did anyone else go to really strange schools when they were younger?
i had a history of going to some really weird schools and i was transferred around a lot.
the one i remember most was called Treetops International, and it's basically a k-12 hippie school in a forest in the middle of no where.
it sounds cool now but as a kid it was pretty terrifying. a lot of teachers got fired, one committed suicide, and the principal went crazy so thats why i got taken out. plus the education was horrible.
but they had a room full of jars of animal fetuses. there was a baby horse in a jar named clunky and a baby shark in a jar named stumpy.
we also had 'dangerous animal' drills where in case of bears or wolves we would stay locked in the classrooms for some short period of time.
haha sounds like a school my wife went to, they had to make their own school textbooks as they went along and everything was done by hand, lots of artsy fartsy stuff.. but nothing as crazy as you are saying. just the hippie-ish nature of it.
but as for me, not really, except from 7-12 grade i went to a "christian" school. we didnt' have to wear uniforms but there was a chapel service every thursday, and teachers prayed and stuff like that. had to take a few bible classes, too, and i'm pretty sure we weren't taught evolution but my teacher was so boring i have trouble recollecting. we had 7 classes a day, except on wednesday we had 1-3-5-7 with a 45 minute lunch, and on chapel day aka thursday we had 2-4-6 , inbetween 4 and 6 was chapel and an hour and a half lunch which was awesome, we'd always drive somewhere off campus to go eat and then you just had 1 class left until school was over.
it was probably the most fake christian school ever, there were only a handful of truly bible thumping goodie two-shoes there, most everyone else was part of the biggest clique there - spoiled rich kids whose parents could afford private education without any help , driving fancy cars and smelling like an abercrombie and fitch. im pretty sure they all fucked eachother at least once so it was like a big rich kid prep orgy of grossness. i was in a different group, the "kids whose parents thought private christian education would be good for them", befriended the smaller group of nerds. that part wasnt too bad :wile:
also being a small private school they didnt have many electives and their art program was a joke. i was the best artist of a school of about 300 kids, and i sucked - but i thought i was good because there was no one there to challenge me. then i went to art school and everything changed
oh god, i almost got into a rich private school when my mom came into a lot of money. i ended up going to a turkish charter school instead though.
dunno how she picked one from the other.
but writing your own textbook? not sure if that sounds like a brilliant technique or a horrible one.
The school i went to before high school was a public protestant(?) christian school. They went as close to trying to enforce religious teachings as fact as much as they could without being a private religious school but they did teach science quite well (out of requirement rather than enthusiasm.)
Uniform dress code and haircuts were strict and any anti religious debate/non christian stuff was punished (one kid got tarot cards cause he saw them on tv was just pretending to be a mystic in some made up game and had them confiscated, binned and was nearly expelled.)
The first head teacher was a sexist, pompous and impatient asshole and having to take part in a maypole display as part of a send of day for him when he left was gay as hell. The second head teacher during my time there after that was quite a nice fellow and but he didnt last long, i think he left the year after i left having changed very little.
Bullying against people who openly weren't christian there wasn't encouraged, but it wasn't stopped either and every time someone stood up for themselves against it they were convieniently nearly always at fault. So yeah as a whole going to the non religious focused high school afterwards was a great change (especially the more relaxed uniform policy!)
i went to a lot of schools and all of them were pretty weird in their own way.
i went to one that was behind a homeless shelter when i was in grade 6 and met some really messed up kids. the guy i hung out with the most claimed to be emo (didn't even know what that was until i met him) and only had one other close friend who was a girl who later on freaked out at me claiming i was taking her friend away from her blah blah blah they were friends since they were kids. she definitely had a crush on him or something. there was also a girl who was a year younger than me who would frequently come on to me which i felt really uncomfortable about. probably because i was in grade 6. i don't ever remember doing any work at that school, nor do i remember any teacher trying to make me do work. it was kind of a mess, but only the students were the really weird ones in this situation.
another elementary school i went to had some horrible teachers. i had one who would legitimately make fun of me in front of my class. i would lose my pencil pretty frequently so she thought it would be funny to duct-tape one to my desk on a string. she also flipped my desk one time and told me to clean it up, and i actually forget why. one time my mom came to my class to give me something and she would be like, "oh~~ stuart your girlfriends here!" so yeah, she was a total bitch.
the school i'm going to right now is what would probably be considered the weirdest. i go to an all guys catholic high school and we wear uniforms. almost everyone i know has very high grades, so i look pretty bad in comparison. i guess most of what was weird about the schools i went to was really just the environment, nothing really as weird as animal safety drills.

