What would be on your personal bucket list? If you don't know exactly what that is, it's basically a list of things you'd love to do before you die.
Small or big things are both fine; do you want to swim with dolphins or maybe travel the world?
For me, basically seeing America is something I've always wanted to do. Other than that, skydiving would be rad.
I would like to travel across the globe continuously, keeping a journal of all the people I meet and the events that take place. Not for leisure, but for learning. Essentially in the manner of "La otra campaña". Of course give or take there are places that I simply can not go for the simple fact of being persecuted on the spot for particular reasons: Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Israel.
I would probably prefer go eastward, stopping by Cuba and then some other nations in the Caribbean first. South Africa and the Balkans are some other places I'd like to stop on the journey, and if I can make around somehow, Southeast Asia, Tibet, and Ryukyu Islands. Dunno how I would be able to do this without very much money however.
Do more useful things.
Improve skills/learn how to do more new things.
Have more of a taste instead of just not trying anything.
Actually cook food.
Explore the areas around me, maybe things don't make a real apparent change but I feel that maybe today could be different. (more observant around surroundings maybe places are becoming more natural or watch how people have changed it).
Traveling to new places is something I want to do more of.

Gonna Interject here.
I would totally take a trip to Japan if I had the extra cash.
Mostly because of the doujinshi convention called "Comic Market (http://www.comiket.co.jp/)", But I would love to see both Tokyo, and Kyoto just for fun <3
Always had a soft spot for manga and history hehehe

I completely get it. I would love to travel to Japan as well, actually I'm currently trying to get a special duty assignment in Japan for at least 3 years and just get a feel for how it is over there, who knows I may want to just live there after my enlistment is up if I decide to just stay in for one term.

the only issue i can see is the language barrier. while japanese people do learn english in school, they usually don't have anyone to practice it with so it becomes poor quickly. and it's supposedly pretty difficult to learn. i have some friends who lived there for a while studying the language and they are at the literacy level of about a middle schooler.
japan has a pretty fucked up society anyway have fun living next to an unstable nuclear reactor
let's face it you're only going for the ANIME, that would be like zekey moving to chernobyl because that's where the stalker games were set which would be utterly fucking retarded (though admittedly far more hardcore)
To make an 80ft painting and hang it on the side of a skyscraper, to win an Eisner award, to publish at least 5 major graphic novels in my lifetime, to produce/direct an animated film staring my characters, to visit those hot springs in the himalayas and soak with some snow monkeys, to eat a steak of lion meat, to see one of my creations become a plush toy, to travel around the world and see as many countries as possible...
the order is a little scrambled but those are a little bit more legit than "going to japan for epic animes" or some other bullshit

That's not true for lion meat...its really a dish that is highly listed on the exotic animal list that only a few people ever get to eat, given the nature of them being endangered and are illegally poached so the price of the meat is high on the black market. but I heard of a small organization in Africa who bought some land and legally raise/breed a few lions a year JUST to make them into steak dinners for the people who want to eat the lions meat...its mostly for various tribal shaman who do it for cultural/ritual purposes but yes its available at a price for the outsider who can afford it. And this is a nice alternative because then there are less lions dying from black market demands and it keeps the wild populations safe too. The other option is to buy lion meat from various zoos or circus that sell it when the lion is too old and dies naturally but I tend to think an old lion will taste old and that a young hand-raised lion thats meant for steak is probably fresher and softer meat. The taste is described as similar to pork but richer and requires a slow cooking process to be tender and yummy.
And uh seeing as I have probably WAY too much info on this subject, you can probably tell that wasn't just a "I'm so random funny" desire on my bucket list heh....I really do plan to eat some lion in my lifetime if I ever get the chance lmao

small minded people feel threatened by things they don't understand. japan is a country with a rich history, beautiful landscapes, inspiring architecture and a fascinating culture. there's nothing wrong with wanting to visit there.
There's also a heck of a lot of technological progression over there. Some fun stuff.

japan does have a fascinating array of sites and points of interest with historic relevance, but face it, just about everyone online who says they want to go to japan 'for the culture' are going for the otaku-subculture which the average japanese citizen fucking despises and wishes was just a bad dream

personally i'd just want to visit japan because it's responsible for a lot of what made up my childhood and some of the things i'm passionate about today. as much as i like to play the anime man though, i actually don't like modern anime as much as i let on and haven't seen an anime i've liked in quite a while.

