Title: Modded my Wiimote.
Post by: W.A.C. on September 25, 2010 04:28 AM
I absolutely hate playing with the Wiimote sideways. I find it extremely uncomfortable because of the lack of grip, the tiny d-pad, and I dislike the NES styled 1 and 2 buttons. My solution? Turn this:

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg687.imageshack.us%2Fimg687%2F760%2Fwiimotenonconceptpng.png&hash=2e9dc82e28b9f46431fc69f71470dd9e4e449e83)

Into this:

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg820.imageshack.us%2Fimg820%2F9213%2Fwiimoteconceptpng.png&hash=2fa0cfe3ed9d9dd2e25841ca826248fe8112b506)

The d-pad and bigger buttons are from the classic controller (http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/3218/wiiclassiccontroller.jpg). Today, I spent over six hours working on the d-pad.

Before:

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg29.imageshack.us%2Fimg29%2F1289%2Fbeforefy.png&hash=d2fc5568d3b163c561d0e58aefdadc3ce495c180)

After:

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg3.imageshack.us%2Fimg3%2F6848%2Fprogress4i.png&hash=189614a9f1cec42c98b560d15d197ac68e99e561)

Does it work? Absolutely perfectly. You can see I accidentally made some fuck ups on the front and the fact I totally ruined one of the things that connects the Wiimote has me really ticked off at myself but in the end, it was totally worth it. As for the buttons, I'll make it a project for another day. Since I spent so long installing a fucking d-pad, the last thing I want to do is spend another omfg amount of time working on buttons today. I'll probably attempt it next weekend. I have a major test on Monday so Saturday and Sunday are study days. >_> Here's what the insides look like.

This took a lot of work. ;_; Here's a couple of pictures my dad took of me working on it.

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg543.imageshack.us%2Fimg543%2F8936%2Fprogress1.png&hash=2809110cabe4dc4164352033cbf28d8eee84f882)

I'm low on clean clothes and in public, I never wear the clothes shown in those pictures. <_<

Wario Land: Shake It!, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Metroid: Other M, Kirby's Epic Yarn, and Donkey Kong Country Returns do not support the classic controller. If they did, I would have never taken on this project.

Thanks. Cutting the holes for the buttons should be much easier than cutting that cross for the d-pad, but modifying the inside of the controller will be a lot harder for the buttons than it was for the d-pad. >_< Getting that d-pad enlarged is definitely the hardest aspect of this project though.

the cutting work is really shoddy but i guess it works. it'll be interesting to see if you can pull off modding the buttons

The cutting work took forever. The front would look really nice if it weren't for a few errors. <_< Some other person (http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=135186) has attempted to mod the d-pad before I tried it but I have no idea if anyone else has tried replacing the 1 and 2 buttons with classic controller buttons. It actually looks like an easier task than adding the d-pad.

Before:

Although I made the circle too big for the Y button by accident, it still works great and I'll post a video once I get a hold of new batteries for my camera. >_> Here's an updates on my Wiimote's insides.

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg190.imageshack.us%2Fimg190%2F3533%2Finsides.png&hash=451c65a916fad2033826908d5d271a8b971106a4)

Unfortunately, I accidentally forgot to turn over the top of the Wiimote. :/ Here's some photos of me making the holes for the Wiimote.

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg266.imageshack.us%2Fimg266%2F6498%2Fprogress1a.png&hash=cfafe20e25f528a029ee22f23f87fc9bd93ac88c)

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg641.imageshack.us%2Fimg641%2F7200%2Fprogress2r.png&hash=39e05c13b09a191eced81824473d267fb87a1587)

This all required a lot of effort but it was totally worth it. On a downside, I accidentally cut one of my fingers but it's a small cut so it's no big deal.

But it functions great. Like I said, I'll post a video when I get batteries for my camera.

you probably could have buffed out the edges of the cuts. maybe you should do that next time you open it to put in the xy buttons

If I tried to make the d-pad cutout nicer looking in its current state, there would be be too much space for the d-pad and cause it to function much worse. I may mod a Wiimote again someday for a friend so if I do, hopefully I'll greatly improve with the d-pad. >_>

lmfao god i love that filter

anyways, the cut out work was done pretty horribly. I didn't read the topic cause i frankly don't care but it looks like it was your first time

ps. don't go around posting pictures of yourself and your short shorts on the internet, only daxflame may do that.

why on earth would the label on a pair of buttons bother you

It wasn't the names of the 1 and 2 buttons that bugged me, it was the size and NES styled position of the buttons.

Sounds like the internet isn't worth using at your place. Maybe you should stop using it.

Where I live, I only have two horrible options: AT&T and Charter Communications. AT&T's internet is extremely slow with 1.3 mbps as a download rate being my highest possible option. With Charter, their internet is extremely expensive and horribly unstable but fast. However, it's so unstable that when I had them as my provider, I couldn't use WLM because opening that program would cause my internet to crash. Not only that, but they gave the worst customer service ever that's run by fucking cocksuckers.

Thanks eman. If I had lots of money, I would consider modding my PS3 controller so it had better triggers. <_< That, and I would attempt modding a Wiimote a second time to have an improved edition over my first attempt.
