Title: The Telescope
Post by: Gerkinman on May 16, 2011 09:37 AM
Yo dawg! Its over here! (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/570002)

After 2 years of stopping and starting, restarting the project, cancelling it, bringing it back, not touching it for months at a time and then finally crunching the last couple of weeks when I could have been playing SC2, I humbly present The Telescope.

Its not what I had in my head originally 2 years ago, but I guess thats what happens when you drag out such a small project over such a long time.

Taking a break from Flash for a while, going to try to make my next short in Toon Boom for something different.

Anyway, feel free to throw me some abuse.

the kid with the telescope , i didnt really understand why he so quickly went along with whatever the blue kid wanted to do in the end after tossing the telescope he found and making him cry. but ill take the cartoon for what it is, im not gonna try to read into it, it seemed more like a visual feast if anything.

I find too many cartoons have kids as whiney little bitches. Not a fan. I know when I was a kid I had a pretty short attention span and moved on to the next thing pretty quick.

Are "nice" visuals all it takes to get a 3/5 from you guys now? You ladies are getting soft

Has become quite apparent I need to work more on telling a story without dialogue as a few people seem to have no idea what was going on. Then again a lot seemed to pick it up with no explanation. Why is there no middle ground D=

exactly what i was going to say. also i kinda wish your animation had a bit more bounce to it and a few shots went by a bit fast as well

other than that it was pretty cool and interesting to watch

Yeah, I think my next film will probably go more towards using bouncing tweens for pose transitions rather then distorted pieces of vector god knows whats.

Chiptunes are a love or hate thing I suppose. Especially when it comes to tracks that aren't supposed to sound like dance tracks.

chiptunes are great, but i have to agree with lenko, this specific piece was rather irritating

Oh hey you finished it!  Congrats man! At first I thought the music was very grating and annoying but as it continued on I grew accustomed to it so that was okay; and I saw how you had spaced the scenes to go with the music a bit which was a nice effect and helped the cartoon work together with it over time. There were a few parts where there was way too much pattern and like colors that I couldn't see the picture clearly though...it happened at the beginning like when the mom flicked a cigarette and yelled at the kid and then the people and city when viewed in the telescope scenes. Animation wise there were some short cuts I caught in the movement and poses to poses but they didn't really distract me enough to notice them as I was mostly watching the cartoon as the story went on (it was more like something I saw as when I put on my "animator vision" and started looking at it visually and technically on the 2nd or 3rd watching haha). But I did like the story a lot. The way I read it this friendless kid who lives with an abusive mom finds a simple telescope and keeps his innocent nature and imagination alive but envisioning a bunch of amazing things through the telescope. Its only when the blue kids doesn't see it, does he realize he's been only imagining things. Then the kid in the process finds a friend and goes off to play with him...if anything added I would have liked it if the telescope had been more responsible for bringing them together like as if the object was not just thrown away but a vessel for them both to interact and see things differently. Like if the blue kid actually saw different crazy things and the boy realizes they both were seeing things creatively in their own ways, and thus became friends because of the telescope. But anyways yeah I liked it and it definitely shows the hard work and patience you put into each bit...the coloring and shaded gradient in all the parts must have been very time-consuming. Also heh I like that disgusting mom when she stuck her hand into her crotch and sniffed it lmao, overall a good short.

really cool

glad you finished it

i liked the visuals but i feel it needed more story depth to it instead of one kind finding a cool telescope and the other kid being a douchebag

The main reason I didn't have the blue kid see something different to the first kid is that as a character he was created by a friend of mine, albeit the character has always been an adult. I guess it was set up as a buddy comedy where the first kid, or Merve as we call him is a rather loose character with some drug issues, the second kid, or Allen is a really down to earth serious type fellow. This cartoon was really like an origin story I suppose. Im currently working on the writing for some things that bring them back to the adults that my friend originally intended, its all intertwined with Gerkinman too who im working on bring back. So I can see why as a film on its own your concept would work better, but  Im hoping, when this is worked in with the other things Im working on to make a whole that it sort of sits better.

I have been doing that since 2008, I dont particularly think I have improved.

Quotereally cool

Your summary sounds so much more realistic then an elaborate story tho.
