Title: important question (warning: not important)
Post by: sev on July 23, 2012 09:04 PM
(this question's mainly for people who work in/want to work in a creative field ie art animation music voice acting etc)

if you had to copy the skills of any artist/animator/voice actor/musician/etc that you admire in whatever field you want to work on, who would it be? the pro is that you get their level of technical skills and finesse, but the con is that your style is exactly like theirs and you cannot change it, and can only work in that style. (basically if you could instantly become a copycat of anyone, who would it be)

i couldnt answer this question because there's no real way for me to exactly copy another musician and be respected, by myself or anyone who knows of the person who i copied. i'd rather just acquire technical skill and finesse through my own means, and use those skills to create music in my own way. i couldnt imagine being limited by someone else's stylistic boundaries.

but i dont want to rain on your parade, so i guess the closest thing i can come to a real answer is: i'd copy the skills and style of a very skilled and varied studio musician who is proficient in most forms of popular music.

do i have to put a disclaimer on all of my dumb hypothetical questions from now on that say "if you don't want to answer this question then don't answer this question"?

if i could choose, i'd rather not do it for the reasons you and taylor said.
but i guess if i really had to choose, i'd go for someone who died at too young an age, or didn't leave all that much art to us for whatever reason. someone like jimi hendrix on music, jd salinger for writing, and maybe someone like mathieu kassovitz for filmmaking because every movie i've seen from him other than la haine was crap

i agree with taylor, i believe being an artist is an expression of self. its people channeling their thoughts and ideas into whatever medium suits them. so becoming a doppelganger of another artist wouldnt really make you artistic, because every kind of art stems from a personal place. and mimicry isnt art, its thievery

ok but what if once youve acquired an artist's skill/style you get transported to another dimension where said artist never existed, where even you forgot where you got it from?
