Pacific Rim Official Wondercon Trailer (2013) - Guillermo del Toro Movie HD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef6vQBGqLW8#ws)

So Yea or Nay?

It's giant robots and monsters, I dunno if I need to say much more.

I have a hard time imagining this will be good but i liked the hellboy movies. Hopefully there is a lot more to this movie than what they show in the trailer.

Wow this looks complete original and not at all like anything else that came out in the last 10 years.

Oh wait just kidding. All big budget CGI monster/alien/robot/explosion movies look the same now.

Pacific Rim - Training Day with Jesse Cox, Dodger, Huskystarcraft, Totalbiscuit, and the GameGrumps (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iw8XQ3vdW_4#ws)

not actually part of the main film but quite funny. Del Torro was there when they presented the script and he apparently loved it.

Holy shit! I watched the original/first one at a friends place yesterday and we were constantly ranting about how bad it was. Good times...
I have no idea why anyone would want to make a remake of that film...

Pacific Rim isn't a remake of anything (??)

Well, ye, fuck, my bad.

My pal told me that he confused it for the other one and figured it was an earlier version, as the 'special effects' were pretty fucking 70's

a film that promises kaiju and robots beating each other to death is way past cool and ive been super hyped for a while now

i just hope there isn't an overly involved plot. i guess ill find out soon enough.

the concept for this movie seems so dumb. i can't imagine it would be good but apparently its not terrible?

i think that it is getting decent reviews because it delivers on its simple premise without trying to take itself too seriously, which too many movies with dumb plots attempt to do these days.

This movie is legitimately good

The visual effects, as expected, are amazing

The characters are a little flat, but the storytelling in this movie is quite good. They do a really good job at capturing how powerful the Kaiju are and they do a really good job with showing what it takes for people to take them down. And while the movie is silly in some regards, the action and violence in it felt very believable and had a lot of impact.

But seriously, I've seen this twice now and I enjoyed it very much both times!

It was like that before the movie came out, actually. I've never seen so many people be hyped for an original movie (i.e. not a sequel or franchise).

Pacific Rim and Transformers have not a single thing in common aside from both being mechanical. Pacific Rim is like a Power Rangers/Kaiju movie (like Godzilla vs. x). Transformers is basically a shit movie banking on a good franchise; the only thing that made Transformers popular is big CGI and nostalgia. So basically it's just another Michael Bay movie.

Saw it opening night. Best anime I've seen in theaters in a while.

The fight sequences were the mostly boring to me, but I guess I'm just not used to them as I don't watch a lot of action movies. The little details that proved del Toro the production team were having fun are what made this movie for me. For instance:
children's toys being designed in the Kaiju's likeness, the Jaeger fist smashing through the building and hitting the Newton's Cradle, the bits of character development in the neural handshake sequences, all the tongue in cheek dialogue, etc.
That's not to say I didn't have problems with the script. For instance:
the villains were really hackneyed and undeveloped. For such a, dare I say topical film (what with the neuroscientific elements and self-aware use of cliches) I felt the villains could have been more interesting. The main characters were purely functional, and I had no problem with that, but when you have giant dinosaur clones attacking Earth, you should have a better reason than "Aliens," at least in my opinion. I have ideas as to how this could have been done, but I don't want to waste anyone's time unless they actually want to discuss it.
As rtil said, it's basically a self-concious high budget action flick that doesn't take itself seriously at all. I'd really like to see del Toro direct more films like Chronos, Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth, but seeing his take on Hollywood mech ripoffs was well worth the 10 bucks. It was also very pretty, and this is coming from someone who loathed The Hobbit and is rarely impressed by CGI in movies.

good lord what in the world? Pacific Rimjob was fucking awful. It was easily a concept that had potential just from the trailer alone, but it instead ended up being absolute ass and defied my expectations in the worst ways possible. The action sequences were fine, but anyone who says that they enjoyed this pathetic piece of storytelling garbage should go see their local psychiatrist immediately to receive their diagnosis of having awful tastes.

I'll put important sentences in spoiler tags, but this movie was so devoid of any meaningful story that reading the spoilers will leave your non-enjoyment of this movie unaffected.

From the trailer: "We were against tough monsters, so we created a monster of our own!!! A robot that takes two people!!! These two people share one brain!! How fascinating!!"

WTF? Why would you say that the mecha was a monster when you didn't explore that theme at all? I like how the "two-people-share-one-mind" concept was so hyped up in the trailer and then played literally no role on the movie. All of the action scenes could have been done with one pilot. "Oh, but BasketWeaver, the two pilots were necessary in order to put the main girl and main guy together!" YEAH, except there's literally no chemistry between them at all and the girl DOESN'T EVEN PLAY A ROLE IN THE COMBAT! The only time she contributes something meaningful is in one of the most retarded scenes in the movie where
their mecha suit is being lifted to the sky by a giant flying alien. The man says "Oh no, we are out of weapons." The girl says, "NO, we still have one last weapon up our sleeve!" She presses some secret buttons and enters a code, and on the screen it says: "Now initializing SWORD." Yep, you heard me. They aren't using "The Sword". They aren't using "Top Secret Claymore xv4.56." They're using "Sword". And they swing the sword once and the monster dies in one hit? What the fuck? Did you really have to wait until you were up in fucking outer space before using that sword?"
The girl is literally deadweight in combat. She could have easily been a clerk or strategist who sends microphone messages to the main character and the movie would have been exactly the same.