oh yes, there are PLENTY of people here in the states that are like that.. one of my friends that did end up living in japan first started studying the language here in the states. he wanted to be a translator. most of the people in the class were just there because they were anime fans. pretty much all of them dropped out or failed. they werent' in it for the right reasons. and a lot of them probably have the wrong impression of what japanese people or japan is actually like. but i don't think anyone here is like that.
when i originally took classes i had pretty much the exact same experience as your friend. but in the end i stopped going too actually, 'cause i thought studying on my own was a lot faster and just saved a lot of effort in general.
also i'm aware of the stigma attached to wanting to go to japan, because sinitron's definitely not the first to immediately say "going for anime" or something to that effect. which i actually agree is a ridiculous reason to want to go to a country and learn the language for. there are people who hate anime and love japan though, just so you know. my ex hated anything to do with anime but liked the culture a lot. it's very apparent that i'm fond of anime, although i'd still like to defend that i'd want to go to the country regardless of whether i had that interest or not. a lot of the fanbase behind anime have pretty much made it so if you're interested in going to japan at all, it's probably something you shouldn't openly admit because people will patronize you for it.

most places in the world have an interesting culture that you could spend a lifetime getting into. is it really so odd to you that we have to choose what places to visit based on our personal experiences and interests? you need to have a "connection" of sorts with wherever it is you wanna go before you just go there, specially since doing so is expensive and you can't afford to go to a place you have no repertoire to properly enjoy.
you're also forgetting that you don't just "go somewhere" unless you're an idiot (which applies to many tourists in japan like you mentioned), you make
plans. i'd rather visit the chinese temples than the pyramids, and this isn't bigoted bullshit, it's personal interest and it's as valid as wanting to learn a specific language or playing a specific kind of music.
Quotehell the pyramids of egypt or great wall of china are generally far more impressive than anything else and worth visiting over some place where they eat raw fish

i can see where you're going with this , but it starts out with a logical informal fallacy - that by saying one wants to visit a country for its culture, one is implying that other countries do not share an equally fascinating culture, and therefore they are bigots for saying something that is not bigoted to begin with. you inserted the bigotry by adding an extra false and loaded statement. that makes no sense. "you are a bigot for visiting japan because you could have visited egypt instead". it sounds even dumber when you say it out loud.
sure i'd like to see the pyramids and other ancient ruins all over the world, but there are other factors that play in to it. like would you really feel safe finding yourself in modern egypt and actually enjoy your time there? i don't think i would.
just beacuse i want to visit japan doesn't mean i don't respect or admire other places in the world. there are too many places i want to see and visit in my lifetime. why do i want to visit japan first? japanese culture is a part of my life. there is a large japanese population where i live, i have japanese friends, friends who have lived in japan, friends i can visit in japan, they can tell me where to visit (and where not to visit), it's a place that's inspired and shaped part of my life, and i'm not ashamed of that. it doesn't make me a bigot in any way. you can't automatically assume one does not respect other cultures simply because they respect another. nobody thinks japan is a perfect paradise. their society has its flaws just like any other.
and thinking all big cities are "the exact same pile of concrete garbage" is just a misled opinion. clearly you haven't been to many big cities, at least i would not imagine so as large cities in europe are not the kind you'd find in japan or the states, but having visited many metropolis type cities in my life i can tell you that each one is distinctive and unique from the other in many ways. there are cities i love and cities i hate, and they are
not all the same. they might look the same to you (i don't know how), but when you're thousands of miles away from them it's easy to judge without actually knowing anything or having experienced them firsthand.

