outgrew counter-strike before source was released
fuck i outgrew it before 1.5 was released actually
game for 13yo
I liked CS:S but then I realized that the most of the people who play it are little kids who like to use their mic.
It seems that CS:S as a whole has kind of died down in the pro-gaming scene (it of course used to be one of the most popular) but I wouldn't be surprised if this changes that a little.
i'll get it. kind of a fresh start and i don't think cs veterans will immediately jump on the bang wagon. the main reason i don't play cs anymore anyway was the amount of people who were just stupid good at it.
this is mostly for the console players, pc dudes won't give a crap about this, 1.6 is still alive and kicking, and people won't ever change to anything else, because of a number of reasons. valve already failed with condition zero and source, the same will happen with this too, there's probably gonna be a few new players for it, but that's about it

yeaaah, i know bp already gave sufficient input on this but;
I highly doubt that valve would make ANYTHING that would just get "a few new players". Those guys are the kings of FPS, if they make something people will buy it. People will play it. And most of all, they will enjoy it.

exhibit d. non steam gamers, which make up 80% of 1.6 now, dum dum dum
they did fail, didn't they intend source to take over 1.6? wait, people are still playing a 12 year old game? what
where are you getting your statistics
it's a valve game. it's on steam. you can't play multiplayer without it registered to your steam account or you'd get VAC banned.
some people like the source engine, some people like the good ol goldsrc engine
stay out of my exhibits you loon get your own

don't tell me you've never heard about a thing called pirating
just because it's a valve game, it doesn't make it impossible to pirate and play online. obviously, you can't play on steam servers with it, but most servers nowdays
are non steam, which can be played by both steam account holders and non steamers
the difference is that you either have a steamid with a number or just a line saying steam_id_lan
as for stats, just look at gametracker (http://www.gametracker.com) or something...

every version before 1.6 is free, and VAC sucks anyways, it's not preventing people from cheating

notice how the amount of players in no-steam servers stop on the first page
out of all 1000 or so pages the users playing stops at 200 or so and its the same thing with CSS, and the only reason there's so many servers is because they're outdated/haven't seen movement in years/no one is using them/no one wants them
pirating this game for being 12 years old would be retarded with no-steam servers because nobody's playing on them
so yes 75 non-steam servers count for 80% of the 25000 or so servers in total
and when i say no-steam, i dont mean not-vac-secured
this is a fantastic deviation from the thread and i am not seeing your point here
what exactly makes css a 'failure'?
the community taking preference in an old classic?
valve making money off the franchise?
its not about intentions, you cant control what the players will ultimately go with, valve will most likely make a lot more money when global offensive comes out, as it's also appealing to the console market, more people will probably buy it on consoles, because the people seeing the product on their tv for the first time that dont know what it is most likely dont have a good computer. what you're complaining about is like comparing starcraft to starcraft 2, plenty of people still play both games, plenty of people own both, and plenty of people prefer the old brood war better. does this make starcraft 2 a failure? HELL fucking no, blizzard's stacked, and the starcraft 2 community only gets bigger and bigger. counter-strike is no different.
notice how no one gives a fuck apart from you two geez
These sort of army shooting games come in 2 varieties:
a.) twitch-aim games with 1-bullet-deaths and grenade spam like 1.6 and CSs which arent fun to play
b.) regenerating health + a whole mag doesnt kill 1 player + retarded ballistics and 1-knife-kill deaths like Call of Duty/BC2/Homefront which arent fun to play
this game will be one of the two. probably a.
enjoy being sniped through walls in 2011.
i'm going to wait patiently for the new Tribes so it can break my heart like most modern sequels to good old shit.
pardon me im just trying to straighten some guy's shit out ok
i like how you think servers that have the words "non steam" in the name are the only non steam servers. have you actually looked at the pictures i've linked?
gametracker server count: 26306
steam server count: 580
your conclusion: 75 non steam servers?
people
are pirating it and
are playing it. there are empty servers? what, you don't say. do you fucking think people play games 24h a day in every fucking country?
and again, failed as in valve getting the old players to convert to a new game, which most of them won't do. obviously, as I
said before valve
will get new players
who didn't play cs before. counter strike was always about competitive gameplay and leagues. it's the reason it's still alive. back in the days when source and CZ came out (which is NOT an expansion pack, but a standalone game
based on 1.6) valve tried to push these games on players via official leagues only having either of these two, and not updating and fixing 1.6 any more, which ended up with players boycotting and raging. In the end 1.6 came back again.
so their plan to
make people forget 1.6 failed
and that's the last thing i have to say about this

i don't quite get how you can say something like that about a game that hasn't even been released yet. How do you know that valve wants to have it to replace counter-strike 1.6? how do you know that, if that is their intention, it's not gonna work? are you a beta tester or what. Like bp, i will mention starcraft here, when sc2 was released a shit ton of pro-gamers went from sc1 to sc2. Maybe the same thing will happen with the new cs game, you have no way of knowing how it's going to turn out so shut it. Of course you can speculate but that's not what you're doing, you're bluntly saying that "this is how it's gonna be".

