Title: i'm painting 40k figures
Post by: Sinitron on July 25, 2011 04:49 AM
IMPERIAL GUARDSMEN

i should proly have pictures before making the thread but i don't have a camera on hand atm

anyway i doubt you COMPUTER NERDS can grasp such a delicate and integral part of NERD HISTORY as TABLE-TOP WARGAMING truly is (i don't know how to play i just like the figures LOL)

EDIT: ok here are some awful pictures because the camera i borrowed sucked pig dick and the blitz was shitty

i got some chaos knights once

out of a box of 12 i only painted 6 because i spent like 2-3 days on each or w/e

now i'm trying to paint the guardsmen in batches because IG armies are fucking huge

i started out with 1 guardsman as a test, then 3 using the color scheme i want, and now 5 at once

i just drybrush fucking everything and then pick out a few details and it looks alright (though i'm not 'eavy metal material) it's better than some of the shit i saw on display in the stores i've been to BUT THEN AGAIN who would willingly part with their most exquisite works even for a short time

you need a minimum of 25 troops if you go with a single HQ squad and 2 veteran squads, for normal platoons and conscripts you need like 20-50 per platoon in addition to command structure

i'm aiming to make a functional army of sorts with 1 HQ squad, 1 storm trooper squad, 1 infantry platoon (minimum 25 models), 1 veteran squad represented with steel legionnaires and 2 sentinel squads (1 scout squad and 1 armored) then expand with some more stuff once that is done

in total that's about 50 infantry models and 6 sentinels for a still fairly bare boned army, i chose to skip tanks for now since i can practise painting vehicles with the sentinels without screwing up a far more expensive kit, i've finished one already though and it turned out satisfactory

storywise, big human empire with eternal god-emperor vegetable fighting on all fronts against aliens, traitors, and other religions, who also fight amongst themselves

on the tabletop, you just pick a cool army, spend 5000 dollars, and roll some dice to see if your cool army can kill the other guys' less cool armies (because they aren't yours so they have to be lame)

back home, it means dedicating a desk/room/floor to tons of junk like paints, glues, brushes, tools, spare kits, basing, sprays for undercoating, some bright lamps and hopefully a fan or something to ventilate your room (big open window is a huge advantage here) so your brain doesn't melt and come gushing out your nostrils

it's a bit like making shitty flash for newgrounds but more expensive and nobody else will see your atrocious artistic skills

all the figures are grey before you paint them (or silver if they're metal).

Quote from: ropesnakewhat do these look like before you paint them?

i rememeber some people used to play this table top game that was basically a giant hill and plains with mountains and a volcano. the game board was gigantic and took up like 2 full tables in this tiny store.

Quote from: cipherall the figures are grey before you paint them (or silver if they're metal).

yeah you buy them in pieces usually, clean them up and assemble them

the plastic ones come on big sprues and you have to carefully remove them with a clipper or a knife, then remove residue around the edges from the molding process, while the metal ones usually just have like these little knobs or whatever which you need to clip off

i also like working with 'green stuff', which is a sort of putty you can use to model additional details and shit, i have a whole ton of it and i want to practise using it so i can make something cool, some really good people can sculpt really cool stuff with it

i wont be able to paint more for a while because of work but im going to get more black undercoat, purity seal (preferably matte) and a few other minor things like new clippers

im trying to figure out how to base them, too, the easiest would be some kind of desert bullshit but idk

i also want to make a cool KOMBAT KOMMODORE to lead my GRAND ARMY and give him a better paint job (most of these guys so far have mostly been painted assembly line style)

i fucking hated glueing the metal ones I remember. Nothing held together and half the time they didn't even fit and needed to be filed down or something
Title: i'm painting 40k figures
Post by: Sinitron on July 31, 2011 06:10 AM
metal is a pain, generally you can get away with just super glue on the smaller miniatures but on larger models you had to drill holes in them and stick little wires and shit in to make it hold

I remember collecting Tyranids as opposed to everyone else because they looked cooler.
To be honest classic Warhammer with skeletons and the other stuff were probably more interesting.
I wish that had been more popular.
Title: i'm painting 40k figures
Post by: Sinitron on August 3, 2011 03:21 PM
tyranids are pretty cool too though i'm more of a tanks and walkers guy but tau are too sleek so IG it is

i also had some chaos warriors for WFB, but i never got around to making a full army or anything

they're nice though because chaos allows you to do a lot of conversions

chaos and those egyptian skeleton things are neat

wayland games has reasonable prices but i haven't received my shipment yet

here is update 4 u

i got my wayland sentinels and an aegis defence line kit, which will hopefully let me make some cool conversions when combined with my bitsbox

i also assembled a bunch of foot soldiers, figured out how i want to base my stuff and got some extra paints, as well as a commissar

i also intend to get a display case from ikea but they were all sold out when i was there today but will be getting more on tuesday/thursday so i need to check back in then

no dakka is about as many large and noisy guns as possible crammed together, these things are more defensive than offensive

i started working a little on no. 3 but haven't found a solution i'm happy with yet
Title: Re: i'm painting 40k figures
Post by: Sinitron on September 17, 2011 04:18 AM
i put further models on pause, spray-painted most of the ones i have finished atm and im gonna paint those first

btw resin is a shitty material

the old metal figs were kinda hard to put together and removing mold lines required some effort, but resin has a much higher chance of miscasting and bubbles showing up and shit

which means not only do you have to clean up the model, but you also have to remodel the parts that are ruined in the casting process

plain old plastic has less fine details but usually doesn't suffer as much from miscasts and other bullshit
Title: Re: i'm painting 40k figures
Post by: Sinitron on September 24, 2011 04:10 PM
so i painted some of my troops and shit etc but then i realized the old metal lascannon sucked nuts so i used one of the spare sentinel ones to make another

its a little sloppy but w/e its UNIQUE

They look very cool. The scenery and natural light did add a few interesting elements to them, but it took a bit away some of the details that couldn't be shown. Never had much experience with putting models together then painting them, but it looks like you spent some time doing it.

yeah i've been doing this on/off for years

it goes in cycles

i should find my old warboss, strip off the paint and remake him

yes then all i need is someone to pit it against but apparently the only active 40k things in norway are in like trondheim and oslo so they're both pretty much out of reach unless i move there (fuck oslo it SUX trondheim has a nice church at least)

the thing keeping me from playing 40k is the fact that the closest store selling these figures is an hour away

You can order online and have them delivered to your house.

I have Yarrick and a Lord Commissar, but I haven't painted them yet. I'm not too fond of them though, they're not really good for generic commissar models. I'll get some proper ones when I have more infantry.
