Title: skyward sword
Post by: emanhattan on November 11, 2011 10:20 AM
i can safely say that during these past 10 days no 24 hours have passed without me thinking about this game

i can safely say the opposite

not even thinking of it right now thanks to the wonder of self-hypnosis

I originally wasn't planning on getting it, but over the past week I think its safe to say I've changed my mind. I really preferred the art style for twilight princess over this game, but I've heard enough good things to convince me to buy it.

However I won't be getting it for a while, going to wait for a game drought, since there's enough stuff to play right now

I'm with cipher, but I will get that game no matter what. I've got a plethora of games and the list is going on and on... I will say that it's a beautifully crafted game. A great way to see off the Wii. Good job, Nintendo.

Looks very amazing so far, much better than I thought from seeing someone else play. The music is great so far from what I've heard of it.
Kind of different that link dashes now instead of rolls and can run up walls a little bit. I would definitely buy it if I had a Wii.

i'm definitely anticipating this game too, though i've decided to spoil little to nothing of the game for myself so far

Cutest Zelda yet. The Bohemian look really fits her along with the watercolor design of the game.

game got like 10/10 on every site it seems. a lot of people are saying it's the best zelda game of all time, which is a pretty big thing to say. i've had this preordered for months but am doing the same thing as retrosmash and haven't looked up anything at all about it.

Isn't a controller packaged with the game? I know Nintendo had done that with Wii Play or something like that.
Title: Re: skyward sword
Post by: emanhattan on November 12, 2011 06:35 AM
im not sure if the remote comes with every single game (altough i think wiimotion is gonna be a requirement to play it..?) but goddamn its gonna be cool to swing around a fancy ass golden wiimote. i know i will enjoy it
Title: Re: skyward sword
Post by: cipher on November 12, 2011 08:53 AM
Yeah I've spoiled very little about it myself

On a side note, apparently the control scheme (with the wii motion plus) is amazing, and has some of the best most controls yet. And yeah I think there's a bundle that comes with a controller
Title: Re: skyward sword
Post by: naturally on November 12, 2011 06:20 PM
there is and you need a wii motion plus controller to play it

the bundle comes with some fancy zelda wii mote

I got one of the Wii motionplus dongles back a while ago. Those things are ugly, but they work!

maybe my little brother will get it for christmas and i can play it while i'm in PA
Title: Re: skyward sword
Post by: trent bortknob on November 18, 2011 08:36 PM
the thing is i didn't like playing twilight princess on the wii because the controls sucked. swinging the sword was a bitch and made it less fun

i preferred the gamecube version, and with the way nintendo is right now i know that there probably won't be an alternative version of the game so i don't know if i'll even want to play it at all.

i think it is very possible that the control scheme will fuck up the way i feel about this game. but those who have played it so far all seem to enjoy it except for this gamespot reviewer. and i agree with gamespot ratings most of the time... im gonna have to wait to find out and judge if the review is legit
Title: Re: skyward sword
Post by: cipher on November 18, 2011 09:23 PM
yeah honestly, every review I've seen so far, spare that one has been very positive.

Maybe the reviewer had an anti-zelda bias or something

and the end of the day though who really gives a shit about what reviewers say - if you're a fan of a franchise, you're probably gonna buy its sequels regardless of what some guy on the internet has to say about his personal experience with the game.
Title: Re: skyward sword
Post by: naturally on November 18, 2011 10:56 PM
i agree but i still find it interesting to see other people's opinion on a game i'm going to buy. if i asked someone 'hey is ----- a good game?' and they say it's terrible it won't effect my interest in it, but i'll ask anyway because i like to see why someone didn't like it, or rather why they did.

i don't like the idea of giving a game a score though, which is why i like yahtzee's stuff.

I will be picking it up as soon as it's out, can't wait

well i'm getting heart of the swarm even though i know the story will be just as bad or worse than wings of liberty, but i'll still cringe when i see reviewers praising it when it has blatant flaws and problems

rtil's right, i'll still buy it. And you made a good point with that other article, thanks man. I'm a reviewer and regular on Gamespot but this is news to me. Not surprising, as of late, GS has been giving out some lower scores compared to other major review sites.
Title: Re: skyward sword
Post by: naturally on November 20, 2011 09:15 PM
this game is amazing.

i'm only 5 hours in and maybe i'm just blowing smoke for now but i know for sure it's my favourite zelda game ever. everything about it feels great to me and sucks me in like no other zelda game was capable of doing. the story really feels like a story this time around. that may sound offensive to people who really enjoy zelda but i always felt the stories in all of them were generally uninteresting. they didn't really give me a lot of initiative to explore and find out what happens at the end. the motion controls are really cool, but sometimes i do find myself wishing i could just press a button instead of waving my arm around. i feel like this is the only game on the wii that really uses the whole 'motion' thing properly. actually i think it's the only game ever that does it properly.

i know i shouldn't really write about how awesome i think this game is until i finish it, but it is definitely worth the buy.

for those of us strapped for cash, I really try to choose games that only score above something for my hardearned money. I use it as a guideline. However if I hear and see enough good things about a game, I will grab it.

Most things by Suda 51 are exempt from this rule. I am a blind fanboy of his
Title: Re: skyward sword
Post by: emanhattan on November 21, 2011 01:42 AM
if a game doesnt score at least 8.5 it does kinda scare me away from buying it. but ive enjoyed a lot of games that score below 8.5 like voodoo vince, munchs oddysee and cell damage.

and yeah suda 51 is boss

reviewers are fags

go to metacritic, check reviews, compare to user feedback, look at all the negative user reviews and compare to more positive ones (do they bring up the same points?) then make a decision based on all these factors
Title: Re: skyward sword
Post by: trent bortknob on November 21, 2011 03:43 PM
yeah i don't really like reviewers in general, though they are useful if you view them in the correct light.

like using music reviews. a lot of music reviewers are snobby assholes (pitchfork media's whole fucking staff, the needledrop, etc)

but i've found that if you see a group that is usually labeled as similar to a group that you like, or you hear a group somewhere and like a song, or someone recommends a band to you, etc, it's not a bad idea to check out their albums and see what kind of reviews they all got.

with some groups (like joan of arc) not a lot of people review them and they usually get either very positive or very negative scores, so this process doesn't work well. but plenty of times when a band is recommended to me and i find a good album by them it helps me to get into them. almost all bands at some point go downhill and make a not-so-great album, and it sucks if that's the first one you listen to.

but with video games i just follow a franchise because i'm not much of a gamer. i pretty much mainly play zelda games but not very often at that.

i like link's awakening but it has its drawbacks

like you can't save the game unless you die.

everyone has to play a link to the past. amazing fucking game, same with the two n64 zelda games: ocarina of time and majora's mask.

nope

can you save the game in another way? i'd really love to know how. i was playing it for days and could not figure out how to save it, so i had to leave it on. i googled it and everyone said you had to die to save, except some people who said if you hit some button combination it would save, but it never worked for me.

you press A, B, start and select together

it ends the game but it was probably designed to discourage marathon play
