Title: A very CoolDr cool-ection

Didn't feel like finding my old one so here we go.

First.

my only feedback is the short time the background is visible it looks pretty awful and doesn't fit in the style of the character. if you can make it more graphic and cartoony that would be cool. right now it looks so flat and generic.

Good advice. Thanks. I have until Friday to complete this thing so once I've got it all sorted out, I'll see if I can change it before I submit it. I'll post a final version up here when I'm done

i think that some of his movements look a little stiff or unnatural, when he is walking, for example. im terrible with 3D animation and have no idea how to do it at all, so i can't really offer any advice there, but if you could make his limbs move about a little more "freely" i think it would improve it a lot.

however, i think so far it does look pretty cool! i like the design of the character.

Just realized that I made this one to replace my old art thread holy moley

So heres that senior project I worked on wish I couldve done so much more but I have an idea how to do more stuff mixing the two things together for the future.

well i think it's fine except that the sound quality on the infomercial one is just awful and if you're trying to showcase some lip sync work if you don't have anything better i might just leave it out because of how jarring it is

Ugh that sucks. That's really my only dialogue piece I've got. I might try and rerecord the lines then and resync it. It'll be a pain in the ass but I've taken this long to piece it together. Might as well put in the extra effort.

Insert more 3d work into it other than the first scene, we barely see the model and its animation.

I don't really have much more presentable 3D work at the moment. Figured it'd be a good way to engage the potential viewer by starting off with that though. The mass majority of my work is 2D. I'll be doing more 3D stuff soon.

Alright well long story short I got the sound to better quality. Is there anything else I'm missing? Do I need any sort of technical information on here for example or am I good 2 go?

I can say I thoroughly enjoyed watching that. I can't really help you with criticism though, as I'm someone of very limited artistic ability,

i like what you did on the left hand , which is painting with your eraser. you could have done it a lot more on this to give it more refinement and chisel out the details.
Title: Re: A very CoolDr cool-ection
Post by: CoolDrMoney on June 4, 2014 05:57 AM
It was intended as a sketch and it got a little messy around the hand so I erased some of the scribbling there. One of them happy mistakes. Maybe I'll set a grey background instead and sort of draw and erase like that instead cause it did come out kind of c00l.
Title: Re: A very CoolDr cool-ection
Post by: rtil on August 22, 2014 02:51 AM
some of the details are getting lost for me, like the hand reaching out. i think it's a combination of too many competing values , which makes the silhouette weak, and not enough foreshortening. the angle in particular makes this really challenging.
Title: Re: A very CoolDr cool-ection
Post by: CoolDrMoney on August 22, 2014 03:11 AM
Yea I redid the whole hand trying to brighten it up to make it contrast more.

What would you recommend?
Title: Re: A very CoolDr cool-ection
Post by: rtil on August 22, 2014 03:30 AM
well, if i was making a piece like this i think i'd simply avoid trying to have the hand inside of the silhouette. maybe change the angle a little bit to give that arm its own space, kind of like the other arm. if i really had to make it going straight at the camera like that, i'd try to use more dramatic perspective and thicker lines to make it really feel like that hand is reaching out towards you. that would also make it the focus of the composition
Title: Re: A very CoolDr cool-ection
Post by: rtil on August 28, 2014 05:04 AM
i think this is a better silhouette, however the pose of the hand is so extreme the fingers look kinda broken.
Title: Re: A very CoolDr cool-ection
Post by: rtil on August 29, 2014 05:54 AM
heh.. well, it helps to try it with your own hand to see if you can do it or if it hurts or feels unnatural. even though he only has 3 fingers. i think the main issue is that he's not bending his fingers at all, they're sticking out straight from the tip of the finger. what is it that he's doing with his hand? reaching out? it's hard for me to tell personally
Title: Re: A very CoolDr cool-ection
Post by: CoolDrMoney on August 29, 2014 06:06 AM
Yea hes reaching out but sort of really tensing the finger muscles so theyre rigid. I tried adding a slight bend to the last variation. It's still not reading right?

Lol looked at my hand finally and came up with this. This is the last one I spent too much time on this guy.I'm pretty sure I got it though if not then I'm just gonna use the best of the bunch.

So when I started this was just going to be a quick sight gag in my upcoming animation but as I developed it, I decided to make it a finished product. Here's the original:
And here's what I essentially want the finished to look like:
The only thing is I'm noticing the original looks much smoother and the second version looks kind of jagged. I tried first selecting by color range and then trying a gradient map and I got this with a little bit of tweeking. Is there maybe a better option to have the colors feather slightly at the edges so they arent so rough or is this sort of the best I can hope for?

Title: Re: A very CoolDr cool-ection
Post by: cipher on January 25, 2015 07:40 PM
I dig the new color palette, but I kind of see what you mean in regards to it being more jagged. I think it's just because the color transitions on the first one are a lot more subtle when compared to the colored version.

As for your actual questions, I guess you'll have to wait for someone who better knows what they are talking about

Making sort of an ol' timey style cartoon (black and white). Trying to stick to only 4 colors the whole thing but I dont know well see. Heres the first walk cycle. They bounce along to a tune thats going on in the background. What do you think~~
