Uncomfortable thread. I hope you actually build relationships in this game and not just rape helpless disabled women. There are waaay to many of those visual novel games (shows the lack of confidence men in Japan have).

I agree, it's bullshit but then again "cute" girls are the escence of every VN as far as I'm concerned and you could have a rough job trying to illustrate certain disabilities as cute or appropriate for a romantic relationship...
There used to be this goddamn picture somewhere around the web of some guy who was about to have sex with a woman whose limbs where all completely amputated but who still lioked quite sexy sespite that and the text below it said "why not?".
Now, if you would try to pull off the same thing with a different kind of disability, lets say a mental one such as down syndrome, it would probably seem a lot more sarcastic and weird, not only because of the way the girl would look but also because a mental disability always provides the danger of being considered a form of rape...
That's basically the first reason... the creators had to select certain types of disabilities that still leave room for a certain kind of attractivity or cuteness and, if possible, even provide a certain kind of fetish as long as it is not too awkward.

Additionally, disabilities of the kind that people are born with may be considered more appropriate for a setting as this one and I also don't consider a trauma or a burned face a disability but the difference is that the latter instances always contain a story and maybe a hidden past which makes them way more interesting for this concept than an inherent disease or disability.

Only if you want it.

But the burns and trauma aren't her disabilities she has some form of social anxiety, in the game she has a panic attack from people just talking to her in class.

i got lilly's story arc playing through it even though i wanted someone else's but i found out too late that i screwed up to make it possible. you really have very little control over what happens as there are only a handful of decisions you can make throughout the entire game that can completely change the direction of the story. it's also extremely heavy on text but i get that it's a visual novel first and a game last.

some of the art was really good, some of it not so much, you can tell that lots of different artists with varying styles worked on it. but for a bunch of ragtag artists, developers and writers to come together and make a game out of an idea from a sketch after 4 years it's pretty impressive work.

even though i wasn't going for lilly's story i did like it. the writing and character development is pretty good, they really make you feel bad for the girl and it's all emotional and shit. a lot of the times though i did not like the character you play as, his thoughts and decisions are ones he mostly makes on his own and ones that i rarely agree with.

i'd also like to go back to a certain save and try to get the story arc that i want but i feel like going through all the text again may be too much for my impatience to handle.

Post by: funzop on February 1, 2012 01:41 PM
i played it for about 10 minutes so i cant really have a valid opinion but from what i saw it is pretty well written and well put together! its not nearly as shitty and cringeworthy as most games like it and while it employs a lot of anime cliche writing which is kind of mindnumbing and silly, the concept is pretty original in terms of the idea of a "dating sim"
nevertheless it is still an interactive hentai novel

i thought it was really good, but
some of the choices kind of irked me. like choosing "go to town" or "call it a day" with hanako's story decided whether you were going to get the path for the good/neutral ending and bad ending respectively. i feel like the choices you make should reflect what happens better - in the bad ending, you're a lot pushier with hanako and literally force her to flip the fuck out on you by just prying and prying, and i feel like the choice you make that leads to that ending should be more indicative of someone who pushes. that way, you can actually feel the effects of the path you chose and it'd be your own fault for pushing hanako, not just a random character trait they threw in to suit the ending.
otherwise it was really good and kenji is hilarious

I've FINALLY finished all the arcs, which is great cause my god it makes me feel like shit doing arcs 3-4 for each character!

i would rank each arc
1. Lilly
2. Emi
3. Shizune
4. Rin
5. Hanako

It was a good play and considering what i thought i was going to getting myself into and what it turned out to be i'd say it was a pleasent suprise!
Title: Re: Katawa Shoujo
Post by: rtil on February 7, 2012 02:55 AM
i just finished all routes this evening as well. my favorite was lilly's by far.. rin and emi's were both good as well. shizune's was very different from the rest, and not in a bad way. it's difficult to compare them to the rest because of how everything played out,
but i did change my opinion of misha in a positive way and i felt more for her than i did for shizune, because even shizune realizes in her "bad ending" that she does toy with people and is kind of a mean spirited person, even though she doesnt always mean to be, and i think that it took hisao's influence to help misha out of her bad spot where she put on a mask of happiness every day.
and hanako, well, it was good but those kinds of characters tend to annoy me with their timidness, but i do like that she doesnt appreciate being treated like a child and isnt the stereotype weak girl that needs a boy to come and save her from herself.