1. same scenario as before
2. listen to the community
3. this isn't starcraft, it's a completely different breed of players
valve pretty much abandoned development on 1.6, the last update they had was years ago, and was adding ads to the game, so that they can still make some cash off it
also, you can barely find any people thinking positively about this game from the 1.6 community, the demand is: "don't make any more fucking ripoff games, fix the cheater problem you assholes"
1.6 had pretty major changes when it was released after 1.5 (which some people still play), and there was a big outrage, but most of the community went with the flow. now, when source and pals came, people expected it would be the same, they lose a few hundred players, but keep the rest, right? wrong, most people stayed with 1.6. why? because the gameplay mechanics were totally different, and no one would accept that. not to mention the goldsource engine is old as fuck, even the shittiest laptops can run it without failing.
The things that we know about this new cs is that it will be completely new, new weapons, new gameplay, new money system, def kit can't be bought it's given randomly, (basically it just keeps the title) which doesn't suit the taste of the 1.6 community. "Decoy grenade? what the fuck man, thats bullshit"
People won't change, from a game that they've been playing for years. Relearning, re-strategy, is a pain in the ass.
It's obvious valve wants it to be a replacement. As i said before, valve tried a shitton of stuff to kill of 1.6 when source came out, but to no avail.
"I need a new computer to play a game? Fuck you, I'm sticking to the old one"
"A few top players saying source is the way to go? Fuck that"
"No more updates to the game? Who cares, let's play, we just need more admins"
"No 1.6 on WCG and such? Fuck you valve, don't mess with me, there's a bunch of other lans i can go to"
pretty much what people said back than, and 1.6 is still the de facto of lan games
Source players seem interested, but that's something else. Obviously, we'll only know for sure, how things will be, when the time comes, but right now, this is how people are reacting.
Also a random fact, since you're mentioning beta testers: only source players became beta testers, again, 1.6 players were left out, because valve knows that they can't sell anything new to these guys, who are grabbing onto every inch of 1.6 they can. There were a few changes to 1.6 years ago, to make it more "fresh", that had to be pulled, because of a massive rage attack from the players.
you are right. that's how people react. That's how they react to a game that hasn't been released yet, a game that has close to no information aside from the name (what you said is not publicly stated by valve anywhere as far as i know). Trust me, valve knows what the fuck it's doing now. They didn't back with css, they have learned. Don't think that the greatest fps company is more stupid than a few kids online who play THEIR game. Valve consists of many gamers, so they know what gamers would want. It's just outright stupid to just assume pretty much everything you and the rest of the community is assuming. Especially with so little information revealed.

what i meant to say was that they've learned a LOT from tf2, portal and the likes. They've learned what their customers will like and what they won't like since the release of css. I'm not trying to say that they're unable to set something into the sand but I think that it's unlikely that they will.

thats probably because it's not graphics-intensive or that it's still community driven, based in tourneys and such, hell, even goldeneye 007 still has tourneys. CZ is an expansion pack in the same way vr missions was for mgs, opposing fronts was for company of heroes, and how counter-strike is for half life. not requiring the original game based on the engine or content it derives from doesnt mean its standalone game
Quote from: logenso their plan to make people forget 1.6 failed

valve is the same way blizzard is, i said, with broodwar/sc2
will i go back to 1.6? will i go back to broodwar? no, they're old as hell and make my eyeballs bleed. but whatever the reason people stick to their game is of their decision, not the companies.

SHUT THE FUCK UP COUNTER-STRIKE WAS GOOD WHEN THEY DIDN'T HAVE TEXTURES FOR THE FUCKING PLAYER MODELS IT'S BEEN BAD EVER SINCE THEY REPLACED THE GREEN/RED GUYS
I hate CSS.
It's basically Modern Warfare but all the animations look stiff and not fluid, and there's less guns.

Yeah this. I'm not a fan of cod, but both these games are pretty different
im calling both of them bad shooters where you die in one shot
no counter-strike is vastly superior simply because it's a straight-forward shooter without perks and special bullshit you can use to nuke fags
dying never struck me as a big deal but i usually stayed on the move anyway it's a lot harder to die when you aren't retarded unless you run into some random fag in which case it comes down to reaction time/size of your gun
itt kids argue about the worst series of online shooters of all time
cs and css are good games that have a dedicated community of players that have become really good that occasionally makes the game frustrating and unfun that's the only reason you're saying that
and this will develop into the typical 'generic military shooter' argument like always
and i dont think a w+m1 heavy is in a position to argue about 'good fps's'
i think we all know deep down inside halo is the king
still arguing about this huh? heh
i stopped playing CS though i mean i went to a LAN party when i was like 14 and curbstomped everyone and some 18-year old asshole flipped out and tried to beat me up WTF?? and the last time i fired it up i ended up on some dyke sex server which was like connected to a site called like uhhh ninja girl gamer or something and it was basically a webcam with two dykes playing CS and fingering eachother
