No more heroes 2

mario galaxy 2 has a bit stronger OST  than the original IMO and it can be catchy as fuc

the n64 zelda games have very memorable songs

Destroy all humans 2 (ok game, GREAT soundtrack)

but really, for me its a no brainer
Voodoo vince. HOLY SHIT.easily the best game soundtrack ever made. and the music fits the visuals of the game and storyline better than any other game i can think of
proof:

nice picks guys, though i still argue that the first galaxy has a stronger soundtrack. it was the complete encompassing nature of original creativity. it didn't rely on reference for the main level tracks. galaxy 2 was amazing, but it did have a sort of "remixed" vibe... i didn't feel that from the genuinely amazing tunes throughout galaxy 1.

oh, and voodoo vince is in my top 10, i agree eman.

Okay,

I hate picking favorites, but here's a few really good ones in my opinion:

Advent Rising
Okami
Halo games (I don't care what you people say)
Bioshock 2
Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles

I could go on and on, but, you know..

There's also a ton of game soundtracks that have a few amazing songs, while the rest is not nearly as noteworthy

klonoa!!! finally i see another of my top 10 ;)

good work on listening to a wonderful soundtrack, logen

in fact i was torn between klonoa 1 and mischief makers, but went with the latter for its surreal tones, and the appropriate mood for the strange, original gameplay, while klonoa was slightly more traditionally designed platforming.

like people have been saying, the legend of zelda for sure. i think majora's mask had the best soundtrack, mainly due to the song of healing.
final fantasy has a lot of good tracks
animal crossing has cool songs
i actually really like the music from mystical ninja: starring goemon

i don't know what else to put, i don't really play a lot of video games.

speaking of the LoZ games, i actually think that twilight princess or minish cap have the best soundtracks while majora has the most clever tracks.

minish being more brilliant based on the temples and environments and has that capcom charm, while TP has that grandiose orchestral quality. majora had incredibly clever mixes of OoT and brilliant temple midis, but they all sort of blended together in the end, and there were only 4 1/2 temples to really focus the score on... idk.

Title: Re: top 5 game soundtracks (not made by a commercial band!)
Post by: Pants, the terrible on September 24, 2011 02:05 AM
about hitman... the ambient submissive tracks are excellent, but they dont leave a final impact on the gameplay or the experience.

it has a similar feel to the timesplitters 2 music, but where the timesplitters 2 music was memorable and explosive, the hitman music was simply for ambience. the gameplay was what you were focused on, and it was great in the regards that you were not basing gameplay on rhythm, but on dynamic timing.

the timesplitters score was ambient, but it was heavily impactful on the actionpacked gun-happy FPS by keeping a solid 140-180bpm with flowing dynamics and string sections that dont feel forced, yet still keep you on your feet and in motion, and the music naturally falls into place.

hitman was just not a game where your meant to focus on the musical score and it succeeds in that regard.
Title: Re: top 5 game soundtracks (not made by a commercial band!)
Post by: BluPhoenix on September 24, 2011 02:13 AM
except in the fact the score is supposed to build tension and fit the necessary action and not just go full blast streamline like timesplitters

and neither are rhythm games so why try to sync the action with the music aside from showing it off to someone watching
Title: Re: top 5 game soundtracks (not made by a commercial band!)
Post by: Pants, the terrible on September 24, 2011 02:20 AM
its not about syncing up. its about expressing energy in the appropriate mediums. as i stated previously, hitman is a game that requires ambiance and gripping soundtracks to keep the player entranced and on their toes, and the score does what its meant to. its just not memorable. its not the main focus of energy. thats the gameplay and story's job.

in closing, would you feel as excited playing doom, timesplitters, or contra with the television on mute?
Title: Re: top 5 game soundtracks (not made by a commercial band!)
Post by: BluPhoenix on September 24, 2011 02:32 AM
there's a logical fallacy or 2 there because the focus of energy goes to the core gameplay in every game because it's what the player (and the developer) is focused on, and the ost is there to elicit emotion, and the central feel of play.

how can you say that hitman is a game about keeping a well-balanced soundtrack and keeping people on their toes then suddenly turn everything around like you're arguing with yourself

gameplay is the focus of energy. the audio should help build or maintain the initial feeling of that energy if its a game where the medium supports such energy.

for example, in most puzzle games you have more relaxing tracks until the game becomes intense, and you are in a "life or death" situation, the music reflects that, and instantly pushes you into a psychological state of panic. it usually stimulates more reflexive actions, and makes the final minutes of that specific puzzler more fun.

in hitman, its score is complete dark ambiance. its intense moments are almost always triggered by the player, never the music. the music is appropriate for it, as i said, but it doesn't keep anything energetic, which is also mildly appropriate given the stealthy subject matter.

"on your toes" wasn't a very good choice of words for hitman, i have to agree there ;). it is a very entrancing, pensive soundtrack though and isn't meant to be much more.

dont get me wrong, i love silent hill 1-4, but the in-game music was more just screams, static, some erratic smashing on pipes, and maybe a creepy vocal...

i mean, the credits themes are always good, and the menu themes are memorable, but there was no/not very much in-game music... and now that i think of it, the credits themes were all liscenced commercially O.O

silent hill does atmosphere better than any other game i know of and i think the soundtrack is a huge part of that, which is why it's on my list, not only because i really enjoy the theme and cutscene music as well.

edit: it even managed to make me feel safe at some points with stuff like this

dont get me wrong, i love silent hill 1-4, but the in-game music was more just screams, static, some erratic smashing on pipes, and maybe a creepy vocal...

i mean, the credits themes are always good, and the menu themes are memorable, but there was no/not very much in-game music... and now that i think of it, the credits themes were all liscenced commercially O.O

now that's where I don't agree with you. ingame it's not so apparent to many people, but it was indeed music that you've heard. some might say it was ambient music, but again, imho that's not the case. the score was as musical as it can get, it's just that it was heavily filtered / layered. just listen closely on a few youtube vids, and you'll notice what I mean.