i never got the separating genders thing, but it makes sense because it's a catholic school
i've been sick of the separate genders thing for awhile but hey i'm almost done so whatever
My school hasnt done anything worthwhile mentioning.

the turkish school i had to go to was full of idiots and teachers who make fun of you. There was this really fat guy named Dr. Donovan, but got mad if you called him anything other than Dr. D, would eat half a stick of butter for lunch because it "boosted his immune system", claimed he wrote a book which me and a few friends later looked up and it turns out he didn't even write it and has no degree of any kind. he would openly call girls whores, and once when I came into class he said something like "youre getting far too skinny like a stripper. eat something or ill send you to the nurse". I wasn't alarmingly skinny, i just wasn't obese, which i guess he considered normal. he ended up getting fired for telling kinds how to smoke marijuana and where to get it and spending his hours teaching making kids make powerpoints titled "flowers & fun", or something about food.
and thats one teacher of the many i knew who were fired in my years at that school.

I wouldn't say my experiences in school were weird, but my own behavior was terrible. In elementary school I was constantly bullied, so it often left me in a bit an anger/depressed state and I had few friends. I did get into fights, but being boys meant nobody told the teachers, so I often got away with it. Like that one time I flipped open a locker door on some kid that bullied me for while and impact sent in on his fat butt. I used to steal from my teachers, especially when they took things away from my (few) friends, like our gameboys or trading cards. I have to say I was bundle of problems as a youngster, but I hid it damn well.
There was a teacher who did get in trouble once though, for getting a little too "friendly" with one of her students.
as you might be able to imagine, the most fucked up shit that has happened to me academically has happened in texas
however, i actually didn't have too much weird stuff go on. the only thing i can think of off the top of my head actually happened to a kid in my 3rd grade class
there was this one kid named cody who disrupted class a lot for whatever reason, and the teacher really didn't like him. i was a pretty nice kid, and when you're in 3rd grade, all you have to do to make friends is be nice, so i was friends with pretty much everyone, including cody. at one point, cody did something that really set her off, and she pinpointed him in the middle of class and said "does anybody even like you? raise your hand if cody is your friend"
i raised my hand, probably both because he really was my friend, but also because i felt like i had to stand up for him. but i was the only one who did, and her response was "yeah but you're friends with everyone"
that's pretty shitty i think
nothing unusual about my academic history whatsoever, explaining why i am the most sane person in here
Wow... I actually feel pretty normal after reading all of these little anecdotes...
I neither had bad teachers, nor did I go to weird schools. If I had to think about troublemakers throughout my school career, it would probably be myself but I never did anything too bad... I once provoked a kid when I had a loose tooth to the point that he punched me in the face and actually smashed the damn tooth out. That was in grade school and I actually got along pretty well with that guy afterwards.
In middle school, there was a point when one of my teachers sent me to the school psychologist for some reason that I don't actually remember anymore... I think it was because I kept arguing with my teachers and was making quite an aggressive impression on her with my general attitude although I never got into fights or anything. However, I stopped visiting the psychologist after the first time because I felt that it was unnecessary and preferred class over awkward talks with a middle aged lady about the way my face tends looks grim...
In high school I went to the school which was located in the deprived area number one around my hometown. It was like a huge multiculty fest but everyone was really nice and polite and the teachers were great too... Never got into any kind of trouble and I also didn't hear of others having any problems there. No idea why the reputation of that school was so bad back then...

Is dat solid snake in your avatar.
