Title: irc chat survey
Post by: rtil on August 10, 2012 10:01 AM
so this is for people who come to the chat. if you don't, you should. anyway, there is an mirc tutorial i wrote ages ago for how to use irc, and the problem is that mirc is nagware, it will keep asking you to buy it. so my question to those of you who use mibbit is , would you like me to write up a tutorial on how to install a freeware client and set up an irc client to connect to #thebackalleys irc channel? and i can add one for pidgin or other multi-messenger clients as well.

for those of you who don't know, our chat channel runs on irc, which is an old protocol for chat channels. irc clients are small, lightweight apps that can keep you connected to the channel all the time, like a messenger client but with more than one person. you can leave it on in your taskbar and idle when you're not talking, and bring it back up whenever you feel like chatting, or have it ping you if someone says your name, etc.

thanks! :wile:

Do you need to add a plugin to pidgin or trillian? I thought it was there to begin with like a standard protocol for those 2.

For Mozilla fans, I suggest Chatzilla. I quite liked it back when I liked integrated clients.
I bought mIRC though because...just because

I am ok with using mibbit, though an integrated, low resource program would be nice too.

I go back and forth between Mibbit and Hydra

I like having my browser tab tell me when someone says my name or if people say things so I don't have to keep clicking every few minutes to see if anyone did
Mibbit also lets me see when people are typing and when they're active/afk not to mention its youtube function
Uses quite a bit of memory though 'cause it's in a browser

Hydra I've finally set up to blink when people say things. Other n that, you could say my name a million times and I wouldn't know unless I check
Also sometimes the links won't open up when I click so it's like rgh.

I think it is for PC, I don't remember downloading anything for it.

on pidgin it's accounts > manage accounts > add and then in protocol just go to irc. i forget how to do it in trillian but i can find out if you need me to cuz i still have it.