Current runs are:
1. Partly through Emi, probably getting a happy end.
2. Died on the roof with Kenji.
3. Happy ending with Rin. (Cried twice, damn it.)
4. Starting Hanako, planning on a bad ending.

Goooood game, but long.

:') rin is easily my 2nd favorite, i loved her character and i thought her story was great. she is also the funniest character in the game, she has a great sense of humor. always so dry and sarcastic and it messes with hisao's head

i thought so too, but apparantly in the world of visual novels, KS is quite short. clannad is boasted to be worth about 700 hours of total gameplay.

Well, yes! Especially for Clannad that is...
I'm not sure about the 700 hours but at one point I read something about a 300 hour guide.
Can't really say that this whole VN thing is my kind of concept so far but maybe I just haven't gotten into it yet... I've only come to finish Emi's route so far and I cannot say that it has really touched me... I found it kinda boring and predictable and while I know that certain kinds of simple literature can move me to tears, this game hasn't make it yet.
However, I bawled like a baby back when I watched the Clannad anime and even though I am a big fan of it, I would probably not play the original game for the reasons stated above.
Title: Re: Katawa Shoujo
Post by: rtil on April 29, 2012 08:08 PM
well if you can get 300 hours of it guided i'm sure you can just as easily spend 700 hours playing it blind

some routes are not for everyone. and most people get emi on their first playthrough. my favorite was lilly's, rin's a close second, but i liked the others as well, and each one is quite different

also, here's another survey conducted on 4chan

only result i was quite surprised with was the majority of people liking misha's old haircut over her new one. i mean the drills are cool and all but they're a little silly. i love her shorter cut

also (misha spoilers ahead)
a misha route just doesn't make any sense.. unless the same thing was revealed in her route that was in shizunes. it couldnt end in romance
i am also surprised a lot of people cried at her route 'cause i didn't really get a lot of feels from it. she was pretty damn relatable though, but i felt like they just really didn't go into her past too much.

playing through it just really makes me want to see all the other routes.

a good way to get emi is to go back to the decision with the nurse and say that you will be serious about taking your medication. then you just ignore shizune and misha and you should get shoehorned into emi's path

you'd need to have some wide sleeves, but you could just bend your arms backwards so that your hands would be holding onto your shoulders/back of your neck

this may or may not cause prolonged back strain

i've seen this floating around for a while, and i decided i'd actually try it. i dont need to lose weight , and i go to the gym a few times a week, but i am not much of a runner and i'd like to be able to do this. started last night on week 2 because week 1 exercises are too easy. it was a good pace and i'm hoping i'll be able to keep momentum. then one day i can go fast like emi.

This is sort of what I usually do when I'm off school more or less. It (running) is also good to get back into if you haven't done it in a while, assuming you haven't gained a ton of weight.

Although even though just about every exercise guide thing tells you too, I rarely took days off and never really noticed anything. I'm not saying you shouldn't rest, but yeh.