I have internet street smarts and nothing else.
aside from a third of it burning to the ground due to some idiot fucking around in the science labs, there wasn't really anything unusual about my high school. there was however this weird thing called 'solo' which was this almost orwellian room made up of cubicles where bad kids would temporarily be sent to do their work (as opposed to a classroom). each student was sanctioned off from each other, and they couldn't even look out of a window or anything like that, just the walls of their cubicles.
it was like the step between detention and getting expelled. i only went in once cuz in one of the years, students rotated on receptionist duty and i went in to pick some detention slips up (aside from getting in a few scraps i was mostly a good kid). even though i only saw it once i remember it being fucking awful - plain white walls, no music or talking, and a teacher slowly pacing about the room. there was just something sinister about it. my high school closed down earlier this year though so it no longer exists
my school experience is, in a way, a mix of a lot of bad stuff of what some of you have mentioned (especially relating to rtil and lenko)
when i was very young I went to a private catholic school where they teached sciene in a lot of depth and were always 100% for evolution, which was nice, but they were very wishy washy about what parts of the bible are true and which ones we can dismiss. I was very resentful when i was a kid because some of my teachers were full of shit and would harass kids/not let them play on a certain area for arbitrary reasons/cut off our fuckin lunchtime completely (really?). Also back then i used to be VERY religious. nut nutty religious but i still tried to adhere to my interpretation of things, and i was so dissapointed by the way adults acted in my school because they would encourage kids to steal stuff (in an ocassion, i lost an uniform shirt and the teacher just told me to head over there and take one from this other kids bag, so you see what im talking about?)... There was a lot of control over the students and collecting shit that looked anything like anime was strictly prohibited. i went trough a pokemon phase a yu gi oh phase and i always had to hide that stuff/lost some of it because it was confiscated.
I also drew a LOT of terrible comics which i believe i still have. some of them pissed off my teachers because they were basically troll comics i would pass around the class and they were about life in that school. I will NEVER forger when my teacher found out about it. he opened up my locker, brought the ones he could find there to the class and literally spent 2 hours destroying them in front of the entire class. he tried to get me expelled but he didnt succeed. my mom was really angry at me and told me to stop drawing. so i didnt draw for a while because my mom, my teacher and the principal tried to convince me that it was a waste of time and a shame to make fun of adults
my best friend claudio wasnt so lucky... he got the boot for doing similar comics/shit and he was so fucking depressed about getting kicked out that his mental state caused his body to develop diabetic problems.
I really hated the school and felt very enxious and depressed and i hated the cynicism and the lies and the feeling of intelectual issolation. whats funny is that even though i was raised in a hardcore (but not fundamentalist) christian family i think Nothing could transform me into an atheist faster than going to a catholic school. Ok that isnt entirely true i grew up still WANTING to believe but in my heart ive always resented and doubted religious institutions because i saw so much shit like that as a kid.
I think the beginning of the end for me was shortly after my dad died when i was 9 and the principal told me that this was gods will and basically told me that my dad died a horrible death because god wanted it to be this way. i told my other friends at school that i felt really bad and that i didnt agree with that at all, but they agreed with the principal. I felt those comments were sickening and for a while i didnt want to be friends with anyone at school....Especially because my dad was very religious and i think if he had heard a comment like that he would just end the conversation there. even as a kid it was really hard for me to hear those words because i saw religion trouh my dads eyes and i didnt want to believe that someone who believed the same as my family could say such... pitiful things.
after that i left catholic school and went to a really small school (60-80 kids?). and thats when i decided to start drawing again. We had very excentric teachers and we were always very open about our opinion and shit and even though we made a lot of fun of the teachers they never took it personally. And all of the kids were fucking weirdos but I felt at home and i think i still prefer the company of weird people than what someone would define as "normal".
It was a nice hippie-ish philosophy school and i kinda liked it. it was WEIRD but very nice. I became happier and more open since then and i probably wouldnt even do art had i not studied there.

