saw it last night. I thought it was a lot of fun!  its got a lot more fight scenes than the original and it is les talky, but it still feels like a kung fu movie and its true to the original.
It kinda knows it cant beat  kung fu panda 1, so it goes in a different direction...this is more like a "beat all the baddies" action movie. The design and animations of the characters all look great and i think this movie has some of the most impressive backgroung/stage work that ive seen in a dreamworks movie. That being said the plot does feel a bit forced and predictable.
I also didnt like the use of words like "hardcore" and "awesome" and it feels a bit out of place during dialogue.
never the less. fun stuff.

As a side note, one of the things that i found to be a very nice suprise is that there are many 2D animated scenes during the movie during the intro, flashbacks, and dream sequences, but these sequences merge really well with the 3d stuff. I think the audience reacted positively to this: those sequences remind them of how much they actually liked 2d. so its nice to see a movie that tries to encourage it.  but maybe thats just how it felt for me.

8/10

Its weird to me but 2D has a charm that cant be replaced and I cant figure out if its just old generation non sense from what we grew up on or if there is legitamately something about it

i never saw the first but i did see this one tonight and i liked it . everything seemed to move really fast, but the movie was beautiful, the animation was awesome and the story was great, and the very ending part was pretty cool. the 2d sequences were very well done as well. but i do think it's strange how po is really a horrible fighter who is so out of shape, tigress can beat the shit out of him - but in the end
he learns this killer 'inner peace' move that saves everyone
. also i liked the villain, very unique to make him a peacock of all things. the animal heirarchy in the movie was curious.

Seriously is this worth seeing?? Because the first movie made me mad that the final battle was Jack Black yelling "SKADOOSH" with his pinky. I didn't read the spoiler stuff you guys posted because I don't want to know what happens but can you tell me if they actually took it somewhere this time or is it a retread of the first one?? Lately I'm really skeptical of sequels and even MORE so when it's a DreamWorks sequel.

Honestly my least favorite thing about the first one was Jack Black. I don't feel like I enjoyed myself as much as the rest of you all.

Kung Fu Panda 2 was pretty cool~ I prefer the first, since I feel like I got overhyped* for the sequel and it had odd pacing because of the exposition/plot (lots of looking back instead of moving forward the whole time, like the first one), but I still enjoyed it~

I feel like this movie tried really hard to measure up to the first. Lord Shen made the movie "darker and edgier" because of his flippin' mental instability. If you didn't think he was crazy because of how he talks (giving it thought, he's ridiculously murderous and persistent in laying waste to everything), you can see how off the rocker he is with his freaky stare in every scene he's in. The disappointing side to his instability though, is the name "Oedipus" repeating in my mind whenever I think about his "fighting the prophecy" motivation--It really simplifies things. I still like Lord Shen, it's really cool to watch a peacock actually partake in kung fu on occasion, but he's clearly not a Tai Lung.

Ehh, not a spoiler to stuff in the movie, since you can actually find this information on the official KFP2 website and stuff, but blacked out if you don't want this extra info rattling in your head/"overhyping"/"if it ain't in the movie, it doesn't count":
*
From what I read up on Lord Shen, his parents were embarrassed of his albino, "white = death" (to the Chinese and most Asian cultures) plumage and sent him off to stay with the Seer. Before he got exiled, he was the only one who befriended the wolves when they guarded Gongmen Palace, so they're in his debt. Knowing all these things made the "cute" moments with him a bit more interesting, since he probably would've been a "nice" guy if he didn't lose his marbles. The "look how far you've fallen" reactions from his parents, the Seer, and Wolf Boss respectively gain a bit more dimension in the film, knowing these things.
Now THIS was what I was looking forward to. Admittedly, it probably would've been too much if they put it in the film, but I swear it's possible... I mean, instead of just saying "Lord Shen saw an evil use to gunpowder" + "He was enraged by the prophecy", they could've mentioned
him being a good prince and cheated from the throne because of his sickliness (both physical and mental), adding to his beef towards kung fu
.

=/ But that's just me being ridiculous.

one thing i didn't get about shen either was that
he was an excellent kung fu fighter, but didn't care about the "death of kung fu", if this is true, why did he practice it all the time?
After rewatching Secrets of the Furious Five and the holiday special that aired on TV, it really makes me wonder how they're gonna approach the TV series. The Furious Five thing showed how the whole TV series could possibly be done in 2D, then the holiday special just looks as pretty as the movies, down to the 2D animated intro.

What I do not want is that Madagascar Penguins thing, even though apparently it's "doing well".

i take this back (sorry for bumping an old thread but i only just saw this film)

the 3D worked wonders here and they're really starting to show the advantages and potential of it now - hell, this time i actually preferred the 3D sequences to the 2D sequences. the atmosphere in some of the scenes was just fucking dead on - especially the part after Po gets blasted by Shen's cannon and ends up in the rainy forest area. Also a funny thing I noticed, the colours in this are a lot more vibrant than KFP 1 - and you even get an in-film comparison when that flashback shit happens.

shen was an entertaining and inventive badguy, seth rogan's mantis character was very funny, and the designs despite the dreaded '3D american CG eyes' are pretty much perfect cartoon animals (except tigress, her look doesn't really sit right with me for some reason). it also seemed a little darker and more like a kung-fu movie than the first, probably due to del toro's dabblings in it

obviously it isnt without its downsides - the red panda guy who dustin hoffman plays was reduced from a funny grouch to Master Splinter and i wish they were more subtle with the inner peace shit and not have po pull a move out of his ass that he just learnt after an epiphany (guess which film also did this? that's right, the first one)

i never thought i'd say this but it's probably the most entertaining film of this year for me
