Gone with the Pope

Anyone ever heard of this? It was shot in 1975 but remained unfinished after the directors death. The film reels sat in the director's son's garage until Bob Murawski offered to take a shot at piecing the movie together. Murawski took charge of the restoration and spent 15 years putting it together between editing Sam Raimi's Spiderman films, Drag Me To Hell and The Hurt Locker. Right now it has a limited release in some places, but the site says it should be coming to Seattle and New York City

From the trailer it looks like the film is about an italian mafia who kidnaps the pope and asks for a dollar from every catholic.

"The audience response to the movie at the Hollywood premiere surpassed my wildest expectations," Murawski said. "The turnout was incredible, with the Egyptian Theatre filled to almost capacity. And the crowd was with the movie the entire time - laughing, gasping and cheering at all the appropriate places. The film ended to a thunderous applause that lasted a full minute.

I just came back from watching it. If you are a fan of grind house esque films you might love this. Some great parts and some sort of strangely touching parts. The ending is really bizarre. Like, almost scary bizarre. For a film that had no budget, it was pretty great to see how it turned out.