there were numerous punishments of this sort at the school that i went to in texas, though most of them took place at different schools.
there was a large gap between "detention" and "getting expelled". detention was considered pretty mild, and getting expelled was so extreme you'd have to do some really fucked up shit.
i got caught up in some really stupid shit twice at my school, which caused me to have to go through this "program" called "challenge". basically, you'd start out in this section with only cubicles, and they'd rain work down on you (most of which wasn't hard at all, this was mainly busy work because the kids who went here were usually pretty stupid, which made me feel bad). you weren't allowed to talk, or even leave the room to eat. they brought you lunch in a paper sack, and it was usually just a gross ass sandwich and some chips or something.
if you did well in that setting for like two weeks or so, you got transferred to an actual classroom. it was still strict, but it was way less so. you got to go to the small little cafeteria to eat, and you could actually talk during some settings. if you disrupted the class or something, though, you got sent back to the cubicle.
this program lasts around 3 months, and is pretty obnoxious. i went through it twice for basically making stupid decisions/trusting people who i shouldn't have.
the program sucks but i understand why they have it. my school was filled with bad kids, kids who didn't give a fuck about education in the slightest. they couldn't just expel everyone who got into a fight or brought alcohol to school, because that was a large percentage of the kids who went there, so they had to set up that program.
taylor i think a good ol NIGGER DEATHCAMP with gas chambers and shit would have been more effective at your school in the long term
maybe not good for you, though
when i was 14, i went to a really nice high school for a week. it was a public school, but it was a really highly-rated one that i happened to be zoned for. i made a handful of friends in only the first few days and was getting along pretty well, was a really nice experience. then i transferred to another one a week in after i moved. this school was out in the country, but going into it, i didn't think it'd be so bad. same high school experience, just a different place.
first thing i noticed when i went into the school was that the entire place smelled like the insides of the walls were stashed with the decaying corpses of the long-since-deceased elderly. second thing i noticed is that everyone looked extremely bizarre, all sporting weird 90's high tops and mullets. it was like i was in another world.

i also noticed that (not to be rude, but) everyone was really gross looking. like, not even the hairstyles, just everything. poor hygiene, physical condition, etc. i didn't judge them by that though. i judged them by the fact that there was not a single native person from the state that lived here that was not a huge douchebag. the people here (students and teachers alike) were massively socially retarded and impossible to get along with in ways i've never seen anywhere else, not even on the internet. it was a gigantic contrast from the previous school where everything was going smoothly. i went from being a normal kid to having no friends, and when i finally did make a few friends (6 months into my freshman year), they were not natives, but instead from northern states like me. like me, they were also sort of forced into the school because the town its in is sort of a bedroom town that doesn't cost a lot to live in, and their parents just kind of tossed them into the school without really looking into it. i had virtually nothing in common with those friends otherwise (aside from making music, which i've only ever really been tentatively and casually interested in my entire life because i like singing sometimes), but they were the only people that i could actually ever relate to, and i needed that. since then, they've moved back to their home states and pretty much never come back these days.
i've also spent a little bit of time doing some supplemental school work and testing at a florida school in which i was one of 3 white kids that had ever stepped foot in the facility in the last decade. surprisingly, i fit in better here than in the previous school i was just talking about. the kids were all pretty friendly and decent. i had nothing in common with any of the kids i met, but it was still better than the actual high school i went to.
I lived in low income neighborhoods, I had enough problems at home to deal with, school was just a distraction from the assholes who lived on the same street as me. :D
I went to an expensive school for spoiled assholes all through elementary and junior high, hated all of the people there
Then in highschool I went to a not so expensive school for lazy assholes, damn that school was useless,
Nothing too weird or memorable really
I went to a very small high school that was grades 7 through 12 and hoo boy did that suck. The school had a decent mix of kids, most of them were pretty rural though or super meathead athletic. Didn't have too many friends due to being an awkward twat and also cuz most of the kids in my class had known each other since elementary school. Also yeah my graduating class was 68 kids I think. Our rival high school a mile away graduated something like 1,200. I hear they're finally planning on integrating our district into the larger one and I'm like fuck it, go ahead.
