Post by: lenko on February 9, 2012 09:43 AM
i think this is thread 7, it'll mostly be sketches like last time but i'm gonna be working on some paintings soon

EDIT: i updated this first sketch page recently, so i'll put that here instead of the old one

more stuff, i messed up on a few of them (the girl holding the tommy gun is completely off, and i rushed the pangolin so the construction is fucked beyond repair) but practice is practice

i liked messing around with bolder lines for the skulls, might do more with that

he said he's open to trying new things - something that you're incapable of doing but criticize others of not doing. that's pretty funny.

lol, you're such a tool. fine, you want me to get technical while you play stupid? what i mean is that it's a narrow point of view to say "x style is better than y". you'll often hear some people say anime is better than "cartoon" style and vice versa, when the bottom line is that it's all subjective. there are amazing artists of all styles and practices - no one is copping out by drawing the way that they do. a face on a character doesn't have to be extremely detailed or a certain style or else it's "copping out" - simplicity in style is there for a reason. art is not intended to be realistic, it's intended to make comments on reality through visual interpretation. whether it's done with 5 strokes of the pen or 5 million it doesn't matter, each result can be equally beautiful. but i wouldn't expect someone like you to understand that because you can only feed off the opinions of others instead of come to your own.

but he wasn't, he said he draws what he feels is appropriate for the piece. if it's relatively simple, you keep everything like that- you wouldn't draw an incredibly detailed arm and then half-ass the rest of the body, would you? WOULD YOU, YOU BICEP FETISHIST

what! thats not true at all i think youre a good guy. just because i dont suck your dick like some of the people here doesnt mean i dislike/hate you. although i gotta admit i did get the feeling that you thought i hated your guts. i guess youre not used to people not sucking your d or something. sad!

no one can ever be on rtil's side just because he's rtil, i find. it's really dumb but sometimes i avoid arguing rtil's point even if i feel similarly about it just because i think that someone will just say i'm whiteknighting him as a cop-out.

anyway i think lenko does a great job of combining simplicity and complexity in his style and it's something i admire. his use of line for a lot of things is impressive and i really don't think the faces distract from it unless you're just being picky and have personal distaste against it. i don't understand why people are so offended by simplicity and it's a trait i think can really make something look great--despite how others may feel--and i value simplicity a lot myself.

look, i'm just saying that the people that tend to have a problem with me fall in either or both categories, so i'm just throwing them out there. then there's also the people who think it makes them look cool to disagree/argue with everything i say because i'm the admin, i mean am i pushing any buttons here? don't leave me out in the cold here , let's not pretend you don't have a problem with me and the likelihood that it has something to do with yourself.

on the point of leaving you out in the cold, ill explain where im at: im not jealous of you, i do have friends (i do!), and i have never disagreed with everything or anything you said because 'its cool'.
think about it, maybe *when* i argue with you its because i disagree with you on that particular thing, and not because i hate your guts/think its cool/wanna troll you. and sometimes i could be wrong! i may have misused the ad hominem argument above, but it did feel as if bp was saying that sinitron shouldnt say lenko was overusing anime faces ('copping out') because he himself draws everyone with big biceps or whatever. isnt that an ad hominem

again, i think youre a good guy and dont make this thing (whatever this is) personal, because it never was. i guess you should make a fourth category, rtil!

i think these are all pretty great. some things are off here and there anatomically as you've sorta said, but its nothing truly significant and these are just sketches. i think its really impressive how distict and dymanic your cartooning is. most of the time, no matter what you draw, i can almost instantly identify it as yours, which in my mind, is the mark of a well-developed style. the creatures and machines in particular are gorgeously detailed and interesting. i also like the varying poses and clothing of the characters youre showing here too. keep it up! i hope the silliness in this thread doesnt deter you from posting more

perspective is pretty simple stuff when you get the hang of it. idk just how much you dont know about it, but id reccomend lookin up some 2 point perspective tutorials or somethin on youtube.

2 Point Perspective Drawing-Start Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpLJT_SHqpU#ws)
(like this except better)

its all very dull and technical mostly but if you dedicate a little bit of time to understanding it in a stripped down form (aka boxes on a blank plane) you can start to see how it applies in more complex works

How To Draw Two-Point Perspective, with Karl Gude (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=felys-u4nfk#)
kinda like this

i had to take a class earlier this year where it was all about making these fucking technical perfectly in perspective architectural drawings and dividing boxes into 64 perfectly equal parts and it was mundane and redundant, but i guess i walked away understanding the whole idea better. i dont know if i could muster up enough passion to attempt to do things like that without it being part of an assignment, but id certainly practice a bit i guess idk

@ zop: yeah i know the basics like two-point, but anything after that makes my head hurt (like, the really crazy shit where cities are seen from an angle at above) i guess the book jake posted will help though. my class was taught very rudimentary perspective at university and that was about it (unfortunately the course became more after effects based after a while and traditional drawing sort of took a backseat, no lifedrawing classes in the third year for example which was fucking stupid). i always wondered if there was a 'quicker' way to do it, but i guess it'll probably come more naturally after grinding away doing all the technical crap for a bit

@wasim: our album should be mastered by the end of march, so i'll probably put it on soundcloud or something

yeh once you do it for a bunch you sort of get a feel for it i guess without needing to constantly rely on rulers and shit

i couldn't even imagine drawing proper perspective with a tablet

drawing with a tablet in general feels really queer compared to pen and paper but with all the digital tools you could have at your disposal you sort of make up for it fairly effectively

i love the song, i can see what you mean about people not caring for the vocals, although personally i thought it complimented the instruments really well

thanks, and yeah although the core band is a pretty typical 4 piece (singer/rhythm guitar, lead guitar, drums, bass), we've got a few friends doing guest spots like that sax. the saxophonist was close to actually joining but then she got pregnant OOPS

I've always enjoyed your art, Lenko, especially your bad-ass creature designs. Keep it up.

Lenks hasn't had an internet connection for a couple of weeks now due to his crappy location in a village in the middle of nowhere. He also apologises and says that he will still release the video as an alternative one for free that you don't have to pay for cause he's halfway done (and still thought he had till the end of April to finish it).

hopefully, he's gonna be back in the next few days or something

fun fact: i spent $60 of skype credit talking to lenko a few times while he's been gone. i would call him and ask him when he's coming back, but i officially have no more money from this magical excursion