I don't see anything wrong with getting inspired from videogames, tv shows or other media, regardless of the area you develop an interest in as long as you enjoy it and it has a positive impact on you, but this is not the firsttime that I hear about people staring to run because they have played Katawa Shoujo and I simply find the sheer amount of these masses ridiculous. I mean it's nice to discover something that you like but why would you need a fictional character to make the respective activity tempting enough for you to give it a try? Running really isn't something that I would consider special or  unusual. People do it casually, for instance, to catch their buses and it's part the warmup of nearly every kind of sport that I can think of.
Why didn't you do it earier? Why do you need a cartoon girl with big eyes who takes it up the ass to inspire you?  Why didn't Forest Gump do the same trick? (Why did I even slip into that route and ended up not enjoying it because the ending was  predictabel and it did did not give me any feels at all?)
I really don't consider it a bad thing, but even though it might be for the better, I find it quite shocking how much power certain kinds of media sometimes exercises over us.

because forrest gump is just as fictional as emi iberezaki? if you're talking about me, i'm not running because of katawa shoujo, like i said, i already go to the gym 2-3 times a week, but i'm not a very good runner and i think the program on the image will help me pace myself to be able to run 5k straight. i don't really care that emi is on it. but a lot of people did "do it for her", while knowing very well she is not real. what the fuck is wrong with that?
Title: Re: Katawa Shoujo
Post by: Kött on August 4, 2012 10:52 PM
Running 5k straight really aint that much of a hassle...
When I had an obese, untrained pal, whom I got to know online, staying over at my place, I actually cooked up some irl achievements (again, inspired by videogaming) that I wanted to accomplish with him throughout the week he visited and one of those goal was a 10k jogging session. He surely wasn't fast, but he did pull it through in one without walking or stopping.
I personally don't think that a mixture of walking and running will get you far. Just choose a certain distance, start at a slow speed and try to get faster. As soon as you try to walk, you're giving your body the wrong signals and you are entirely breaking your pace. That table was designed by an amateur and what actually disturbs me about it is the fact that people seem to accept its contents blindly as if the image of a fictional running icon was a guarantee for an effective and elaborate training programm.

your claim is somewhat contradictory, you claim to not resent those who have set goals for themselves out of appreciation for a specific character, yet continue to throttle the point of it. those who the game and chart have inspired, have found the drive to do something that they haven't been good with- this case being running. if they're doing it for the character, then it's obvious that they feel some emotional connection to them, which makes sense because everyone on some level sees fictional characters as real people.

that being said, it's not always the character that drives someone, but more an epiphany of self-worth and respect. people aren't just mindless drones, they know what they need to do and want to do, and they keep it in the back of their mind until they're motivated to do it... sometimes all they need is a little extra push

no, it's called pacing yourself and it's actually been working great for me. i've been able to stay on the treadmill longer and get more out of running. running straight non-stop until you're dead beat is a terrible way to train your body, just like with any other training regiment, it's better to do smaller amounts of an exercise for longer than to push yourself for a shorter amount of time. the couch to 5k program wasn't made by some katawa shoujo fan, it's a real program that you can find lots of places and has been around for a while. someone just took it and slapped a picture of emi on it.

i run at a 10 minute mile pace and i could probably do it for 5k straight if i really wanted to, but i'd rather work my way through this because i have no idea what i'm doing on my own and it's better if i have something to guide me. and like i said i skipped the first week because i knew it'd be too easy for me.

you don't have to put people down because they do things differently than you or assume that people do things blindly without understanding what they're getting in to. i'm not an idiot - i eat healthy, i'm in shape, i go to the gym regularly. but i don't have a personal trainer to tell me what to do and what not to do, so i obviously looked up this 5k program before doing it to see where it came from. one KS fan lost 40 pounds doing it. i don't need to lose weight but i just want to be a better runner. it's not going to hurt me to do this program.

Yes, because I have partly experienced this phenomenon myself, I cannot deny that it often causes people to change for the better and I can completely understand why the level of motivation would be higher when a certain activity is connected with something that you like. However, I still think that sports and fitness are such essential parts of life that I cannot comprehend the necessity of using this method on such a basic activity of running...  This simple 0 to 100 sensation that some people seem to experience who have never even considered running as a regular activity before... Some of those people are those who should be driven by the very fact that they are ashamed of their own body which still didn't move them to do something about it and then it's a simple videogame that does the trick? It is, of course, a very positive thing but it still seems ridiculous to me that a videogames succeeds in an area where several other means have failed.

