Title: My Bloody Adventures
Post by: BloodyCheery on September 26, 2010 07:31 AM
Hey guys! So I just got back from a 5-6 month deployment around the pacific on this fat white bitch right here
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmedia.defenseindustrydaily.com%2Fimages%2FSHIP_USNS_Mercy_lg.jpg&hash=dc8f13988b7be3765128bfc962df16d3b56e8d85)
and I tell ya...it was a pretty amazing experience (aside from my shitty food service job). We traveled to Guam, Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Australia, and Vietnam to help others in need whether it be medical treatment or community service (construction, visits to orphanages, etc.). It was very interesting to see how people in different cultures lived with little to no technology and other advanced resources. I didn't get to do any medical work thanks to being assigned to the worst fucking food service job, but we had the priviledge to go out on "liberty" and explore the areas. I've tasted crocodile burgers, played with orphans, nearly got mugged and stabbed by a bunch of children who wanted me to buy a bunch of worthless shit at ridiculous prices, fed monkeys, and much much more! I've taken hundred of pictures and video footage, but so far I am only posting them on my Facebook account. Once I find a decent photosharing site besides AssBucket, I'll post the link here. You are free to ask me anything about my adventures and I'll answer the best I can!

P.S. Shipboard life sucks so much. It ain't a cruise.

Both were liberty ports, so everyone got to go out the entire time we were there. Well, except food service. soidfjoinfa

SINGAPORE: Pretty much a lot of sight-seeing and shopping. Didn't get to hit the heart of the city, but me and my group went to china town the first day. Very neat food markets with unusually large food (holy fuck gigantic squash). Laws are pretty strict in Singapore and from what I've heard if you break any laws you get beaten by canes. Lucky for the Mercy crew none of that ever happened. VERY expensive to do any amount of shopping in Singapore. On my last night I went with a bigger group to go to a club...of course, after much bitching from everyone 'cause different portions of the group wanted to do something else. The clubs we went to were a bit, well, I dunno if this is the right term, "shady."  The building we went to with all the clubs had several convincing transvestites. One of my [male] friends ended up making out with one and didn't realize the chick was actually a man until the night was over HAHAHA. A few guys in my group ended up sneaking off to get special massages and we nearly made it back late to the ship (idiots really wanted to get their jollies off). Not my best of nights, especially since it was the first time I've ever been to a club.

AUSTRALIA: More sight-seeing and shopping. Our port was in Darwin, north of Australia. Not a whole lot of wildlife save for a few birds and crocodiles. Not as expensive as Singapore. Got to go to a Croc exhibit where I witnessed a croc feeding (adults and babies) and held a baby croc. Ate croc burgers a lil' while after. Australian women are GORGEOUS. No lie. Don't have any pictures to prove my statement, but nevertheless the women are absolutely stunning. Take my word for it. There were incidents every single day thanks to total shitheads thinking that it'd be cool to beat up an aussie...then end up with a busted nose and a few broken teeth. Watched Inception during our visit and I found it mindblowing. Sad that I didn't get to see any of my relatives, but it all worked out once I finally got to buy a year supply of vegemite and Crunchie bars (yum!). Probably the best port we've been to.

6 months on a ship must be a pretty different experience
I hope at least you had lots of fun traveling the planet to counter being bored at the service thing
but yeah you make this sound so fun!

that is a big ass ship

so what was the point of the mission? humanitarian aid? is this a navy ship?
Title: My Bloody Adventures
Post by: BloodyCheery on September 27, 2010 02:21 AM
@rtil: It was a humanitarian mission. You can read more about our adventures http://pacificpartnership.wordpress.com/ (http://pacificpartnership.wordpress.com/) The ship is actually not a naval ship. It belongs to civilians.

@aether: Yes, I'm designated in the Navy as a hospital corpsman. For this deployment, however, they assigned me into food service...FUCKING GAY 9WE8HR89QHG But at least I have some new respect for cooks, seeing as what sort of shit they have to go through. The crew was really rude to us when they couldn't get as much food as they wanted! It was unbelievable!

@metroid62: I am a she, not a he, despite what my pictures look like.

This deployment was more of a humanitarian mission than battle missions we would do in Iraq/Afghanistan. We had tons more luxuries and the comfort of not having to carry a gun wherever we went. We still had to be very cautious, especially during our visit in Indonesia. I guess you could say we had more fun than those in a real deployment would. I don't know.

what kind of civilians own a ship that large? it looks like an industrial ship. and it's still a navy operation, right?

I'm not sure who exactly owns the ship. I just know it's owned by some higher-ups at the hospital down in San Diego. The USNS Mercy actually used to be an oil tanker before it became a hospital ship. Every two years it goes out on humanitarian missions run by naval operations.

Wowzer those are some awesome pictures, its a shame you'll only show em for one day cause there are some really good ones there, especially the sunset and ship pictures.

HAHAHAHA That's so beautiful!

One of our bosses, a senior chief, always looked like he was pissed off. He would make a pouty face. It's very easy to imitate. One of my friends does it perfectly.