Silent Hill OST - 10, 11, 12 - Claw Finger, Hear Nothing, Children Kill (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcmY-Xe2kNo#)
Silent Hill OST - 05, 06, 07 - Over, Devil's Lyric, Rising Sun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KICgZBBpyLQ#)

logen, thats exactly my gripe. its not heavily noticable during gameplay. when its filtered and layered so heavily, it acts as ambient sound effects to enhance the mood. the game relies more on silence, tension, and then loud, sharp noises. its not meant to be experienced as a series of memorable tracks in-game. thats why i don't consider them defined musical scores.

you know, memorability is something i take heavily into account when deciding my favorite OST's. :P

i remember silent hill (3 and 4 most prominently) as incredibly narrative experiences, with creepy visuals, a few scary pensive noises, and fun.

Wipeout XL Soundtrack 05 The Chemical Brothers Dust Up Beats (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L3iMH2jj6E#)

In response to Sinister's Wipeout 3 track, here's a track from 2097/XL, my favorite in the series.

Diablo I & II Soundtrack - Tristram Village (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2evIg-aYw8#)

This game has plenty of fantastic eerie, satanic ambience, but this track is the obvious standout.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq5t-QNy19s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq5t-QNy19s#ws)

Another ArmA tune. This game single-handedly made me like metal!

Information Society - Ozar Midrashim (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwMDNKVVZoM#ws)

This is in fact a commercial track, but it fits the game so perfectly I think it deserves a spot here.

i actually enjoyed the movie! it was sort of a existential, more woman oriented story, and harry is off talking to cops the whole time, but the rest of the characters are p. solid.

pyramid head was... to be honest a nice addition imo. they didn't use him as a sexual frustration metaphor this time, and just made him a bad ass who can skin people alive with his hands. fuck

oh, and the good world/bad world transition was just like the games. they did it perfectly.

Here's a surprisingly good shooter (campaign-wise at least) with cool music.

Medal of Honor 2010 Soundtrack - Taking The Field (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LadU-j3BDio#)

Medal of Honor 2010 Official Soundtrack - From Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTzup6IYWpc#ws)

Not everyone liked this, but I enjoyed the game and the tunes are pretty fantastic.

Insertion - Crysis 2 OST (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biLmkF_p8iw#ws)

05 Close Encounter Crysis II Soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_mZbBY6gIw#ws)

Say what you will about CoD, but its soundtracks are more often than not solid, exciting stuff.

Call of Duty 4 Soundtrack: Airlift - Start (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqKsz9kj_c4#)

Call of Duty 4 Soundtrack - Deadpool (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9frV8tKfNY#)

none of those games are particularly good in the soundtrack department. megaman only had 3 themes i remember very fondly, and they were not in the X series.

castlevania 4 was good though.

PS: street fighter? really sir? REALLY?

And that's why it's a personal choice. I fail to see how Zelda 2 doesn't have a good soundtrack, it was a pretty bold and fresh soundtrack at the time when it came and it's still a great listen for me. >> Castlevania: SOTN << DOESN"T have a good OST? Considering that it has remixed songs from Castlevania 4 (Super Castlevania) I wouldn't see why you wouldn't like it. Michiru Yamane (Castlevania), Koji Kondo (Mario, Zelda, Metroid) and Hideki Okugawa (SF, Rockman, Dead Rising, and so much more) are all talented people.

Street Fighter 3, I rest my case. If you don't like hip-hop, then you probably won't dig it's OST.

I rest thy case, sir pants.
Title: Re: top 5 game soundtracks (not made by a commercial band!)
Post by: Pants, the terrible on October 10, 2011 03:22 PM
they are opinions, buddy. i dont dig street fighter's tunes.

zelda II isn't much more than decent to me. the original palace theme was just over-phased... they didn't allow any sustain like the melee remix did, and there are much, much better chip-tune soundtracks. the majority just felt like re-hashed versions of the previous game, which didn't have the best soundtrack imo. (mischief makers as my prime example of the great chip tune OST of our generation.)

oh, and remix =/= better. if i'm going to listen to the sonic adventure 2 soundtrack, its not going to be in shitty generations with its "trance mix". there are many occasions when remixes make the original seem better, so don't let that affect your judgement of the previous paragraph.

sorry to DP the thread, but here's that shitty trance thing i was talking about:

Sonic Generations Music- City Escape 'Classic Remix' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyF_mi3ndI0#ws)

its missing that post-punk brilliance of the original track, and completely destroys it with the audio design of kanye west. how the fuck is this at all "classic"?

idk, i always felt more secluded and haunted in portal, simply because instead of an open world, you are inside a singular being that seemingly controls everything. its a scary concept, and the soundtrack built heavily on it. it definitely has to do the with glados transition from rational monotone comedian into a hellish, bitchy, demon.