I don't think that I have given you any reason to get insulting. I am simply convinced that anyone who can do a 100m dash would also be able to run 5km straight.
And concerning that particular program, I might be a little biased based on the fact that I usually try to push myself to the limit, regardless of what I do. I don't even know if that makes me sound arrogant or like a douche and I'm sorry if it does but it is simply my way of approaching challenges.
I think that a guy with your physical appearance could run a half marathon anytime and I don't really think that you are challenging yourself appropriately if you go by a plan like this. Have you ever experienced your limits? Have you ever been on the verge of total exhaustion and if so, was it such a bad feeling at the end of the day that you fear to experience it again? I am quite sure that everyone has experienced this at some point of his or her life, but was it really such a bad thing in retrospect? Speaking for myself, those moments have only made me stronger and I cherish the memories about them. Certainly, experiencing your limits is not the only way to improve your capabilities but it's a rather efficient one and it will help you to get to know yourself, so what exactly could you be afraid of?
Concerning the location, I have always felt a lack of motivation for running whenever I was on a treadmill... Having a nice route in the park or a rural area is just so much more rewarding than stepping on the same spot. I really can't comprehend why people go to the gym for that.
Title: Re: Katawa Shoujo
Post by: rtil on August 5, 2012 12:43 AM
pushing myself physically? no, i don't really care much for it. i push myself in things that i enjoy, like my art and animation. in all honesty i hate going to the gym. but i am in the interest of keeping myself in good shape, maybe even better shape. i dont' want to hurt myself or wake up the next morning with everything aching. i like to pace myself. no need to do anything crazy or train myself to run a marathon, cuz there's no way in hell i'm ever going to. it's a small, reasonable goal for myself that i can work towards and see if it works for me, and so far it has.

i keep myself motivated by bringing my phone with me and watching starcraft 2 casts while i'm running. there are also tv's down there. music and scenery is not really enough to keep me going. and the treadmill forces me to keep a steady pace.

I played Hanako first and then Rin. I liked Hanako a lot, but ended up feeling a bit disappointed with Rin.
Rin's story was a bit off, or maybe I just expected it to be more like Hanako's.

She was an April fools joke from the KS devs:
http://katawashoujo.blogspot.com/2011/04/announcement-future-plans.html (http://katawashoujo.blogspot.com/2011/04/announcement-future-plans.html)

But she, along with many other marginally mentioned characters has had an 'official' fan-made route for her which is really good. check it out if you have some time:

Like his namesake, Dust collects on decade old topics.

I really wanted to like Katawa Shoujo when I read it like a year and a half ago, but most of the endings left me kind of cold. There just wasn't enough meaningful character development for my taste. Most of the possible love interests ended up being exactly as they seemed from the get-go, right up until their respective endings, without ever really growing or acting in a surprising way (except Misha, who I did feel was well developed (pun intended I guess (sigh))). Like Rin for example, her central trait turned out to be her very resistance to change, which just made me feel empty (I have had friends/lovers like her and those people are genuine nightmares). It also bothered me that Hanako could never really transcend her hangups and no one ever called her beautiful or whatever.

So yeah, Katawa Shoujo depressed me, but not for the right reasons. I had more like emotional blue balls when I finished it than the emotional orgasm a lot of other people described.

If you want something in a somewhat similar vein, read Narcissu (I think bd624 recommended me this one originally). I've also heard Muv-Luv Alternative is really depressing but I still haven't made it through the first one. Key's games are depressing but only if you fall for their evil manipulative ways.

The most depressing VN I've actually finished in my opinion is still Saya no Uta, mostly because of the age I was when I read it and how hard it hit me. It's great if your a fuckin cynic with a heart as black as coal like me!

Saya no Uta OST 02 SABBATH (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmPtnelAvpU#ws)
^Probably my favorite track from any VN I've read^
(admittedly only a handful and mostly horror ones)
Edit: edited for literacy.