Quote

yes, that's what i was saying as well. people go to visit a country for certain reasons get crushed when they realise it's not what it was made out to be. a lot of japanese people get the same exact thing when they go to france, and actually have a mental break down because of how paris was idealized in their media, on top of many other things.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_syndrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_syndrome)
sometimes countries are made out to be something different then what the person has learned from media or other things, and japan is a really good example of that. but that doesn't make what you're saying any more valid. no one is arguing that it is a good idea to go to japan just because you enjoy their animation, but some people, especially for japan, go as far as that.

it's incredible how you can call something/one bigoted when your sentence alone is extremely bigoted. you're so convinced that someone cannot have a legitimate interest in that specific country that you would go as far to say literally no one should value that country over the ones you believe to be very rich in culture. i am not denying the fact that they are, as i even clarified that i would like to travel the world and am very interested in experiencing many different cultures, despite how foreign they seem to me, but japan has always stuck out as being the most interesting one to me.
hell, i've even come to a middle eastern country for a year just because i thought it would be an interesting experience. i got a lot of "why would you want to do that?" or "isn't that place dangerous?" comments, but why would i give up an opportunity to live in an incredibly foreign country for a year? i'd love to see more places because of all the different things you can learn from other cultures, but i wouldn't rate any of them any higher than the others. just because i have a preference with wanting to go to one one day, does that make me bigoted, biased, and stupid?
how about all of those people that want to visit rome? venice? or even vacation in hawaii?
your argument is about acknowledging other countries, but you refuse to accept the fact that someone may want to go to one country over others, just because they find that specific one interesting. your argument in itself is not only contradictory, but also biased and bigoted. i find it very hard to believe that you are ignorant enough to not notice it, but maybe you are just stubborn enough to not acknowledge your biases.

specifically singling out japan just makes you look like a colossal faggot, like singling out thailand because you've got a fucking ladyboy fetish or some shit
wouldn't that singling out thailand the one to make you look like a faggot, then? or are people just faggots for any reason now?
people want to go to specific countries because they find that specific country interesting for whatever reason they choose. how is it your place to tell people what is and is not acceptable for them to be interested in? i understand that sometimes people decide they want to visit a country for
the wrong reasons, even if it is very frequent for one country, such as japan. but does that mean you should automatically throw everyone who wants to go to the country in general into the same group? do you really think that's fair?
really?

i can't tell if you're trolling but if you're serious, saying "visiting a country for its culture is bigoted" is an argument that can pretty much never stand on its own. the only other reason i can think of that would make you say something like that is that you actually hate japanese culture so much that you literally see it as inferior to the countries you listed as examples and totally ignored the fact that peoples preferences in the sorts of countries they'd want to spend thousands of dollars taking a trip to is totally subjective and vastly different per person.

i can see where you're going with this , but it starts out with a logical informal fallacy - that by saying one wants to visit a country for its culture, one is implying that other countries do not share an equally fascinating culture, and therefore they are bigots for saying something that is not bigoted to begin with. you inserted the bigotry by adding an extra false and loaded statement. that makes no sense. "you are a bigot for visiting japan because you could have visited egypt instead". it sounds even dumber when you say it out loud.
no, it's a matter of "what do you want to do before you die"
specifically singling out japan as the only country you feel you MUST see and it would be a DISASTER if you didn't see it before keeling over is gayass fanboyism

i wouldn't feel safe anywhere but my own bed, but if you insist on bringing security into the issue, china has a pretty hardcore police force, and japan has a fucking trashed nuclear reactor and last i heard they were still unable to shut the fucking thing off - how would that make you feel any safer than the risk of having your head lopped off by wasim's fucking cousins??

just beacuse i want to visit japan doesn't mean i don't respect or admire other places in the world. there are too many places i want to see and visit in my lifetime. why do i want to visit japan first? japanese culture is a part of my life. there is a large japanese population where i live, i have japanese friends, friends who have lived in japan, friends i can visit in japan, they can tell me where to visit (and where not to visit), it's a place that's inspired and shaped part of my life, and i'm not ashamed of that. it doesn't make me a bigot in any way. you can't automatically assume one does not respect other cultures simply because they respect another. nobody thinks japan is a perfect paradise. their society has its flaws just like any other.

i would be sad if i never got to visit japan in my life yes but i never said that i NEED to go there or that it would be the end of my life if i couldn't. it's something i'd like to do before i die. it's not my life's achievement or the pinnacle of my existence. even if it was, what exactly would be wrong with wanting to live in japan as opposed to any other country? the same hurdles of adapating to a different culture would have to be made in nearly any other country, and the reasons for doing so would be somewhat similar.

egypt is on the brink of civil war and is a police state. japan has a safe zone around fukushima. i'd feel perfectly safe there if i wasn't near it, and i wouldn't be.
