I'm not a real expert in this field but to me, hip-hop is a constant balance of amazing sampling along with a lyrical message that isn't too twisted to follow that people can relate to.
Everything else that wasn't up to par with it was called rap

Rap for me is an instrumental with simple common messages of money, power, respect, swag and dougie spammed throughout the track for hype and the like
However, this is the opposite in terms of it sounding like a mix between reading a poem and simple conversation/thoughts and the music being more just hanging in the background to mildly accompany the words just enough to get the job done.

i agree shad, it isnt made to be commercial or universally liked. hes not trying to be radio friendly, hes making the music that he wants.
however i disagree about the beats not holding much significance, i think they contribute a lot to the mood of the album, and if he was rapping over the same kinds of beats that rappers like drake or kid cudi rap over, it would completely alter the tone and mood of the album.
even though it is not going to be a common opinion, i think it is better than bastard as an album. it is darker, a bit more challenging and it has some weak parts, but it flows together and says exactly what it wants to say and achieves what it wants to achieve.

Thank you for the album nonzop. It was quite good. I listened to it last night before going to bed. It's basically Bastard with higher production values, a darker mood and a different story, which is what I would expect. My favorite tracks are She, Window and AU79. well tyler does not make accessible music, and odd future arent all that mainstream at all really. we forget this because on the internet they have a big fanbase, but most of the world doesnt know about them, and most are pretty put off by odd future in general. based on beats alone, they dont make poppy or accessible music mostly (aside from frank oceans shit and radical which both use beats from popular songs and maybe left brains production on blackenedwhite). the beats are lo-fi, very distorted and synth-heavy, and full of layers of sound, while still being relatively simple. theyre not poppy beats with heavy basic 4/4 beat drums and a clap every now and then.

i agree on this, even artists like shit cudi or drake have some (over the top produced) pop song in their album but because of what they SAY in the track, it doesn't get much recignition. if they talk about life situations in a poppy beat, that shit wont really sell nowadays but if they talk about love in that same beat that'll be huge sucess cuz

the reason odd future have been blowing up in the past few months is yonkers. the yonkers video has upwards of 10 million views at this point and from what i have observed, the main reason isnt because of the music. people dont even give a shit about the music, really. its not like most people watch it and go "oh shit notice how every line contradicts itself in someway. this beat is so barebones and simple and the piano in the middle works so well. this video is super well done and the lighting is great and tyler seems really interesting. this is dope" its just mostly just "oh shit this is fuckin weird. is he eating a bug?? lol what the fuck this dude has problems. this is so weird. why does he say fuck a lot?... hey wtf bruno mars is good. wow this dude is scary lol!!!" people just are interested in them and show it off because its so "weird" and so they can have conversations on whether or not the earl video is real (ive heard this happen for real lmao)
