Title: Skullgirls EVO Last Drive Jan 31st
Post by: rtil on January 28, 2013 07:46 AM
thursday is the last day for Skullgirls to beat Super smash brothers melee in the EVO 2013 donation drive. winner gets the 8th slot at EVO 2013, the largest offline fighting game championship in the world.

if you weren't there last thursday, we had about 2K people come in and we raised $15k. almost the entire VA cast of SG was there, and there was a story mode playthrough with the VA's and a tournament, as well as announcements from MikeZ and drawing requests for donations by Alex Ahad.

last week we were also behind by $9K, this time it's probably not going to be that big of a margin. so GET OUT YOUR FUCKING CHECKBOOK and get ready for HYPE. also all donations go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, over 90% of their donations go directly to the cause.

Wait, you like fighting games/follow the FGC? I went looking through the archives and thought the general consensus was that everyone here hated fighting games lol. What else do you play, besides SG?

i dont hate fighting games. i am just bad at them. i do not follow any tournaments though really, i know nothing about the pro scene. i follow SG because i worked on it and i'm friends with some of the people who worked on /created it.

I feel dumb for not knowing you worked on the game, but now that I think about it, the art style suits you.

It'd be really nice to see SG in the main lineup. Besides, SSBM already has the APEX tournaments. I'm surprised that you guys are in the lead though, from what I can tell hardly anyone's been playing it competitively since it took forever for patch 1.01 to come out. I played it for a couple weeks at my friend's house and never bought my own copy because we could never find anyone else to play against...plus I really wanted to focus on Marvel. I might pick it up for fun but I'm still learning Marvel, Street Fighter 4, Persona and Soul Calibur 5.

we're actually not in the lead , we're behind by about $500 as we speak. but the 31st is the last day and both ssbm and sg are holding a last minute stream to raise as much money as they can and see who can take the win. but i think skullgirls is going to win because we closed a $9K gap in 12 hours to raise $15K, and now they're only in the lead by half a grand. they also only raised $9K on their rally day. and both sides are equally juiced/broke. but sg has a lot of e-fame behind it, so it's easier for us to raise money haha.

As much as I want Skullgirls to be there, I don't want to donate to breast cancer research. I feel that gets enough attention as it is.

two big streamers were doing donation drives yesterday. we actually took a $600 lead for a brief moment before ssbm dumped a ton of cash all at the same time (they like to do this for some reason)

Trihex just started streaming again.  I've got a feeling that another massive donation will be dropping in tonight.  I like Tri, but I'm crossing my fingers for more fanatiq VA whorin'.

He did set the Yoshi's Island WR last night, so I have a feeling he'll raise a little less than before.  Can't say for sure tho.

fine, i'll bite then. it's funny because it's absurd. breast cancer research funding too mainstream for you? the fuck? the only reason it gets so much attention is because of the Susan G Komen foundation, a phony charity that spends most of their time suing real charities for using the phrase "race for the cure", selling useless pink ribbons and making a profit off of a disease.

besides prostate cancer breast cancer is the most common and one of the most deadly, regardless of the numbers it's just as valid as a cause as any other cancer. but hey, people with breast cancer get enough attention as it is, they don't need our charity - i'm sure the stickers of ribbons and bracelets are sending healing vibes to them, amirite?

Oh jeez. Touchy subject. Helping a good cause is helping a good cause, but if someone said they'd rather help other causes I can't really fault them. So while  Zenny's words sound callous I'm not going to assume he's just trying to be edgy.

There's this this (http://"http://www.cracked.com/article_19899_5-popular-forms-charity-that-arent-helping.html") article, which, while being on cracked, has some interesting perspectives and cites articles on other websites like Forbes. I disagree with some points it makes but I can see where its coming from.

yeah, awareness is a joke, but BCRF isn't an awareness campaign, it's purely for clinical and research funding. as stated on their site (http://www.bcrfcure.org/), 91 cents of every dollar goes towards research & awareness programs - and not the "wear a pink ____" awareness, the kind of awareness that helps people prevent & minimalize the damage that cancer causes before it's too late.

