Sure, it was probably ported over, but so was Doom 3 as they both run on the same engine, and guess what? The ports were vastly inferior because the xbox had shitty hardware. Pure-bred console shooters are notoriously awful, and shooters ported to consoles are even worse. Quake 4 on Steam is neither, and they also fixed some of the compatability issues the original release has with Windows 7 and Vista. Can you get the PC version for 2.50$? Probably. Does it matter? No.

I bought Zekey the game so he can enjoy it and get the TF2 launcher without having to worry about making an investment he might regret, because I personally find the atmosphere in many parts of the game to be great.

no, it's not the same game, if you play a glitchy ported mess with inferior graphics, sluggish controls and lousy optimization on THE WORST CONSOLE POSSIBLE it's going to suck shit no matter what you do

computers are better at absolutely everything and quake 4 is a good game for a multitude of reasons which can be summed up with atmosphere, intensity, design and just being plain badass, the only thing that comes to mind which is bad would be some of the sound effects, especially the grunting during the stroggification sequence - but all of these things are worsened by playing it on a console which was outdated even when Q4 first came out it was first released

I've been playing it over the last couple of days.

I have to agree with sinister it's pretty good.

Best game I've ever played? nope. But very solid and fun and challenging.

At first I thought the graphics were really bad. But apparently I had "ambient light" turned on which in laments terms means "turn off the games whole lighting system so even the darkest caves are bright as fuck"

Then I turned that off and it looks pretty darn good considering its age.

Really the only thing I don't like about it is the way pathways through maps are laid out in the campaign.
Like I'll be in a room with 1 door and it'll tell me to go somewhere and I'm like "how?" and it turns out theres a secret hole in the floor or summat.

Its also nice to play a shooter with accurate shotguns again. Other than this and STALKER I can't think of many games where shotguns dont spit shot in a huge cone of innacurate fire. Which isn't how shotties work irl anyway.

I'm not sure where I am in the game right now I'm in a big ol mech suit and just shot one of those big red spider robots to death. I didn't know my missiles recharged once they are out so I spent half an hour shooting it with my puny machine guns like an imbecile.

i just played a game were i killed like 20 asshole spies as soldier because i kept jumping and flipping around and they couldn't fucking stab me

Most of the spies I come across dont even get behind me before uncloaking/leaving their disguise

half of them stab at the front also, so I always call out terrible spies, so they can feel the shame and humiliation of being bad at the class where being bad is noticable

you can spot a bad pyro easily, you just have to look for the backburner

a principle to good spying is that you shouldn't use your cloak to begin with unless it's an emergency/SCURRY AWAY scenario

And yeah backburner is pretty much a straight upgrade like the degreaser. There's nothin the stalk flamethrower excels at. Hell even just plain ol fire damage the bb does a bit more.

there's too many items in the game now to be able to balance it. your loadout and/or class simply has to change to fit the situation in most cases. sometimes i wish the game had presets of loadouts you typically used so you could quickly transition, instead of having to change the items you equip every time.

i mean it never even had the ability to airblast before and had bonus damage and crits from behind so ofc every scrub pyro had it. now that it has airblast though i think it's less of a strictly 'f2p' weapon and more 'everyone uses this'. the original flamethrower isn't really even worth using anymore.

Originally yeah the backburner gave the pyro more health.
It also had no falloff so it usually did maximum damage no matter if you were just being lightly tickled by the flame or not.


It's had airblast since the hatless update.

Thats when they shoved a bunch of changes from the beta into the game, including the nerf to the Powerjack which I still can't find a logical explanation for.

the closest i ever got to figuring this out was when one of the developers posted saying "we have reasons for this" (this was also talking about the gunslinger crit change a few others that were up for a like.. a day) but never actually said what those reasons were
