liked that first episode. really funny and a good approach to a common subject, i can see why people like this story.
As much as I love the manga I was expecting the anime to be kind of meh but it was actually pretty good. Nothing amazing, but worth watching.

also good yep
Episode 3 (http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=view&tid=455511#ws)
tomoko feels like a genuine character. whoever writes this stuff had to have lived it. she reminds me of my middle school and about half of my high school years, including the cynicism, which stayed with me up to today. and that's why her crippling shyness and perception of people in general is so funny to me. even though they dissolve in to comedic situations, i like the brief touching moments as well. i haven't laughed this much at an anime since season 4 of minami-ke. hope it continues to be this good

It's great to see an anime with an "everyman" type character, especially one that is relatable. I just finished the first episode and I can't wait to see the rest.
That ending is funny and painfully cute.
glad you like it! episode 4 (http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=view&tid=457907) out now
just saw up till ep4 today, love it
i found it extremely watchable, the funny bits are actually funny, and its surprisingly endearing
and wowoww the intentionally awkward scenes are truly cringe inducing

final scene of ep4 was art
watching ep4 now, this show is awesome. it's almost constantly depressing but then it hits you with a hilarious scene. love it
episode 5 (http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=view&tid=460338)
still the greatest anime of all time
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.minus.com%2FiEjVT4Qxp2Kxn.gif&hash=fd243fa96bba498efc539866c163773d2b3df79c)
this episode was pretty meta and introspective. i didn't catch some of the references near the end. i could tell they were parodying something but i don't know what.
Even the ending was worthy of a few "..huh?" on ep 5.
apparently the ending is a reference to this (minus the ahegao face)
まんが日本昔ばなし エンディング (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mv8NEA6-gRY#)
ep 6 (http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=462668)
Even though they to take their time for the punchlines (just as the manga itself), they just manage to execute it to wonderfully. I really love the style of this studio. Most of the stylistic devices used in some scenes are pretty damn clever and so are most of the cuts/transitions to the subsequent scenes after the spaghetti moments. Oh, and they actually manage to maintain this thin line of love/pity and despite that you feel for the main character.
I feel kinda bad for already having read a major part of the manga and already knowing the punchlines of each story, but the way they managed to adapt it really makes up for it. Another nice aspect of the show is how they manage to play with her emotions and interact her thoughts. Despite completely knowing what she thinks, it is still pretty hard to analyze her actual feelings (especially at the end of each episode). This show is a mixture of extremely sadistic comedy on a social level and very subtle drama and one of the few that actually make me feel a bit sorry for the main character.
The firework in the end was a pretty nice way to conclude the episode and I guess the tune in the background was some Miku song. If that's not a tba bonus, I don't know... In any case, this show already is a piece of cult for me and considering the clever execution and the many details and references built in by the animators and directors, it should become a cult show in general. Unfortunately, I am not quite sure whether or not it has the same success in Japan... Watamote seems to be more of an oversees thing.
Also thanks for posting that video! I was wondering what kind of reference the ending of ep5 might have been.

Dat Mokocchi
I can't believe it's over already...
The initial hype kinda died down after the first half of the show and, admittedly, the first episodes were better than the last ones in my opinion but the show was nonetheless always entertaining. It's a bit sad to see so many people bitching about how little character development it had, considering that just that is the point of the entire story. Thus, I think they have managed to come up with a charming conclusion for the animated series.
Predicted sales are low and unfortunately there probably won't be a second season, which is a bit sad since this anime has done something that no only a others few have attempted before. But while most of the others actually try to give their main character somewhat of a development and a more or less positive ending, Tomoko's story is constantly a mixture of sadistic comedy and depression. For anyone who liked this show and wants more, I can only recommend the Anime adaptation of Welcome to the NHK, which is similarly depressing and realistic and deals with the same kind of shut-in/sociall awkward protagonist but has a bit more development and variety.
In any case, I will miss the Watamote Anime and I will definitely continue the manga now (which I have put on hold-on a couple of months ago).
Mokocchi is my waifu!

good show thumbs up
yeah i did like the original ending. she finally realized what everyone was waiting for her to realize. don't think there will ever be another season but i guess i can live with that. it would basically be more of the same stuff anyway since she never changes much.
last episode was great, dat running scene
overall I was surprised with how good the anime turned out

Oh I forgot about this thread. Yeah this show was fun. The direction was really impressive given the budget, and somehow Oonuma managed to make the anime even crueler than the source material, which is an accomplishment if you ask me, though half of the credit probably belongs to Kitta Izumi. Anyway yeah they're both great and I urge everyone to watch their other stuff if you haven't.

she finally realized what everyone was waiting for her to realize.
I think I know what you're getting at but would you care to elaborate? You mean that it was her fault she wasn't popular? Her learning to accept the status quo? Coming to terms with her repressed lesbianism?
Anyway:

that it doesn't matter that she's not popular. she said at the very end, after looking at the definition of an unpopular girl: "seriously, it doesn't even matter". it's not so much a coming to terms as it is accepting herself and giving up on trying so badly to emulate whatever she thinks she needs to act like to be popular. i think she also realized that being popular doesn't matter, either.
I should probably watch it again because my interpretation of that line was much more nihilistic.
Perhaps the influx of tears was clouding my vision.
i thought it was very light-hearted because she seemed relieved and happy in that scene. when she laughed i hadn't heard her laugh like that before. i suppose it could go either way, but that's just how i interpret that scene.
Wow yeah it's amazing how different that scene seems now. I guess with the rest of the show being so cathartic I didn't really pick up on that.
I'm not sure if I like it more now. Overcoming an ideal is one thing, but transcending loneliness and social anxiety I don't think is so easy. Anyway I won't ruin it for everyone else by reading too much into it. Plus, I think we all know we all know what the true ending (http://www.thebackalleys.com/dump/files/1530/651Ar_watamote_true_ending.jpg) really looks like (http://www.thebackalleys.com/dump/files/1530/812St6_it%27s_you_guys%27_fault_i%27m_disemboweled.jpg).
she still has her demons to deal with, but i think she will approach it in a more healthier way from now on (in some alternate, non-existent universe where season 2 is made)
That's a nice thought.

I've been thinking that for quite a while now... if they are clever, there might be an attemt like that in the near future. The franchise obviously has most of its fans overseas and even though I am not sure how much support it will get it would be worth a try...
Japs apparently hated it for some reason, which is why you can find a lot of gore and scat shit online. Might have had too much recognition value for them to handle. I think it is amazing how something produced in their own country and in their language has most of its supporters abroad.
the only instance i can think of something similar happening is starcraft/starcraft 2 being made in the united states but finding more success in korea. more americans play it, but not per capita.

I can name a few other anime that were more popular in the West than Japan.
Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Samurai Champloo; yes, but these weren't totally refused/hated by the Japanese audiences.

it was cute, i liked the story of the episode. they also put in a tiny hint at a 2nd season, but they were probably just fucking around