And the main character would constantly spew retarded garbage out of his mouth like "oh man, I don't like using the drift device because I'm sharing my memories with you! OH GOD, THE MEMORIES!!!!" and then that's it. You thought that we would get to see into people's psyches and understand how they work, perhaps by watching their traumatic childhoods? NOPE. God fucking dammit, why would you even include human memory as a theme WHEN YOU AREN'T GOING TO FUCKING USE IT FOR STORYTELLING? That's like if I wrote a story about a man who transforms into a giant cockroach before going to bed at night, and then I don't even talk about how being a cockroach affects his life, thereby ignoring that element of the story completely. Fucking shitty writing.

We literally don't get to see any of the implications of this mind-sharing except for like one little scene which wasn't even good where
the japanese girl runs away from a monster as if that's supposed to be a traumatic memory. WTF? How is looking at a monster traumatizing? BOO HOO THE MONSTER MAKES LOUD NOISES. You're going to fight them already so doesn't that imply you've already gotten over it? What the fuck? I understand that they implied that the monsters killed the girl's family but how about showing THAT on the screen instead? You expect me to believe that flashback scene was supposed to be meaningful?
And when
the main character's brother dies, the main character goes all "DUDE, when he died, I could feel his fear! I could feel his pain! I could feel being eaten alive!" What the fuck? That's not how you write a fucking movie, jackass. How about you show us a cinematic of being eaten alive instead of having us listen to this moron talk about his shitty feelings towards a character we don't even know?
By the way, the main character was a fucking awful actor.

There was also no character development all, which is surprising since there was a good 30-minute stretch of the movie where there was literally no action at all. Oh, look at us, we're just chilling in the barracks and socializing, it's like we're in a slice-of-life show, except wait, you still don't know ANYTHING about our personalities!! and I like the part where the Marshall says
Yes, it turns out that I was the one who acted as a father figure to the japanese girl, except wait, I will explain literally nothing about that. I will cry when the japanese girl is in trouble, but I will literally not explain any of my personal feelings because that's the kind of guy I am. Boy, what a convenient line to write!
When random characters just die it's so retarded because you literally have no reason to care about them.

Also, I get how they included the Japanese girl as a nod to the mecha genre and godzilla, but the fact that she's Japanese is literally not relevant for the entirety of the movie. She just speaks in unrealistically eloquent Engrish and sometimes babbles in Japanese. Wow, thanks guys, I'm so culturally enriched by watching this movie. Just have the girl be an english speaker, for christ's sake.

From a storytelling perspective, the most interesting parts of the movie were easily the science-fiction parts where they talk about the Kaiju brain.
When the nerd guy tapped into the kaiju brain, I thought I was going to see some funky artistic shit, especially when they talk about the Kaiju hivemind. Wow, this is exciting! I wonder where this hivemind tapping will take us! OH WAIT, that literally didn't affect the plot in any meaningful way at all! You just need to do what you were going to do already, except now you throw a Kaiju into the portal beforehand! Wow, what an exciting twist!
What a fucking let-down. When I went to see transformers, I at least knew that it was going to be nonsensical action sequences, but this movie was storytelling blue-balls. It could have been a good story. The trailers made it look semi-philosophical. The high ratings from friends who had seen it made it seem enjoyable. There were even parts in the movie where I thought, "This is it! It's happening! An actual good piece of story writing is about to unfurl before my eyes!" But did it happen? Fuck no. What a shitty movie. The most enjoyable part about it was trashing it with my friends after we saw it. Pacific Rimjob, 0/10.

TL;DR:
<basketWeaver> i'm pretty sure it was clear in the trailer
<basketWeaver> that they were going to have the two pilots theme
<basketWeaver> be significant to the storyline
<basketWeaver> even if we ignore all the other storywriting atrocities in that awful movie
<basketWeaver> The "two pilots working together as one brain"
<basketWeaver> was supposed to be important to the storyline
<basketWeaver> except the two pilots theme was not explored at all
<basketWeaver> it literally was not signifnicant to the story in any way
<basketWeaver> why not just have the movie be about one pilot? why are there two pilots? who the fuck knows

Wait, so you're saying... you didn't like it?

In that case you should probably stick to the kiddie pool, champ, because Pacific Rim is 2DEEP4U *punches baby*.
Seriously though, maybe I just enjoyed Pacific Rim because I hadn't seen the trailer, knew nothing about it going in and had pretty low expectations based on the Hobbit. Don't get me wrong, it is a bad movie, but, like Starship Troopers, it's also aware of its being bad (the writer practically parades his wacky self-awareness with CCJ's second line in the movie being "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.") This made it funny to me. I laughed internally more times at this movie and it's totally zany partial satirization (only enough to go unnoticed by Legendary) of the current film industry than any other I've seen in theaters for a long time. And then I cried, a lot.

And what better way is there to portray Japan's western relations than two mutually infatuated stereotypes who are physically attracted but lack chemistry completely and know almost nothing about the other?

Also, 10/10 if you were deliberately trying to trick me. I'm already wearing my dunce cap just in case.
This is one of the few movies I'd see again in 3D if 3D glasses didnt feel like shit when you already wear glasses.
How in 50 years nobody except whoever designed the 3DS has fixed this fucking problem is a goddamn mystery.

Pretty swell movie.
Its a shame they wont make toys of the monsters and only the robots.

i liked it, just a purely fun movie with a lot of cool visual symbolism and little unsaid things that i thought enriched the experience.