I've never insinuated that donating to this cause is too 'mainstream', just it's been done a whole lot of times that there are other causes that don't get enough attention. Donating money to organizations that will actually get food in the hands of starving people HERE in the USA; getting housing for veterans, finding jobs for vets, getting contraceptives to teens to prevents unwanted pregnancies, donating to small companies and organizations that help encourage green energy usage/green technology, donation to the research of cystic fibrosis  Really I could go on, but the point I'm making here is that there a multitude of things money could be sent towards but breast cancer research/awareness has the most attention of the public when it comes to mass donations.

Ironically the game fits the cause since it's an all-female cast of fighters.

Post by: rtil on January 30, 2013 07:32 AM
well with that logic you either donate to everything or donate to nothing - there are so many good causes out there, but one person can only donate so much of their time and money to so many things. just cuz i'm donating to breast cancer research at this point and time doesn't mean i don't care about those other things or never donated to anything else. but regardless of how much attention you believe breast cancer deserves, people are diagnosed with it, deal with the living hell that is cancer, and die from it every day. and until that stops, there's no reason why it isn't just as worthy as any other cause.
Title: Re: Skullgirls EVO Last Drive Jan 31st
Post by: ZennyPLUS on January 30, 2013 07:42 AM
And I'm not stating that it isn't as worthy of a donation, just that it has the attention many others don't. Simply put, just put your money where you think it should go.
Title: Re: Skullgirls EVO Last Drive Jan 31st
Post by: rtil on January 30, 2013 07:48 AM
just because it gets a lot of attention doesn't mean that anything's actually getting done. most of it is a racket.
Title: Re: Skullgirls EVO Last Drive Jan 31st
Post by: ZennyPLUS on January 30, 2013 07:52 AM
I don't quite follow. You just told me that 91% of each dollar is spent on research. That's what I seeing by looking at the site that you linked. Explain racket.
Title: Re: Skullgirls EVO Last Drive Jan 31st
Post by: ZennyPLUS on January 30, 2013 07:53 AM
Or are you speaking about the breast cancer donation/charity in general?
Title: Re: Skullgirls EVO Last Drive Jan 31st
Post by: rtil on January 30, 2013 08:03 AM
read my first reply - i said the reason why breast cancer awareness culture is so prevalent is because of the Susan G Komen "For The Cure" Foundation, a "charity" that spends most of its time making a profit on selling breast cancer "awareness" merchandise like pink ribbons, corporate sponsors for marathons and bullying other real charities. they raise more money for breast cancer than anyone else but their overhead is insane. so it's because of the Susan G Komen foundation that you believe breast cancer gets more attention than it deserves, and since you won't donate money to a deserving charity like the BCRF, you're only hurting the real cause because of the side effect that is the Susan G Komen Foundation.

nah not really. trihex has been streaming the last 3 days.

what i'm more concerned about now is that super street fighter 2 turbo has gone up from ~$1k to $28k in the last few hours

well, skullgirls lost, but it was still an amazing day. at the beginning of the day, the tallies were $30K for SG and $38K for SSBM. at midnight, they standed at $78K and $92K respectively. the SG stream also topped out at around 2.4K viewers. at the end of the night, MikeZ made a great speech thanking the community and revealed the beginning work of Squigly for DLC. we also got the word last week that PC port is in the works. even though SG won't be on the main EVO stage, we proved that our community is strong and dedicated, and i think it is the sign of good things to come in 2013 for the game. :)

oh wait there it goes
QuoteThough they didn't win, we were truly impressed by Skullgirls' showing in our recent donation drive.  The Skullgirls scene organized two of their own fundraisers and raised over $78,000.  So as a big "thanks!" Evo will support the Skullgirls side tournament at Evo in the following ways.
Evo will provide dedicated setups to the Skullgirls crew to run their side tournament in the BYOC
We'll also showcase the Skullgirls top 8 as an on-stream exhibition
To make things more interesting, we'll throw $1000 into the pot.
Congratulations to all the Skullgirls fans who contributed to the drive, and see you at Evo 2013!
